I’d add something else: if buying used models, there’s a safe way to remove the paint with water based nail polish remover (NOT alcohol based; that will melt the plastic). After that, you’re free to repaint the models. Ezpz, cheap models for your armies.
Edit: Some comments have pointed out that the problem isn't alcohol but acetone in the solution. ACETONE will melt te plastic, careful!

Dettol. DETTOL MY BROTHERS! If there is one single trick I can spread to everyone out there, it's that Dettol can be used to safely remove paint from plastic and resin miniatures, it's super gentle on the model, just needs about a 15 minute soak and some light brushing with a toothbrush or something followed by a good wash to remove the smell of Dettol.

Everyone says not to use Ceramcoat and Apple Barrel acrylic craft paints on miniatures, but for decades I've been doing exactly that to great success. $1.69 per 2oz bottle goes a LONG way towards saving a ton of money on paints, and they're easy to mix for new shades & highlights, or thin with water for washes. Just make sure to spray on a clear finish coat or glaze once the paint dries to protect your paint job and it'll be fine. There, that's HUNDREDS saved on Citadel paints & inks.

I recently started playing 40k. For the time i stick to second hand models, preferably pre painted so i can start playing with a somewhat good looking army.
I'm almost at 100€ spent with some lucky shots(like some broadsides for under 12€ each) and i can easily get to 1300 points. It's a great hobby and although the rules at first seem intimidating i already felt comfortable playing during my second session.
I would recommend Wargames like 40k to anyone keen on strategy games as the nature of tabletop games offers so much choice and place for originality. The social component is also something i really like.

  • @ZennithMT
    @ZennithMT 4 года назад +1

I'd also like to add that if you buy pre-painted units and you don't like the paint job then you can use strip the paint. Use ELO from Testors and youtube some tutorials.
Also Rust-oleum 2x primer works really well as well. Get a white and a black and do the black on the whole model and then white pointing from the top. It's called a zenithal highlight and will really add some life into your paint job. Make sure when you're priming you hold it far enough away so that the chems evaporate before it hits the plastic otherwise it will eat your plastic.

  • @NeoRevanchist

Another way to save money is to look into what kind of army you want to run. Army's can be horde or elite and horde are typically more expensive. A 5 man Custodian guard squad costs around £35 and gives you roughly 240 points because they're beefy bois. A 30 man Ork squad costs around £60 and gives you roughly 220 points because they're a numbers based force.
As matt said you can also proxy models, so for example two boxes of custodes troops and two jetbike squads will cost you around £140. Run one custodian as a Shield captain and one bike as a shield captain. You now have a battalion of a shield captain, shield captain on bike, three 3 man custodes squads and a 5 man bike squad. That's a 1200 point army for reasonably cheap.
Planning your army ahead on something like battlescribe saves a lot of cash in the long run.
People also make the mistake of thinking an army is cheaper if you get more bang for your buck in terms of models, it's often the other way around. An army is comprised of points so the more points you get for your money is where you save money. Sure buying 5 dudes for £35 instead of 10 dudes for £15 seems less worth it. But if you need five boxes of those £15 guys to match the points of a single £35 box then you aren't actually saving money.

For buying models I highly suggest the "Buy Sell and Swap" Facebook groups. There you can find models in various stages of use for dirt cheap prices because people often have leftovers. You might not find what you need immediately, but there are new posts/listings so if you're patient you can find a really great deal on what you want. I recently got 3 Death Guard HQ's and a squad of Plague Marines for only $15.
"Warhammer Buy Sell and Swap" for the UK
"Warhammer Australia Buy Swap Sell" for Australia
"BUY SELL TRADE Warhammer 40k" and a lot more if you look them up.
Always pay with Paypal though and don't be afraid to ask for more pictures to make sure you're getting what you want.
Also if you ever see these acronyms on a listing and wonder what they mean
NIB - New in Box (Brand new, still in the original box it was sold in)
NOS - New on Sprue (The models are still on the plastic frame but are unpainted, just lacking a box)
OOP - Out of Production (This means the model is from an older set/run and is no longer sold by Games Workshop)
Assembled - The model is built so you don't have to do it. But that also means you don't have the chance to customise/pose it how you want. They're typically a lot cheaper than NIB/NOS tho
Primed - Assembled and just has a coat or two of spray paint.

My friends and I have been playing 40K for around 6 years in total now I think and I can still remember us sitting together in a circle around one of our computers and watching all these awesome Battlereports, thinking to ourselves "man we will never be able to make Terrain like this or paint our models as good as that."
I think a good tip to people starting out with warhammer and especially painting minis or building terrain is watching a ton of tutorials online. I was amazed at the speed we all got better at painting from literally just watching people showing off painting techniques in videos.
As for Terrain: It's similar to the whole mountain dew can thing. If you and your friends agree to a wooden box being a hill, then heck it's a hill.
There are a lot of cheap ways to get nice terrain: For example MDF Terrain. It's lasercut terrain made of medium-density fibreboard and is cheap as hell compared to all the plastic terrain.
But you don't even have to buy MDF terrain - making Terrain yourself feels rewarding as fuck and is way easier than people think. With just a board of styrofoam you can make amazing stuff like cliffs, rocks, temples and way more. Same with painting minis: watching a lot of cool Terrain tutorials is a big help here.
We got so many nice and easy to do ideas from watching amazing RUclipsrs like TheTerrainTutor and by now we build all of our Terrain by ourselves.
I hope atleast some of this is helpful! Loving the series Matt! Have fun with 40k guys!

