I don’t think that captures it. Gouache is basically tempera, opaque watercolor. Acrylic gouache is just matte acrylic. It’s not gouache at all. Gouache bears little similarity to acrylic.
genobambino I agree it bears little resemblance but you are wrong that gouache is basically tempera. It is not. Tempera is traditionally made with a glue, egg or milk binder. Gouache is gum Arabic binder. The concentration of gouache pigment is more than 100 times that of watercolor. The particles of pigment are very different. The biggest misnomer of gouache is that it is “opaque watercolor” that is cringe worthy! I have a video out explaining it very thoroughly. It has basically the same title. I just happened across this one now.
I love how with gouache you have more control with the color. You can make an area a single color and there wont be many lighter and darker hues. I think this is why people think it looks like digital art. Like you used the paint bucket tool on an area. (With watercolor, where the water pools makes a darker color, and the only way to even it out is to micromanage the paint until it dries) Have always loved watercolor but gouache is fun.
I love the texture of gouache so much! It seems like the perfect balance between the opacity of acrylic paint and the blendyness (yes that's a word) of watercolor.
If any of y'all are curious about the cigar art box, it's on Amazon it's call "Blue Q art supplies cigar box". It's fourteen dollars, and they also have a pencil case , messenger bag with the same design. The messenger bag is so cute.
Great video yet again! Gouache is such a fun medium to use. The best advice I ever got about gouache was to add enough water so it is the consistency of pouring cream. It hasn't failed me yet.
Gouache is something I could never get on with, but I always loved how people use it so I'll have to try again! I'm really enjoying trying paints this year, last year I went nowhere near paints other than acrylics hah. I learned that problem with watercolours this week, completely forgot they were transparent :')
I recently mastered prismacolor premier pencils and I've since moved on to gouache, it's not as hard as people say is,try it out I'm sure you'll love it based on the mediums I've seen you enjoying in your videos
I have the same issue. I love the look of acrylics, but they are so challenging to paint with, while watercolours are so much easier to use. I'm wondering if gouache will give me the look of acrylics without the struggle of it.
I'm in love with your artwork. The creativity that you have, that is reflected in your sketchbook and the fact that you give some amazing tips on becoming an artist is so inspiring. To be honest, I'm in a very stressful period of my life, my parents consider that I messed up my life because I didn't continue Art school (got kicked out because, since I speak several languages, they wanted me to become a translator... ) and I decided to take a year off and just focus on what I wanted to do. Now I kinda cut my financial ties with my parents and am working at a fast food in order to continue my studies. But I watched your video concerning the 'Artist tips" and when you said "You don't really have to go to an art school to become an artist", I cried. I mean, I just wanted to hear that... My godmother is an artist in a famous french school so she's all 'YOU NEED TO GO TO ART SCHOOL", my parents are the same and they really consider that I'm a failure. Okay, I might have wandered off a bit... But my point is, I think I have never cried so hard because of a video that encouraged me so much. Thank you for giving me hope, thank you for believing in people like me. You're such an inspiration, thank you. (Ps : xD Sorry I'm puting this on this video, i finished watching all of the videos
Gumi, your comment really touched me. I'm sorry you're going through such a tough time right now. I wouldn't dare tell you what to do, I don't know you or the circumstances involved. I just thought I'd offer a different perspective for you to consider... it's true, you don't have to go to art school to become an artist. You don't have to have a degree in Computer Science to become a programmer, or a Nursing degree to learn how to care for others, etc. But, if you want to get hired in any of those fields, you're going to need a degree. That's just a fact. Maybe your most important question should be, "What type of artist do I wish to become?" By that, I mean you sound like you'd want to support yourself with your art unless I misunderstood. That usually means working for someone else, in which case you'd be a "working" artist. Businesses being... well, businesses, it's probably the same for artists as about any other profession. No one I've ever run across hires self-taught people. It sounds like your Godmother might be an excellent person to go to for advice. I mean, she has "made it," hasn't she? She's a "working" artist at a prestigious school. I'll guarantee that she didn't just stumble into that position. She would know what it takes to succeed, wouldn't she? It just sounds like maybe you need a lot of answers to a lot of questions right now. If you don't feel comfortable going to her, then please find someone somewhat successful that you can talk to and hopefully get those answers. I just know the clock is ticking for you. I've been where you're at but at the time was offered no financial means to go to school. I made some bad choices and ended up going back to school in my mid-late 20's, while working full time and with two young children. It's HARD, perhaps the hardest thing I've ever done in my life and that's saying a lot. I would hate it if that is what you face. That's the only reason for me sticking my nose in. :) I hope you can find some way to reconcile with your parents even tho you may have to agree to disagree. Life truly is short. I lost both of my parents within a year of each other a few years back. No one takes the place of a parent. I still miss both several times a day so badly it's like a knife to my gut. Always will be, I guess.Sorry this was so long. I actually hate typing, lol. I truly wish you the best and hope you find your answers soon.
