If I recall correctly, in the lore Kronos is a hive fleet that separated after the Great Rift appeared. With such a fuckhuge number of daemons running around, Kronos specialized in fighting Chaos. For this reason they're more shooty (Chaos loves melee) and they have a stronger Shadow in the Warp (to the point where they've been able to close warp rifts by just being in the general area).
The More You Know
Your pretty much right. They also reuse the useless biomatter of other hive fleets in order to get more biomass to fight the daemons. Also I think they were around before the Citrix malidictum.

Some advice to add on what the other guy posted, play what you like; don't pick something you think looks horrendous just because it's doing well, GW likes to shit on non marines armies that do too well competitively, and you are going to spend hours looking at it while building and painting, might as well be something you find pleasing to the eyes.

I thought the exact same thing.
TFW you can't tell if it's an official GW mini or if they're proxying with various lumps of gristle.
My friends joke that they literally have no idea what any given Tyranids unit, stratagem or psychic power does. They say that I could put down a figure and say, "This one is a Metathrope. It allows me to remove D3 enemy models per turn from the field as they are sucked into the Warp. It's also a Synapse creature and has 14 Wounds, T8 and a 2++ Save." They'd be like, "Ok, cool."

You think dis is a zoggin joke?
Not gonna lie, to help with this Covid 19 isolation i've just bought a few models from my local game store to help support them while their traffic is low during this pandemic (They actually had to close off after yesterday when AZ's governor made non essential stuff close at 5 pm :( ) and I'm having a lot of fun cutting, glueing, and painting my own models! I picked up some sisters of battle, assault marines, and a primaris chaplin because he looked really cool!
Sisters of battle has some of the most cool looking figures... I mean, have you seen the organ tank?
Tyranids in Lore: hgreat to all live in the galaxy.
Tytanids in Tyranid Mod for Dark Crusade: spam other factions with f-load of units.
Tyranids on table: please, nerf Space Marines.
A lot of people have been saying double the points for all models and weapons across the board, then do fine tuning. Would probably work to balance things for the nids since they should get a slight points decrease.
Death korps of krieg on table:
Thank you for coming to my Ted talks
I don't care wether Tyranids are good or bad, it's just the epicness of seeing a thousand little bugs scurry across the table that makes it fun
Thank you matt for everything you've done and especially for spreading out to different genres
I love how you and Bricky are doing these types of videos on Warhammer 40k in between the episodes.
11:15
*Laughs in Malanthrope*
13:43
The Malanthrope has an ability that makes it so if you roll a 4+, an enemy model within 1 inch of it takes a mortal wound, and if that kills that model, you can reroll hit rolls of 1 made against every model with the same faction keyword. The Gorgon warlord trait makes it so you can do that AGAIN. It is pretty fucking awesome. Also the rerolling of ones makes him actually a pretty scary thing in melee. So the moral of the story is: Malanthropes are VERY good with Gorgon.
16:20
Because in the lore, Kronos is specialized for fending off daemons, and nullifying psykers is VERY good when fighting daemons.
Also i found another "Exploit" For how to double your Synapse range:
-Pick Leviathan
-Make a psyker your warlord.
-Warlord Trait: Synaptic Lynchpin.
-Give them Hive Nexus
-Maybe give them like a Resonance Barb or something for better psykic shenanigans.

