Banana kicks have been a regular feature of aussie rules football for as long as i can recall (back to 1960s). Aussie rules uses a similar shaped ball as you do in rugby. That said, nice examples shown in this video - respect to all rugby players and the game itself.

Apparently in the 70's an All Black's kicker put over one from the sideline kicking the ball parallel to the tryline, from the 22 I think.... the wind did the rest. Good old Althletic Park and the Wellington southerly combined.
Don't know who the kicker was or exact details. Perhaps someone else here knows.

It was in 1961 versus France at Athletic Park in Wellington - 'Then the kick went over, delirium. Don Clark later claimed to have aimed the kick along the 25 yard line and let the wind take it through the posts.' 137 km/h winds in Wellington that day

I normally love these vids - but are they all banana kicks? Hernandez’s kick and Biggar’s are true banana kicks because they are being kicked intentionally out of hand
Surely the place kicks at goal are just using the wind and are not true banana kicks?

Don't fully understand what the fuss is about. The bend / hook whatever has been around since the '60''s. I was even taught to do it (with both feet) and played No8. It surprises me however, that the modern, rather well paid players do not seem to be able to do this or employ this style more than they do.

@@cowboyup6744 Just like the Scottish teams of the '50 's . The joke at the time was that it was harder to get out of the Scottish team than to get into it . Mr Cheika also gives the impression that he should be on the field and in control. This however, is not a good manager's job. The AB's have always played to the strengths of their players (and their team spirit). The manager cannot lead the team once the team are on the field.
