  • Laptops throttle all the time, but you don't want a laptop that is severely throttling and struggling to maintain base clocks on the GPU. Here's my guide on how to know if your laptop GPU is throttling and some tips on how to fix it.
    Download MSI Afterburner: www.guru3d.com...
Check your GPU base clock and compare to see if your GPU is performing up to basic limits.
If you're laptop is temperature throttling:
    1) Clean your laptop of dust/debris. Use air blowing to blow out dust. Potentially take bottom cover off and clean fans.
    2) Repaste GPU/CPU with new paste or Liquid Metal to reduce temps.
    3) Get a laptop fan cooler and place your laptop on that.
    4) Undervolt your GPU (Advanced). Link here: • Video
If you're laptop is power throttling (like Asus GL504):
    1) Make sure you're plugged into AC power.
    2) Check your windows power profile and make sure you are at least on Balanced or Maximum performance.
    3) Clean wipe your Nvidia drivers and reinstall latest drivers.
    4) Set your GPU to maximum performance in Nvidia Control panel. Click Manage 3D settings, scroll down to "Power Management Mode", Set to "Prefer Maximum Performance"
If these things don't fix your issues, then you'll probably need to warranty your laptop or buy a different one because something is likely wrong with your laptop.

The best advice is don't expect too much from your laptop otherwise it will make it worse than previous.
Compromise it from your side by
    Lowering your game resolution
    Adding more RAM
    SSD
    Cleaning
    Unblocking the heat vents
Buy a PC when you have enough cash. Keep your laptop safe for longer periods.

A friend of mine had a ridiculously overheated laptop which was the predator helios 300 running on an i7, i helped him out by replacing his thermal paste and did some basic cleanup by unclogging the dust buildup from the fan. ever since then everything went to norm and fps was back to 97fps on gaming from 28fps. temperature on that laptop was pretty bad as it was going on 98*C and now it is running at 64*C while gaming. on idle not in game lowest temp was going at 68*C and now its running at 45*C.
i hope this helps. sometimes the basic cleanup works.

Just remember that thermal throttling happens for a reason. It happens to extend the overall lifespan of your machine. I guess if you don't mind replacing your laptop every year, might go ahead and crank it up. For those of us who cannot afford to blow thousands of dollars on a laptop on a yearly basis, thermal throttling is actually a feature not a bug.

Agree but my cell g7 throttles to 20 fps in csgo and is considered a "gaming laptop". When it came out of the box performance was horrible and I genuinely regretted buying it. Now iv change tons of settings to actually use the PC for gaming but it's ridiculous for a 1200 to 1400 pc to run games like league legends at 200 fps and then mid game to drop at below 30 which is unplayable

Limit the fps to your display, 200 fps is useless if your display has 120hz or similar. Doing this makes your gpu and cpu stop doing a lot of extra work which will lower temperatures. It's pretty easy to do and should honestly already come capped by default by the manufacturers.

You need an app to tweak the voltage supplied to your core and graphics card... it helps you adjust the volt suplied to the minimum without the core crashing meaning you get the performance you want at the minimum functioning voltage because the less volt you supply to your core and graphics card the less temp you produce, usually atleast 10 percent even with millivolts of undervolting....

    • @immadeofmagic
      @immadeofmagic 5 лет назад +1

You can achieve more performance with higher voltages, the tradeoff is higher temps which can then cause the cpu to thermal throttle. Because of this laptop cpu's tend to be locked to intake no more power than the manufacturer sets, to avoid any damage to the hardware

