  • Shortly before THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE revived his big screen career, producer Irwin Allen made this 1971 made-for-TV film about an underwater city called Pacifica. Set in 2053, it opens with former Admiral Michael Matthews (Stuart Whitman) overseeing the transport of the nation's gold from Fort Knox to Pacifica. Unfortunately, Matthews later learns a planetoid is hurtling straight toward the undersea city. This clip features Whitman, Rosemary Forsyth, Robert Wagner, Robert Colbert, and others. Irwin Allen always did the most imaginative stuff. It wasn't all awesome, but it was always cool.

No guardrails on any of those platforms or stairs... Definite OSHA violation.

This was ballyhooed as the most expensive film yet made for television ($1.4 million - the average TV movie of the day cost $400,000) and was released theatrically overseas, but it - justifiably, IMO - bombed in the ratings when it premiered - ranking 62nd out of 75 shows for the week.

Irwin Allen’s work on first impressions seems mediocre at best and on the cheap using any second hand movie prop, stock footage he could use. His ideas were brilliant and the emptiness of his sets gave me an unsettling feeling of some dystopia he envisioned humanity would be like in the 21st Century. The way things are going now with alleged depopulation and great reset ideology from Klaus Schwab, perhaps Irwin’s predictions shall manifest with Earth as a low populated Technocratic society with sexy women in retro 70’s miniskirts.