You don't have to go to art school in order to be successful as an artist, or to succeed in life in general. I personally know some very successful artists who dropped out of art school, even much more successful than those who graduated from art school.
For someone who isn't familiar with the mechanics behind the mediums you use your work is quite lovely and you definitely know how ro make them work. Thank you for sharing.
super interesting Video! now i want to fish up my Gouache again and painting with them. i didnt use them for 2 years. i think i lose all the skills i had at that time XD
nail polish remover works great when you're trying to remove price stickers etc! at least for surfaces that aren't shiny/treated with polish/sensitive :)
+annalinawe Another great, little-known way to remove adhesive residue is by rubbing a small amount of oil on the spot, then wiping away the oil with either a cleaner or a paper towel. Any kind of oil works, I usually use vegetable oil because it's already in my kitchen. Oil will usually remove adhesive much faster than acetone or alcohol with minimal scrubbing too.
This video came at a spookily good time, I bought some gouache paints the other day and knew I was using them wrong but couldn't work out why (I wasn't wetting them at all...)
Awesome! Thanks for doing this, I had gone to my local Michaels and I bought myself acrylics to start with, I was to unsure about using Gouache but now I'm excited about trying it out, I'll get some the next time.
Just a color theory tip from a fellow painter. I was taught to make a colorful black by mixing blue and brown (Ultramarine blue +Burnt Umber) By ratio if you wanting it balanced equal parts blue and brown. If you want a cooler black, add more blue than brown. If you want a warmer black, add more brown than blue to the mixture.
I just found your videos and I adore your painting confident ability to mix colors, especially in gouache! I'm also fairly new to the medium myself and I find myself learning a lot and inspired by your channel, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for educational video! I've always been drawing with pen\pencil so I find myself struggling when it comes to colour and painting. Hope to see more tutorials on various themes from you! Maybe it will help me to develop my own style.
Definitely gonna try out gouache after watching this video. I love using acrylic and watercolor, but sometimes I want some parts to be opaque and more detailed. Using acrylic to paint details could be hard, especially to do fine detail. Thank you for the video ❤️❤️
damn...I was so sure I watched a video with the landscape sketch that you showed in the beginning, but I just cannot find it on your channel anymore... X.x'
To take stickers or price tags off of items use a hairdryer. On the low setting heat up the label and the adhesive will pull up leaving it clean and not sticky.
You can mix a black with all the primary colours ( red and blue to get a dark purple and add a bit of yellow) - the black isn't the flat black but it is more interesting black than from tube. For watercolour the most common combination is ultramarine and burnt sienna tho. Most water media artists disdain using black from tube. I disagree that watercolour is expensive, sure it is up front but tubes last forever. With good mixing colour knowledge, you could get lots of colours from 10 tubes or less, some artists just use 3-4. Basic and non-cadmium colours are usually series 1 or 2 so on lower end of pricing a in a brand.
when are you going to do a video of your sketchbook, i'am so excited to watch it, please do it soon! thanks for doing that many amazing videos, they are so inspiring :)
I love this video! the eye looked so pretty, I really need to start experimenting with colour more after seeing your sketch haha. :3 I know Grace Passerotti did a gouache basics video, that might be helpful for you and others reading this too! ^-^ xx (I'm insanely excited for your sketchbook vid!!!!)