My recommendation that Matt touched on is to start with skirmish-level games. I started a Warhammer club at my community college and I got a decent amount of people to start off with Necromunda: Underhive, and we've all had a blast spending no more than $42 on GW plastic (not even including the 15% discount you get a local game store), snagging the occasional rulebook and the various starter sets along the way to add in terrain and other fun stuff. I'd personally recommend doing so with a group of people and starting off a proper Dominion campaign and have it last a number of weeks that you feel like, with the winner at the end getting a pat on the back for their reward. For Necromunda, look into Yaktribe, it's a miracle of a website that requires 0 money and 0 downloading. Also, if sci-fi isn't much of your thing, there's Age of Sigmar that has similar skirmish-level games available (or if you're feeling spicy, you and your friends can aid in resurrecting Mordheim today!).

You covered all the major things. one thing to add though would be making your own recasts. Blue stuff, green stuff and milliput can turn one box of models into 10 with some time and skill. Even on a smaller scale say you bought 5 sniper scouts but then you find the box only has 4 snipers and 1 heavy weapon make a cast on a sniper rifle and you save yourself having to buy another box or buying another 1 model from a bits site or ebay.

Battle Primer is a great start, but I would venture Battle Scribe, Tabletop Simulator as a start too! I know you mention them and have another video on those. Also Dark Imperium or Know No Feat sets (this is being replaced in 9th I believe), but splitting that between you and a buddy or sell one half. Core rulebook is in there too in Dark Imperium. Wahapedia is a superb tip, and hope that remains!

I do have a 3D printer, and I mostly use it for making terrain. Most players for 40K and AoS don't need to pay for GW terrain features unless you need a specific model for games rules. Also, I love the idea of starting with Kill Team (40k)/Warcry(AoS), as all of the stuff is transferable to the big games. Proxies are also great for playing at local stores until you get the money to buy the proper models. I've seen guys in Warhammer stores proxy Ork vehicles as Space Marine Tanks, and the employees encouraged it.

@@angrygnome44 Yeah every person I've gotten into the hobby I recommended to start with a barebones Patrol at like 500 points and then fill out the Patrol to its limit. That way they got to use/try models from the different force org slots and it gives a good base for moving into almost any detachment type, and sets you up for detachment combinations which are so important at higher points values.

The worst thing about the citadel rattle cans is that on top of being twice as expensive as krylon or rustoleum cans, they also have like, a quarter of the paint in them. Bought a can of black and I ran out after using it on a tactical squad and a dread. Meanwhile, I've got a can of krylon white primer that I used on over 60 lizardmen models just yesterday and it's still got about a third of the paint left in the can. It would have cost me something like 60-70 dollars to get the same coverage with gw spray.
Also, for the citadel paints, if you like the paints but hate the bottles, it's possible to order empty dropper bottles off of Amazon. Transferring the paint itself might be irritating, but being able to use it easier in the long run helps immensely. Cheers

a great money saver : let's say you got a tactical squad and you need a lascanon for it, you dont need to buy the devastator box (or any options for any unit that is'nt available in the box), just roam the internet for "bits" or "bitz" store and tada, you can buy just that piece of plastic you need, not an entire box. keep in mind the most popular pieces sells fast, but look everywhere and eventually you'll grab what you wanted.

Ask around your club or friends that play if they know any local facebook groups! Usually you can get some pretty good deals on there of people in your area trying to sell off models they don't want, especially if you know people in the competitive scene because at a super high level players will often buy entire armies based on the meta and sell them off for a new army when that army gets nerfed. Most of the time those models that came from competitive players are painted from a tabletop standard upwards to a really good standard depending on what kind of player they are. Plus, if you feel like changing up your army because you don't feel like you enjoy the one you picked, these facebook groups are great ways to recycle armies as the resell value on models is really good. That's my experience in a small scene with collecting models esp on as tight a budget as i have.

  • @Flumpor

One of the biggest aspects for spending less money is to be smart with your purchases and not overspend on things that don't directly help you.
You already mentioned brushes and paint, but terrain is one of the main ways I see beginners pay too much for. Sure nicely painted and specified warhammer terrain is great and all, but it's also limiting.
If you want to test something out like adding a hill, dont go buying extra moss an some stand, just use like a cereal box and overlay it with like a 1$ felt mat from the craft store as a go to proxy or use a broken piece of plastic as half-cover or something. Building a good terrain can be even more difficult then building a good army from scratch because you need to be aware of so much in the game and when you always go out to buy something in small increments because "you need a bit more cover", "this is too big" etc. etc. you are going to spend a lot of money that initially goes nowhere. Sure maybe you can use it for another board sometime, but as a beginner you should follow a focus and be aware of that.
I had this girl who asked me for a budget 1000 point Skitarii list that I made her for 350€ with codex, and she spent close to 300€ on material for his table where only half of it was used and a lot of things were technically unnecessary and if he just went to the craft store it could have been made for like 80-90$ max, all because he kept buying more and more small stuff that added up.
Also maybe if you want to test out the waters just ask someone locally who is considered a bit of an expert or specialist. Like I know a lot about AdMech stuff since that's what I started playing with and there are strategies that can be a lot cheaper and you don't see to often.

You can also make appropriately sized cardboard cutouts of the models with the right size bases. I did that with GW:s other game Adeptus Titanicus, and at the same time changed the measuring system from inches to cm, downscaling it so you can play it on a normal table like a board game.