I need to change my pants now
I honestly recommend watching Tabletop Tactics. They are 'professional' players who go to all the tournaments, so they know what they're on about. But most importantly they're just fun to watch. They talk through everything they do and why they do it, so it's good to learn the game and tactics.
GW also send them stuff early, so they can play games with preview rules etc.
(One of the guys came second in a large tournament with a Grey Knight list, who aren't deemed that strong).
With all the time we have atm, definitely give them a watch!
"Aren't that strong"
Are we talking before or after Ritual of the Damned? Because my god; they went from being something that was kinda meh to field to being arguably as psychically powerful as the Thousand Suns; and more likely to be played because of Tides.
Remember to keep trying to explain things to us people BRAND NEW to WH: 40K
Matt: "Unstoppable Hunger is so good : ^)"
Me, a Blood Angels player: ".............Should I tell him?"
No worries on the delay, gotta stay safe. Keep up the good work!
This is an underrated comment. Have an up vote fellow blood angel
I would honestly love to watch a 50 minute video on a faction.
The reason the kronos specific stratagem is about the psychic phase is lore. In the lore, kronos is specialized for fighting chaos. Their specialization is two-fold, they have more accurate ranged weapons to counter chaos demons. Since demons have no bio-mass and corrupt what they kill, the hive fleet uses range to bombard them. The second part is hive fleet kronos has a much stronger shadow in the warp. It's strong enough to force demons to de-materialize in some cases. The stratagem is a representation of how much better they are at suppressing the warp.
I have the same level anticipation for this 40k series as I do for the Astartes channel to put out part 5
Unpopular opinion: call these videos Acutal Faction Spotlights
That's called a request, not an opinion
tbh, kinda wish he went over the whole thing, I'm new at warhammer and want to try tyranids (starting on tts) and so I wanted to know matts opinion...
Another Matt, from MiniWarGaming, actually plays a lot of Tyranids. They have a whole video series on how to play 40k, I highly recommend you try it out!
I've never played Warhammer 40k before but I have played Warmachine/Hordes. I have some vague knowledge about Warhammer though. Such as it using 6 sided dice for pretty much everything. So for any out there wondering what he means by 5 up saves it means that you roll a 6 sided dice and land on a 5 or 6 you 'save' with that unit. I dunno what that means exactly but *good* happens. So you want a 'lower # up' on saves since you get a better chance of *good*
he man i really like this type of warhammer content. i also play tyranids and they are so much fun. keep up the good work
"Tyranids actual faction spotlight"
I think you are mostly right about the custom hive fleets. But there is one exception... make a patrol detachment, put in Old One Eye and a ripper swarm, give it the +1 to hit on a charge and maybe the heal one wound per turn or rerolling advance rolls and your old one eye suddenly creates additional attacks on 3+... you loose the ability to put on some psychic powers on him, but damn... on a 3+ :D
Better than expected, but still, a few clarifications :
1 : Tyranids can actually fit a truck load of detachments. 2 battalions is extremely easy to fill, and as a matter of fact, you should have 2. (if you need filling, Ripper Swarms are 33pts per unit)
2 : The best faction is Kronos, no questions. The rerolls one to hit is way too important, Symbiostorm is a great spell. That's a thing you have to remember as a nid player, you shoot a lot, you shoot really damn hard, but you hit like shit. Anything that helps making your units more reliable is a must have.
3 : Jormungandr is unfortunately not good in the current meta, not because it's actually weak, but because top tiers units will simply ignore your cover bonus. Centurions and Eliminators especially. Also the units that put Jormungandr on the map are not really super effective atm (Trygons, Raveners, Lictors) There's the devilgaunts trick that is easy to pull off and will 100% kill anything...but that's not going to win a battle I'm afraid.
Here's the list of 2000pts used by the best Tyranid player at LVO, if that helps anyone
1st battalion : Kronos
Malanthrope (warlord)
Tyranid Prime with Gland, Sacs, swor & ST
Hormagaunts x29 with Glands
Termagants x22 with FB
Warriors x9 (Spitters & swords, Venom cannons, with Enhanced Resistance)
Hive Guards x6 (Impaler)
2nd Battalion: Kronos
Flyrant with MRC, Devourers w/ worms, Sacs, Glands xenogenic acid
Tyrant with Venom Cannon, MRC, Sacs, Glands, Venomthorn Parasite
Swarmy
3x Ripper x3
2 Exocrines, one with Dermic Symbiosis.
I use a very similar list, but with only one Tyrant, more warriors, and a Neuro.
Mat:*shows the big boi with the even bigger wings*
Henchman 24:"Those wings are just big old "kill me" signs"
damn i'm early didn't even get the notification yet
Honestly, it's nice to see how someone who is even newer to the game than me quickly pick up on the competitive side of things and grasp the meta. From my own experience, there doesn't seem a lot of credit given to fast learners for some reason.
That said, if I were to recommend a competitive army in the current edition, I'd push more for decent mid-range to close-combat armies like Blood Angels, Grey Knights or Orks. There are so many shooty armies saturating the current meta (or at least my meta) that I try not to push stuff like Tau, Imperial Guard or Iron Hands cuz the game just feels less fun when half your army is shot off the board before Round 2 (that or trying to avoid the gunlines by constantly hugging LoS-blocking terrain). In my opinion, melee is surprisingly more nuanced and arguably a lot more fun with all the tricks you can pull off.
I play AoS but I am LOVING this series on 40k. This series has been so interesting and different from the other content around the hobby. After recently making the jump from video games to tabletop gaming it’s been incredible watching someone else make the jump as well 😁
If you want to still make other warhammer 40k content, I would highly recommend Warhammer Gladius. Its Civ meets warhammer and its not too bad.