Yo en oleo, gouche, y acrílico utilizo solo los colores primarios más el blanco. En acuarela que me resulta algo más complicado mezclar los colores utilizo alguno mas
omg I thought about asking you about a video about gouache - and a day later it's in my sub feed. worked out awesome :D I just got myself some gouache. first time I tried it, I fought with it, but now I love it! so great for plein air sketches (James Gurney's fault hehe, his RUclips videos are so awesome)
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I absolutely hate stickers and sticker residue- it makes me gag! I've found that odorless paint thinner (like the stuff you use with oil paint) will remove sticker residue. I've used it on paint brushes, bottles, jars, basically anything!
You are the best! Great video as usual. I've been using acrylic forever and I have been meaning to work with gouache. Wondering for future videos, Do you have any weird moments with gouache lasting well? I've heard you have to frame it and keep it at certain temperatures but I assume it's fine and doesn't move around for the most part. Great work!
Can gouache be squeezed into little pans and stored in a watercolor-type box? Or once squeezed out, does gouache have to be used right away...because it dries out fast like acrylics? Thanks.
+Sylvia Catalano I would say from my experience, yes-ish. The better seal the more likely it will last. And because it's water-based, it comes back from being tried pretty decently. I used little cups with lids for mixing and storing, and they lasted a fair amount of time. They only ever got thick and gummy if left for like a year.
Hello thanks for the video that was pretty awesome and inspiring! I just wanna ask when you squeeze the paints into pallete, how will it dry? Does it crack or harden or lose quality over time? Thank you in advance.
Love the video!! If you dont mind, do you think you could do a little tutorial on how to use manga studios (clip)?? It would be veryyy appreciated because I have it and i dont use it because i dont fully understand it all. Thank you
Hello Audra, I wanted to know which colors of the brand do you have or recommend? PDTA: I love your art and your channel, keep on doing such beautiful art :)
Hey Audra! I love gouache paints and i came back to this video after i had an issue.. The hardest thing about gouache is when i try to add more paint on top it reactivates so fast i cant work with it. If i try to it takes away ALL the paint. I use talens and its a huge problem for me. Also i dont have any acryla gouache avalible in my country.
You can mix less water with your paint (or even using straight out of tube with no water). Work quickly and try to keep brush-to-paper contact minimal. In any areas that you dont want to muddy the color, leave it white as you would with watercolor. You can use liquid latex to keep the area of the page white.
This was a helpful video! Thank you for sharing :) I have a question though. How do you store your gouache? Do you leave it in a palette like watercolor since it's workable anyway after drying. Or do you prefer working with it fresh off the tube?
Do you get a good amount of use out of a tube of gouache? It's so pricey, but I thought the same thing about artist grade watercolor until I realized one tube will last you a pretty good chunk of time. Btw, your work is beautiful! It reminds me of J.A.W. Cooper's, especially the gouache pieces.
Is it possible to paint with one movement and that would be it , sort of like painting a model with enamel or do you always have to work in layers even if tiny amounts of paint .
I love the look of gouache on black paper, but if it is a waterbased paint, what kind of black paper should I use? I can't find black watercolor paper and other kinds of black paper don't seem to work very well. What do you suggest for black paper with gouache paints?
Super useful video! Loving the cheeky sneak peek of your sketchbook, can't wait for the tour!
Oh hey!!!! :)

+Jellie Bee I'm definitely excited to try gouache, I really enjoying using watercolours however, I've struggled with acrylics so so much
I have the same issue. I love the look of acrylics, but they are so challenging to paint with, while watercolours are so much easier to use. I'm wondering if gouache will give me the look of acrylics without the struggle of it.
very helpful:) try heating price stickers with a hair dryer and they will peel off easily;)
Or massage it with oil and then use a tissue or cloth to wipe it. Works well too :)
I'm in love with your artwork. The creativity that you have, that is reflected in your sketchbook and the fact that you give some amazing tips on becoming an artist is so inspiring.

