Good afternoon, Jenny and Jerry. 🤗. I just came in from the garden doing early spring clean-up in zone 8a (North Carolina). I’m enjoying lunch and also enjoying the tour of your beautiful land. I have 2 perennials that were zapped and are now defoliated. After watching you, I’ve decided to trim the tops because there is new growth coming out of the bottom of the plants. Blessings to everyone for an enjoyable season of enjoyment in the garden. 🪴 🌸🦋❤️

Oh, I wish we had Spring in Highlands, NC. No snow, but we are at a different zone than you and it is so gray out. The tulips and daffodils are out and a leaf or two, but that is it. We are told not to plant until Mother's Day. I have learned the hard way that is correct. It is coming soon! The arctic blast killed our Ivy and another ground cover. In fact, I think I have other dead plants, so I will have a lot of work to do this year. That's a garden....you never know what you will have each year.

Zone 7a- l think the 15 Encore azaleas I planted last fall succumbed to the arctic blast. So sad and upset about lost plants, money and effort. Lost a number of Buford holly too that were still in pots. There is some comfort knowing others had the same issue. Good news is that I planted about 20 rhododendron, and they survived. Already bought new azaleas to replace dead ones. Gardeners are known for patience and resilience. 🌻

Hang in there - hoping you get surprised!!!

I need some yellow foliage in my hosta bed. Jenny, you need some of the tall Alliums in amongst all your beds. I bought 75 bulbs two years ago and 75 more this year. There's something about the giant purple orb that I love. Now I'm worried about you losing some agastache. I bought several of them to put in an area that I have 2 hardy hibiscus. I'm digging out the hibiscus because I am tired of all the water they need. The tag on the agastache says drought tolerant. That's why I bought them.

When it comes to planting things in deep wood chip mulch. How do you know what perennials will be strong enough to bust through the mulch next spring making it a better candidate for the new space now vs waiting for the much to break down and planting in a few years. Bag-a-Bug Japanese beetle traps work great. I bought a bottle of the attractant on Amazon to refill the puck. Works wonders! You have to place the trap away from the plants so that they catch that scent before your plants! Experiment with placement, you may need a couple depending on the shape and size of your yard. Remember to place the trap away from plants they eat! Sorry you have to deal with them. I'd walk around with a bucket during July and August and shake off seemingly pounds of the things into the soapy water.

Living Traditions Homestead has a great video on using the bug attractant, including placement to draw them away from the plants.

I wonder if the agastache succumbed to root competition/water absorption from the tree?

How lucky is your family to be on the receiving end of Gardeners Supply gifts! They have so many wonderful things I would buy from planters to irrigation items. I would have to take my time to make sure I get the most out of my $500 ! How often do we get a chance like this?!!!

I think you are referencing one of Laura’s video - I don’t get freebies from Gardener’s Supply 😉
