Fun Fact: This song wasn't about tobacco, he is talking about the dreaded maryjane, doobies, acapulco gold, tea, wawa, smokey pokie, the pause, brite green flying carpet, the hidden door, gong, boowie....

The day Kevin Ayers died, I remember reading about it, while sitting in the lunch room at uni next to my friend (also called Kevin)... so in some sense, Kevin helped console me about Kevin's death... later that day we had an exam and I nailed it, and listened to Joy of a Toy afterwards

The Kevin Ayers catalog was a big part of my musical upbringing from Joy of the Toy onward. An eclectic mix of eccentric English songs almost like a musical trip through alice in wonderland with a ever so strange banana obsession!!!! I got to see him live in 1975 at the Astoria in London with Andy Summers & Zoot Money just before the punk thing kicked off & just about when Summers met Stingo & Copeland to do their pretend punk band. As a musician myself I recorded a cover version of May I for my brothers funeral as he was a big fan. Ayers songwriting was always very amusing and he even got quite poppy in his later material. He never quite broke out commercially partly, I think because he was so laid back himself. He was always surrounded by a group of very talented musicians from Oldfield, Summers, Coxhill, Bedford, Wyatt, Halsall etc. Whatevershebringswesing and Confessions of Dr Dream albums are stamped in my head from a young age. He was a one off with music full of vision and humour but possibly fuelled by the occasional substance, mainly red wine. A bit mad but a memorable talent. Too old to die young!

So lucky as a NZ colonial 2 hv seen Kev 1970 with Whole World band @ Roundhouse in Kent, great compo from trauma of cancelled Frank Zappa concert @ Royal Albert,London abt same time Nov 1970, all cos of ditty of day called Penis Dimensions. I know it was on that date, because the Frank Zappa ticket (cancelled to the Royal Albert Hall) was my 17th birthday present from Dad. But, as I say, Kevin was a perfectly good consolation,
I say to Kevin, for my consolation prize, Thank You, Very Much

Ah those sweet innocent days when we believed that everything would be wonderful if we could get the straights to smoke a bit of dope. Now living in a country where half the government has partaken, we find it really wasn't the key to the kingdom after all. Great song though.

Good ol' Olly could have gone the superstar ax-man route (I'm looking at you, Steve Vai!) but chose to do things apparently closer to his heart, like joining Kevin's band. God bless 'em both!

Wow this video was uploaded in 2006, crazy! This 1987 live version is a lot different from the 1971 studio version. This version is less psychedelicized and more bluesified. This version didn't feel totally right to me. This version feels kind of rushed or forced and the original is just mellow and chill. I still enjoyed this version though. Does anybody agree or disagree or have a different opinion?
    Thanks for uploading!

Loved the single with the wacky keyboard solos, but this live version rocks! Left-handed lead guitar players, playing a standard strung guitar, always seem to conjure up a certain magic!