+Madhu T aww thank you!!!
iraville Iraville!! ❤❤
Also there is Gum Arabic gouache and acrylic gouache. When I first got into gouache I made the mistake of buying the Holbien Acrylic Gouache.
+Connie Faye Good to know!
What was the problem with the Acyrlic? I'm about to go shopping to try this out.
it doesn't reconstitute like watercolor. So make sure your gouache is gum arabic based.
nail polish remover works great when you're trying to remove price stickers etc! at least for surfaces that aren't shiny/treated with polish/sensitive :)

aaah nice i'll try that too :)
Tea tree oil works very very well with this as well. But does smell and be aware of allergies/sensitive people
Gouache is so cool, i love how easy it is to clean up
This video came at a spookily good time, I bought some gouache paints the other day and knew I was using them wrong but couldn't work out why (I wasn't wetting them at all...)
You are amazing, Audra!!
Awesome! Thanks for doing this, I had gone to my local Michaels and I bought myself acrylics to start with, I was to unsure about using Gouache but now I'm excited about trying it out, I'll get some the next time.
This was really helpful! ^-^
Great video and information. Gouache is beautiful as an underpainting for pastels by the way.
i like the almost vector drawing affect you get because it doesn't blend- this video was super helpful thanks!
Just a color theory tip from a fellow painter. If you want a cooler black, add more blue than brown. If you want a warmer black, add more brown than blue to the mixture.
For the sticky part, you should try Goo Gone, it takes off the residue left by stickers (its usually at Home Depot)
Thank you! About to start some illustrative gouache painting today.
I love your work so much! The efforts you put into them is astonishing, for sure one of my biggest art inspirations keep it up!
This is a good amount of information, especially for people who do not know much about gouache. Thank you!
So cool! I love how flat and chalky gouache looks; I feel it resembles digital art a lot.
Can I ask how many and which pigments you use in gouache?
I really like these saturated looks and guoche is the perfect thing! :D
I just found your videos and I adore your painting confident ability to mix colors, especially in gouache! I'm also fairly new to the medium myself and I find myself learning a lot and inspired by your channel, thank you for sharing!
I just got my first set of gouache last night, so what perfect timing for this video! Thanks for posting!
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH !
Thanks for educational video! I've always been drawing with pen\pencil so I find myself struggling when it comes to colour and painting. Hope to see more tutorials on various themes from you! Maybe it will help me to develop my own style.
You're such a wonderful teacher! Thank you, I really, really, really love your videos
I enjoy your videos so much, your style is dope!
Definitely gonna try out gouache after watching this video. I love using acrylic and watercolor, but sometimes I want some parts to be opaque and more detailed. Using acrylic to paint details could be hard, especially to do fine detail. Thank you for the video ❤️❤️
I LOOOVED this! Maybe a video on how to set up a palette, for both watercolor and Gouache?
damn...I was so sure I watched a video with the landscape sketch that you showed in the beginning, but I just cannot find it on your channel anymore... X.x'
I just spontaneously ordered some Holbein Acryla Gouache, I love this video! It definitely has me excited to try it out, thanks so much. :)
What a great tutorial! Thank you so much for sharing.
To take stickers or price tags off of items use a hairdryer. On the low setting heat up the label and the adhesive will pull up leaving it clean and not sticky.
hey! i loved that video. i wasn't sure about trying gouache or not, but it really helped on my decision. thank you.
Awesome video Audra! Thanks for sharing :)
i heard gouache is like liquid chalk, and has a similar process to maybe digital painting i think
You can mix a black with all the primary colours ( red and blue to get a dark purple and add a bit of yellow) - the black isn't the flat black but it is more interesting black than from tube. +prosesroses I meant using them like gouache they are expensive. If you use them like watercolours they last a long time and are worth it. Good tips!
Thanks for making this video. I've never used gouache and I've just recently heard of this medium. Very helpful video!
I bought some Gouache today after watching your videos :) Never heard of them before tbh xD But I'm soo excited to work with it! ❤
Such a nice informative video. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for your video. FYI - acetone, mineral spirits or Naphtha will take the residue from price tags off with ease.