i dont even know what Throttling is

    • @nubfaceforthelose
      @nubfaceforthelose 4 года назад +108

Thermal Throttling is where the temperatures on the CPU or GPU get extremely high and will lower their clock speeds to compensate for it, thus hurting performance with massive framerate drops/stuttering (and possibly hurting your chip). This is called hitting your T-junction or tjmax. You can download a free piece of software called coretemp which will display your CPU temperatures across all cores and your tjmax. If you would like to see your GPU temps, MSI afterburner or EVGA precision x will do the trick. Those tools can also be used for overclocking and underclocking unlocked chips. I've been building and repairing laptops and PC's for about 15 years and different chips have different temperature limits. when they hit that temp, they will throttle and if they get far too high the system will simply turn off for safety reasons.
      Solutions:
      1) If you know what you're doing, reapply the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. I recently had an Aorus 15 x9 laptop brought to me, its a high end gaming laptop with an i7 8750h CPU and an RTX 2070. The CPU was hitting mid 90's during load/gaming, I've never seen degradation on a CPU due to heat but in theory it's possible. It had awful shoddy "chalky" stock thermal paste applied by the manufacturer. Not uncommon and unacceptable really. Gaming laptop manufacturers cutting corners which I see far too often. Replaced thermal paste with Arctic Silver. Non conductive kryonaut or mx4 is even better though (by about 3-6c). I just used Arctic silver because we had some at hand in our shop. Now the CPU hits mid 70's. Done. You want a "pea sized dot" on both the CPU and GPU. Too much or too little paste is not recommended and won't lower your temps as much as you want or will result in uneven temps across the cores. If you really want even lower temps you can use kryonaut liquid metal but you have to be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when applying this. It has to be a very very small dot because it's electrically conductive. If it gets spread over any transistors it could short your CPU or GPU and then you'll be stuffed. Especially in a laptop, you'll have to buy a whole new one. Also DO NOT use liquid metal on AMD CPUs as it will eat away the chip because of the silicon AMD use on their processors. Liquid metal I personally would not recommend at all in any circumstance. Hot temperatures would even be preferable. Just not worth the risk.
      2) If it's a desktop and you have the stock cooler, invest in an aftermarket one. Some people, especially really high end machines or enthusiasts install watercooling loops for really low temps and overclocking abilities. There is some work to be put in but It gives a pc that sexy appeal as watercooled PCs look lovely.
      3) If you're on a laptop, buy a cooling pad for underneath. They are only like 30 bucks on amazon.
      4) undervolt your chip using throttlestop. I have a good easy to follow link for that if you need it.
      5) use compressed air to blow out the dust (DO NOT USE A CLOTH).
      6) Try to lower the ambient temperatures in your room with air conditioning or simply opening a window. Even pointing a desk fan towards your system can have an effect. It may seem obvious but in summer your ambient temps will be higher and the higher your ambient temps, the temps of your components go up with it. Watercooled systems are even no exception to this rule. Us gamers love winter! :)
Regards, and don't let your temps bother you that much unless they get over 95c on Intel Cpus. Maybe a little lower with AMD as they don't like the heat as much as Intel. The extra heat is always to be expected with gaming laptops in particular as fitting such high end components in such a small and thin form factor, the air cannot flow as good as desktops. Also 9 times out of 10 the coolers in laptops are doing double duty (cooling both the CPU and GPU under the same cooler). So to sum up basically just enjoy your system and don't stress about the temps unless they are really worryingly high and you're regularly throttling. If they are not super high your system should live a long and healthy life.
Hope this helps some of you!
      Adam

Here are the specs of my laptop: www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/25611431
I have MSI afterburner installed and ever since undervolting the laptop, I get 65-75 Celsius on GPU while under load. While idle I get 60 Celsius.
There have been some developments I should mention:
      1. My GPU's core clock speed is 1518-1582 MHz according to Notebookcheck. Using MSI afterburners extremely handy statistics, I hardly ever go over 1000 MHz, and the speed fluctuates from 150-600 MHz most of the time.
      www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-MX250-Graphics-Card.382341.0.html
      2. Some people have reported frame drops due to high latency on Reddit and other forums. I do have packet loos when playing overwatch(btw if u have the time, you should give the game a try) at 100-200 ms. Perhaps this is the issue, but frame drops also occur on GTA and any other game I play.
      3. I reversed the undervolting changes using Techpowerup. There was 0 change in temperature, usage, and performance. Perhaps I didn't undervolt properly.
The game runs smoothly until I am 5 minutes in and then the frame drops start. Surprisingly, the temperature drops as time goes on. Perhaps this indicates that overheating isn't the issue?
      Averages:
      GPU Temp: 68-75 Celsius

I was wondering why I was getting massive FPS drops. Like I'll be getting 80-90-100+ fps, then it drops down to below 20 for a few seconds, then shoots back up again... My temp is 83-87, cpu is 4.0ghz (i7-7820HK) and gpu (GTX 1070) is between the base/boost. I have no idea wtf is going on.

