- This is the restoration of a Sears and Roebuck 1949 silvertone car radio ( COSMETIC FOR DISPLAY ) It is a 6 volt radio. Further evaluations of the electronics and tubes and repairs will be necessary to bring the radio completely back to new

Silvertone radio and guitars were some of the best in the day ... you did a great cosmetic job on this ,I would love getting it up and running.
I would LOVE that radio!! Would look amazing in my truck!
The speaker repair was great.
great effort put into this video, thanks a lot
Hi incredible outcome.I see you do things around based on the black spot in your index finger. 30 mins well spent . Bravissimo!!!
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video
If watching Mr. Carlson's Lab has taught me anything it's that proper _electronic_ restoration of old devices like this is NOT as simple as you might think it would be. Just powering it up, chances are good it'd just let all the smoke out of all the old dead and damaged capacitors and damage it further than it may already be. It'd need to have its components carefully checked and replaced before powering up, and then still would need re-calibration. The exterior restoration looks very nice though if it's just going to be a shelf display.
I agree to that. Those electronics are not easy to repair and might just make it worst if it catches on fire.
It says cosmetic restoration. COSMETIC. If those valves are still useable, even if the sockets have crumbled, they would sound great as a single end valco style harp amp with a few bucks spent on power trannie and an ot transformer. Especially with the metal 6 volt pre amp valves. Ill buy em off ya if you wanna sell em?!?

O funcionamento.
Tube gear can be restored, look at "Mr Carlson's lab" channel here. Electronic restoration should be done by a pro, very high voltage inside and protections for technicians were essentially non-existent.
This car radio completely safe. TV's, now one must be careful, especially the older sets. Tube holds a kilovolt range charge and must be bled to gnd using a high wattage resistor.
As with any electrical device, unplug it! Before any restoration or maintenance attempt. And watch out for HV electrolytic caps..Bleed/discharge them..
Very well done....
Excellent job !!!
U should send this out 2 MrCarlson’s lab 2 get the electronics restored 2 the perfection ! That would be 1 hell of a video 2 watch him do that & explain all the workings in 1 of his vids :p
What a radio how well build its from the time when radio was a luxury...I too want it
great narration.....
very good job you're sir 👍👍👍
Parabéns muito bonito
*_BRAVO, BRAVO BRAVO.
Thankyou for the clarification in the video title that this is just the appearance episode, It looks really good. Please when can we see the restoration of the electronics?
Just crack me up !
Felt some old ironic auto-bashing in that rest ...
I thought the Conelrad markings were missing from the dial but looked it up and found that that was a Cold War era thing and didn't come along until the early 1950s.
That isn't old-school radio circuitry; its a God-cursed MESS! (did it ever even FUNCTION?) At least you made it look brand new again. Congrats friend.
Just like brand new. In the box great job 👍☺️
Except it doesn't operate.
Didn't have time to watch all of this but did you have to replace a lot of capacitors? I'm asking because the insides dry out over time.
Nice work GGtv wish i was there to help ya with the electronics :{ you can do ALLOT with just a multi-meter and a pc for part sourcing and a soldering station on ebay its like $20 and a multi-meter is like $5-10
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate this information and advice. Thanks again Bobby
Very good restoration bro 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
Radio from a lost world i will show my kids this is how radio looks back then
Looks good on outside.
That was no restoration you just made it look good you should have powers it up
Maurice Bolster it does say cosmetic
power it up, it will blow up its to far gone it needs complete fresh components.
@@dambuster6387 Wont blow up, might fry something. Most likely not blow up, just slowly feed it the required voltage from the a Variable power supply's (available on ebay) and start measuring with a multi-meter and keeping an eye out for "magic smoke" or very HOT components.
FIRST THING you do is replace ALL electrolytic caps. No exception. You can put new ones in the guts of the old ones to maintain looks, but they have to be changed. Tubes are no problem, the can be obtained. The vibrators must be taken apart and contacts cleaned, magnets replaced and or rejuvenated. They are starting to become unobtainium. New caps, tubes, vibrators, voltage/resistance checks from the manual (Antique Electronics Supply) look for old Rider manuals or Photofact manuals for the particular chassis and you're on the way to operationally restoring a nice old piece of equipment instead of having a shiny brick. It would be worth a LOT more to the right person and YOU would have done it yourself.
@spam lite That's pretty good! Early tube radios used 6 or 12 volts for the filaments, or cathode heaters, and a much higher voltage on the plates of the tubes, probably 150 volts to 250 or 300, depending on the make and model. Towards the end of the "tube Era" they figured out how to do it with only 12 volts on the plates as well. It simplified a lot in the power supply section. I had a tube, AM only radio that I put in a bookcase when I was a kid. I cut 2 pieces of wood to fit in 2 sections of the bookcase; 1 had cutouts for the radio and the other had a cutout for the speaker, and I used about 40 feet of wire with one end crammed into the antenna jack. At night I used to hear 500 Watt or 1000 Watt small stations from all over the US and Canada! That thing had magic ears. When you get an old car radio like that, hook up whatever antenna you will be using. Then, look carefully around the shaft that tunes the stations for a small trimmer adjustment. Tune to a weak station at the upper end of the scale, near 1600 Kcy, and adjust the trimmer for a peak in the station you tuned in. You might have to take the radio out of the car to get at it, but it's worth it! If it's adjusted wrong and you make it right, sometimes it's like getting a brand new radio. The difference is like night and day!
That's great for a prop.
It's working?
does it work ?
all shown at high speed no explanation of what was done or why, was that a reapir to the speaker or just cosmetics?
Vlad Rakin
Is it just me or is this 1949 car radio is making me feel old lol.
We're both old my friend...lol
V nice
beautiful radio nice
Thanks I really appreciate it. I have seven more radios left to the restore and then I will be doing tools and Jacks and a wagon and some other interesting Rusty items
Yea but will it work?
Antiques have traditionally been considered items with at least 100 years of age...
Antique and Vintage License Plates

