The Former Airport of Athens Ellinikon 4K
Ellinikon International Airport, sometimes spelled Hellinikon (Greek: Ελληνικόν) was the international airport of Athens, Greece for 63 years up until 28 March 2001, when it was replaced by the new Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos.
The airport was built in 1938. Germans invaded Greece in 1941, and Kalamaki Airfield (as the site was then known) was used as a Luftwaffe air base during the occupation. World War II, however, did not allow its completion because the architect did not agree to work with the Germans. In 1950, the airport acquired a second runway of 2,250 meters, while the first was increased to 2,250 meters. In 1958 the main corridor was increased again, with a length of 3,000 meters.
In 2020, the works started at Elliniko Airport in order to create a huge park that will bring development to Greece. According to Lamda Development, more than 80,000 jobs will be created, attracting at least 1,000,000 visitors each year. The investment is 8 billion euros and will be one of the largest coastal parks in the world.
