    If watching Mr. Carlson's Lab has taught me anything it's that proper _electronic_ restoration of old devices like this is NOT as simple as you might think it would be. Just powering it up, chances are good it'd just let all the smoke out of all the old dead and damaged capacitors and damage it further than it may already be. It'd need to have its components carefully checked and replaced before powering up, and then still would need re-calibration. The exterior restoration looks very nice though if it's just going to be a shelf display.

    • @dzrotary
      @dzrotary 5 лет назад

      I agree to that. Those electronics are not easy to repair and might just make it worst if it catches on fire.

      It says cosmetic restoration. COSMETIC. If those valves are still useable, even if the sockets have crumbled, they would sound great as a single end valco style harp amp with a few bucks spent on power trannie and an ot transformer. Especially with the metal 6 volt pre amp valves. Ill buy em off ya if you wanna sell em?!?

    Tube gear can be restored, look at "Mr Carlson's lab" channel here. Electronic restoration should be done by a pro, very high voltage inside and protections for technicians were essentially non-existent.

    • @40Kens
      @40Kens 3 года назад

      This car radio completely safe. TV's, now one must be careful, especially the older sets. Tube holds a kilovolt range charge and must be bled to gnd using a high wattage resistor.
      As with any electrical device, unplug it! Before any restoration or maintenance attempt. And watch out for HV electrolytic caps..Bleed/discharge them..

    • @Paturnus1
      @Paturnus1 5 лет назад +3

      FIRST THING you do is replace ALL electrolytic caps. No exception. You can put new ones in the guts of the old ones to maintain looks, but they have to be changed. Tubes are no problem, the can be obtained. The vibrators must be taken apart and contacts cleaned, magnets replaced and or rejuvenated. They are starting to become unobtainium. New caps, tubes, vibrators, voltage/resistance checks from the manual (Antique Electronics Supply) look for old Rider manuals or Photofact manuals for the particular chassis and you're on the way to operationally restoring a nice old piece of equipment instead of having a shiny brick. It would be worth a LOT more to the right person and YOU would have done it yourself.

    • @Paturnus1
      @Paturnus1 5 лет назад +1

      @spam lite That's pretty good! Early tube radios used 6 or 12 volts for the filaments, or cathode heaters, and a much higher voltage on the plates of the tubes, probably 150 volts to 250 or 300, depending on the make and model. Towards the end of the "tube Era" they figured out how to do it with only 12 volts on the plates as well. It simplified a lot in the power supply section. I had a tube, AM only radio that I put in a bookcase when I was a kid. I cut 2 pieces of wood to fit in 2 sections of the bookcase; 1 had cutouts for the radio and the other had a cutout for the speaker, and I used about 40 feet of wire with one end crammed into the antenna jack. At night I used to hear 500 Watt or 1000 Watt small stations from all over the US and Canada! That thing had magic ears. When you get an old car radio like that, hook up whatever antenna you will be using. Then, look carefully around the shaft that tunes the stations for a small trimmer adjustment. Tune to a weak station at the upper end of the scale, near 1600 Kcy, and adjust the trimmer for a peak in the station you tuned in. You might have to take the radio out of the car to get at it, but it's worth it! If it's adjusted wrong and you make it right, sometimes it's like getting a brand new radio. The difference is like night and day!

      Antique and Vintage License Plates

      If you own a passenger vehicle, trailer, semi-trailer or motorcycle with a model year that is more than 25 model years old before January 1 of the current calendar year, you've got an antique! Depending on how you plan to use your vehicle, you may choose antique, vintage or any one of our standard license plates. Antique license plates are provided by DMV, while vintage license plates are original Virginia license plates issued prior to 1976 that you provide. Antique vehicles must be insured with motor vehicle. These radios came out of antique vehicles.

      I own over 30 classic cars, here in Germany you get when a car is more than 30 years old, a H plate (Historical) but this is also dependent on the condition.

    Fajna sprawa odnowić coś, ale mam nadzieję, że wiesz, iż napakowanie tyle farby i kleju na membranę głośnika, pogorszy jego właściwości. Wychodzę z założenia, że tam, gdzie w rolę wchodzi bezpieczeństwo, i/lub jakaś istotna cecha, to nie ma co bawić się w sentymenty, lecz trzeba zużytą/uszkodzoną część, zastąpić nową, lub inną, możliwie podobną, nawet używaną, ale SPRAWNĄ. Trzeba było przeszukać net i spróbować znaleźć inny głośnik o zbliżonych parametrach, wstawić i cieszyć się odnowionym, sprawnym na lata urządzeniem. A jak lampy okażą się wyemitowane, to też będzie kombinowanie, żeby im poprzywracać emisję? (powodzenia...) Radio ładnie odnowione wizualnie, ale czy włączone do prądu zagra?

    What happened to the circuit diagram in the bottom (2:27) and tube call-outs (2:18) in the top of the housing? One minute they're they're, (22:37) and the next you're painting, and then they're not (26:11). If you are serious about one day restoring this, those will be necessary, since there were numerous small changes in these radios over their production run and you cannot rely on available diagrams. If you're just scraped them out, then it's clear that it's just another buff-n-shine "restoration" video that RUclips has too many of already.