Your love of Tyranids is exactly how I feel about Thousand Sons, I played them and fell in love. It is important to play to have fun, and getting into it you just play what you like and you'll lose. That being said if you're playing a game with friends and Warhammer games are super long most of the time a 2000 point game with me and my friends takes around 3-4 hours, I would much rather be having fun for those 3-4 hours than being miserable and playing something just to win. Hell I have one friend that all they play are Orcs and they have the most fun every single game. It doesn't matter if they win or lose, they always have a blast playing them
No worries Matt. We enjoy your content no matter what, and we are more than understanding of the current predicaments everyone is in. Take care, stay safe, and keep doing whatever you enjoy!

Tyranids as a horde army - we expensive as shit
Ork players - *Laughs in dakka*
My personal favorite army is the Grey Knights. They have in my opinion some of the best looking models, cool lore, awesome and easy to grasp color scheme, lots of conversion and extra bit ideas. But I haven't played them in a year due to the fact that pre-psychic awakening (Ritual of the Damned) rule book, Grey Knights were not good they were meh at best. Now though with that new rule book I mentioned they actually got good or at the very least better then where they were and they can can go competitive now and stand a chance.
So they are zerg that don't simp and marines are overpowered. Classic SC2
*GLARES IN BLOOD ANGEL*
I'ma still watch me some MagikarpUsedFly, tho.
You gotta take a look at playing Infinity. 1) High quality miniatures and the typical army is all unique sculpts. 2) Best skirmish level gameplay out there. 3) Balance is really good. 4) Costs maybe $150 to $200 to have a really solid army with a lot of variety, and is genuinely difficult to spend more than $400 without buying a second army.
I loved your League videos. Then I started getting interested in Warhammer a few days ago. When I saw you were involved, I just had to dive into the hobby. Still debating between Tyranids and Necrons. I've been going back and forth... Can't wait to see your journey in this hobby!

Then again iirc 4th was fight phase the game, and every infantry unit in our book had fleet of claw, and genestealers rending claws were the equivalent of powerswords.

If you end up playing league more, here are some fun time things I recommend. Phase rush ekko- you hit somebody three times and then you start ZOOMING. Conqueror hecarim- actually pretty good and fun. Just diving into the enemy team is sooo fun even IF you just die. Full ap Nunu and Willump- his ultimate has a 250% ap ratio and it is one of my favorite things rn.
Honestly man I used to watch your league videos and Its super hype to find out you got into warhammer, IK this'll probably get lost but its cool to see you're still grinding

If custom fleets were more like successor chapters where one could opt in for their parent fleet's psychic powers and stratagems they'd be much more interesting.
Been playing tyranids for a little bit over a year now. Kraken and kronos are my main hive fleets. The new blood of Baal book has new physic power for kronos that on 6s generate extra hits. Great on hive guard or exocrine. Now im not playing competitive tournaments, just have a good lgs that plays semi competitive list..... I will say its called plastic crack for a reason as i have around 8000 pts.....also custom hive fleets are for casual game only really as you lose the new physic powers.
Been watching a ton of more videos on WH 40k lately. Was curious about the game a little. This explained a bit and intrigued my interest. Cant wait to see more! Keep it up karp