Hey @master Yoda, i was having some fps stutter problems in some games, like ESO and Borderlands 3. I've spent months trying everything and the only thing that helped was undervolting my cpu. I tried it with 2 different softwares: Intel XTU and ThrottleStop, with the first i got rid of stutter by undervolting, but kept having high temperatures (95°C with fan on max speed), then changed to ThrottleStop, which is harder to use, but maintained the fps constant and got me a 15°C drop in the cpu.

According to a 2010 study conducted by Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, the dryness experienced at a high elevation as well as low pressure reduces the sensitivity of a person's taste buds to sweet and salty foods by about 30 percent. Add that dry cabin air affects our ability to smell, and our ability to taste is reduced further.

    Aorus 17G YD 3060 Here.
Actually purchased it due to your fairly glowing review of Aorus' models (I believe you reviewed the previous years model)
Shop is refusing to allow me to return it as it has been used, however my use for it has been what has made it apparent that it is awful.
1080P display, high settings, maximum fan settings, all settings optimises for performance, hitting maximum of 35-42FPS when other brands of laptops with 3060's are hitting 40-50FPS on Maximum settings at 1440P (looking at you Lenovo Legion 7)
Honestly I've never regretted a decision more in my life and it's frankly disgusting that the seller won't allow me to return it due to me having used it.
Was told to send it to Aorus for a repair, had it back saying there was nothing wrong with it, stuck with the laptop now despite having numerous professionals look into it for me, no explanation for the low FPS.
Cannot bypass Optimus either and this is when it is plugged in.
Was without my laptop for 2 months after a months wait to even hear back from them in the first place waiting for it to be returned, NEVER purchase Aorus products as their RMA and other Customer service is disgusting, in my honest opinion.

  • @darksaucethepastaboss9130

Clearly on the Asus it's a laptop issue.
on my Asus gm501 zephyrs ( which has the same specs just the active Aero vent and all)
I get a good 68-70°c on the cpu worst case maybe 85 at 4.10ghz (Max boost)
On the gpu around 75°c boosting
    up to 1500mhz+
Average in games can be around
95-120ish in destiny 2 some maps or main story quests can go to 120+ fps
    Warframe hits consistent 144 fps
Doom will hit 144 fps no problem.
    Now here's the Con:
The CPU does run hot. Granted not as hot as some gaming laptops run TBH 75-85 is still acceptable but hot. 90+ is just ouch.
It does temperature spike however if you leave it in performance mode when opening normal apps going from 40-50c
But it's only for a second or 2
Solution: easy fix either go into power saving/balanced mode or in performance advance setting lower the processor state maximum to 90 and it will be running at 1888mhz all the time.
    (which is fine)
I've only noticed a big hit in destiny in multi-player or open world but when it comes to solo story its fps is slightly lower.
    Doom still stays at 144fps
    Warframe still can do 120-144fps
And temps will go to 65-70 for both CPU and gpu. Usually hovering at 60s
    Specs: gtx1070 ( non Max Q)

So when i buy a new laptop and it throttles at the first day, does that mean the laptop is generally bad designed? Or is it just a mistake at this specific laptop i bought?
Cuz i just bought a acer aspire 5 with a mx350 and it should run dota2 with around 80fps on max setting, but i could barely reach 60 fps on lower settings and the fps were
fluctuating all the time. I checked the temps and stress of cpu and gpu, temps were at 70 degree, cpu stress 50% gpu stress fluctating between 90% and 40%, no matter what settings even at 720p and all low settingss and the gpu was sometimes at 90%.
I did send it back, but Im not sure if the mx350 is just the wrong gpu for me or if that was just a production mistake. I only need the gpu for dota.

"Laptop Gaming", the word sounds cool but what I noticed after buying a gaming laptop is:
    - Overheating which reduces the lifespan of other components
    - In my case, I don't use laptop keypad while gaming because I don't want my gaming laptop to look bad. By this I have to keep a distance from screen which makes the screen look so small
    - and the screen are so small with 1920*1080 resolution

i dont think laptops are cheaper than standard pc. if you are not on a move a lot you should get pc but if u travel a lot and you are not at home for week or more then you should invest in laptops. i drive a truck so obviously i need a laptop so i got one for 2800€. for for 2x less money i could get same spec desktop pc which would be more stable. note that gpu in normal pc is as big as whole motherboard on laptop. and laptops are not very friendly in terms of upgrading them. maybe you got good laptop for low price but can you say it will go with time same as desktop?