If you own a passenger vehicle, trailer, semi-trailer or motorcycle with a model year that is more than 25 model years old before January 1 of the current calendar year, you've got an antique! Depending on how you plan to use your vehicle, you may choose antique, vintage or any one of our standard license plates. Antique license plates are provided by DMV, while vintage license plates are original Virginia license plates issued prior to 1976 that you provide. Antique vehicles must be insured with motor vehicle. These radios came out of antique vehicles.
I own over 30 classic cars, here in Germany you get when a car is more than 30 years old, a H plate (Historical) but this is also dependent on the condition.
Come on guys, this vid is called RESTORATION-COSMETIC and not "fully restoration". And for this it turns out fine at the end.
I agree ! This was mostly cosmetic work.
Well, it shows up in the RUclips feed as "Antique 1949 Silverstone Car Radio RESTORATION -" Maybe a change of title is necessary, to prevent folks from feeling like they've had a bait and switch, because RUclips truncates long titles.
Nice that it has been completely restored, but does it work now?
Why you don't put a new speaker?🤷♂️🤷♂️
Anyway it's a good job buddy..!😁😁
Beautiful job, though i have to wonder about the point of spending so much time on the interior, especially the speaker, if the unit is only just for show.
Unit will eventually be fully restored electronically
@@-GetGoTv Groovy. I'm looking forward to the next part.
Almost certain that was lead paint. Consider paint stripper, or at least wet sanding. I know it is a pain.
I was thinking the same thing. Good point thanks
To kick start that radio back to life you'd need Ancient Alien technology.
Quelle patience ! Nostalgie?
Wood Glue hardens when dry and is totally unsuitable to apply to a speaker cone. IF that radio ever works again it will sound very squeaky. And probably scratchy as the coil touches the magnet.
I think these old radios worked off only 6 volt battery. How to reduce from 12volt battery would be interesting
Could've made it work again, cosmetic job was good though.
Is the radio still working?
E o funcionamento?
You should have these videos on full screen.
I gave him a thumbs down then realised the title said "cosmetic" so I took it back off. These automobile tube radios are not easy to fix. I was looking forward to hearing it working.
Don't know what you put on that speaker but it must be as tight as a nuns chuff now..
the panting/sawing sound made this a challenge to watch tbh
I've usually enjoyed all of the sounds. I remember as a child enjoying the noises made on TV shows from scissors cutting construction paper to some of the sounds made on cooking shows
What happened to the circuit diagram in the bottom (2:27) and tube call-outs (2:18) in the top of the housing? One minute they're they're, (22:37) and the next you're painting, and then they're not (26:11). If you are serious about one day restoring this, those will be necessary, since there were numerous small changes in these radios over their production run and you cannot rely on available diagrams. If you're just scraped them out, then it's clear that it's just another buff-n-shine "restoration" video that RUclips has too many of already.
Took pictures of them for copies then save what I could
My ipod also uses vaccum tubes
This is not full restoration, you didn switch on🤔🤔
The title says cosmetic and the description says cosmetic and for display and that there will be further restoration needed to the electronic Park
You can always make it look good, but,,,,,, does it work???
It says in the title and the description to this video that this is a cosmetic restoration and that further electronic restoration will be necessary. Each one of the radios that I have cosmetically restored are going to be restored to working condition
Needs a complete recap , especially the electrolytics capacitors , to recovery original performance .
Cletus Spuckler MrCarlson’sLab would love 2 do that haha :p
Good and cool
Why didn't you turn on the radio ?
Didn’t know silvertone made car radios
Do you happen to sell these great old radios after you cosmetically restore them, or do you keep them??
I'm not sure what we're going to do with them yet but may sell them or they may do a part to where they're mechanically restore to work
@@-GetGoTv
Hey, I totally understand that! If they were mine, and I had done the cosmetic work on 'em, I know that I would have trouble wanting to part with them! 😊
Also, if u can do the electronic restoration(s) as well, then by all means, please consider doing videos on them!!
That'd be great to see & will be watching, just in case you decide to do them!! 🙂
Ron
There was no need to try to fix the speak, new ones are pretty cheap
The purpose and fixing the speaker was it demonstrate how to fix a speaker
What kind of bracelet do you wear?
It's one of them negative ion energy bracelet with Zicam crystals and magnets
It's one of those negative ion energy bracelets with Zaycon crystals and magnets and some other things I don't quite understand
❤
😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
Petr Hil: Co to předpotopní nářadí!To nemá nic jiného než staré šroubováky a hasák(Francouzký klíč)?
Only a cosmetic restoration? Why not make it an operational restoration as well? Nice cosmetic resto though...
next time try rubber cement on your torn speakers it works well..
Barátunk eléggé Mekk Elek... Főként az ütött szíven, ahogy a hangszóróval bánt...
Desastre no tiene otro adjetivo.!
You have to change the speaker paper instead sticking another papers on it
Is that your pet, or compressor I hear in the background?
English Bulldog and Pitbull
You should have replaced the speaker.
A real one will cost you 80.00 USD if you can find one.
I wanted to hear it play
y?.....funciona o no?.
I really wanted to hear some music come out of that radio what a complete let down.
I watched it to see it work ! Very not cool
Considering the horrible wreck the insides were, we can't be too picky (I would have like to see it work again too)
Wonder what cat it came out of
Mechanicznie OK, ala o elektronice nie masz bladego pojęcia
I wish it were in its normal speed ..
Iove...u....Fc....
How about the sound ? 🙄🙄🙄