I love your videos! please more!
when are you going to do a video of your sketchbook, i'am so excited to watch it, please do it soon! thanks for doing that many amazing videos, they are so inspiring :)
I love this video! the eye looked so pretty, I really need to start experimenting with colour more after seeing your sketch haha. :3 I know Grace Passerotti did a gouache basics video, that might be helpful for you and others reading this too! ^-^ xx
(I'm insanely excited for your sketchbook vid!!!!)
Great Video! I am going to try gouache for sure! Thx for the share
Great video, I definitely hope to use more gouache soon.
Really nice and helpful video!
Awesome video, thanks for posting. Very informative.
Sticker residue - you've probably found out by now, but there are a few products (e.g. goo gone) that dissolve sticker glue.
I have the same tin! It was a gift and I love it!
Great video...thanks. Do you ever do flowers? As for the stickers on things you buy...get some goo- gone...works great!
You are very talanted!
Great video very informative!
Loved it! More guache vídeos please s2
so helpfull! I feel like trying gouache now!
Yo en oleo, gouche, y acrílico utilizo solo los colores primarios más el blanco. En acuarela que me resulta algo más complicado mezclar los colores utilizo alguno mas
For 4:00 are those the only colors you use from M.Graham & Co.?
Thanks for informative video and inspiring me to try out gouache!
great! I love it! I always mix white acrylic with watercolors for similar effect :)
I wish i have channel loved as yours someday :)
Just a little tip: Lighter fluid removes any adhesive label from anything. :-)
omg I thought about asking you about a video about gouache - and a day later it's in my sub feed. worked out awesome :D
I just got myself some gouache. first time I tried it, I fought with it, but now I love it! so great for plein air sketches (James Gurney's fault hehe, his RUclips videos are so awesome)
LOVE this! Thanks!
It's just ...wow !!!
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I absolutely hate stickers and sticker residue- it makes me gag! I've found that odorless paint thinner (like the stuff you use with oil paint) will remove sticker residue. I've used it on paint brushes, bottles, jars, basically anything!
Thank you for the shared xp! Will you do a video on paper?
Omg I have the same art supply box you show in this video!
Great work!
"Watercolor and acrylic had a baby", got it!
When you use gouache, do you add more to your palette from the tube or do you pick up older parts?
I've got very little experience with watercolor but would love to try gouache. What's easier in your opinion
"Goo Gone" is awesome stuff to remove price stickers. I use it to remove those awful bar code stickers on brushes.
Where did you get that art supplies box? Thanks for this video!
I have that art supplies pencil pouch!!
Thank you for this!
Hey your videos have been helping a lot! A question I have irrelevant to his video is what kind of settings you use when scanning your lineart?
Daiso sells label remover. Super useful...
Thanks for the history n lesson.
Awesome video. I love it. :D
PDTA: I love your art and your channel, keep on doing such beautiful art :)
that was very informative! thanks
Hey Audra! What paper do you use for each technique? Looooove your videos, keeeep on going gurrrrrl xo
Hey Audra! I love gouache paints and i came back to this video after i had an issue.. You can mix less water with your paint (or even using straight out of tube with no water). Work quickly and try to keep brush-to-paper contact minimal.
In any areas that you dont want to muddy the color, leave it white as you would with watercolor. You can use liquid latex to keep the area of the page white.
@@persephone3892 Thanks a bunch
This was a helpful video! Thank you for sharing :) I have a question though. How do you store your gouache? Do you leave it in a palette like watercolor since it's workable anyway after drying. Or do you prefer working with it fresh off the tube?
Do you get a good amount of use out of a tube of gouache? It's so pricey, but I thought the same thing about artist grade watercolor until I realized one tube will last you a pretty good chunk of time.
Btw, your work is beautiful! It reminds me of J.A.W. Cooper's, especially the gouache pieces.
I love your supplies box! where did you get it? (also, really helpful video, thank you)
I was just asking myself what is gouache and this video just popped up. What are the odds. Thanks so much for explaining gouache.
Using a jar that you found at the bottom of a lake hah Awesome
binding agent is zinc! :)
