They're both a refreshing change from the usual RUclipsrs putting a 14900KS and a 4090 in every build for sure! I love seeing just how well older and/or lower-end tech can do. I was running an i7-2600 and a GTX 260 then 770 then 1070 for ages and it proved to me how much performance modern hardware has and how you don't need to drop $3k on a PC to have fun.
@@fallnight I have been GPU hopping for the past year. Started with an i5 4'th gen/gtx 1060, landed on my goal of i5 12600k/RX 6800XT about a year later from building and selling budget rigs on mercari (that's why I love these channels so much!) and the 6800XT died and I replaced it with an RX 3080 to mixed satisfaction. pretty disappointed with the RT performance, but I got it for $300 and it's a custom modified card cooled by an aio instead of the heatsink, fans and shroud that it came with. Happy with my Frame rate, upset with the 10GB of VRAM failing me in 4k RDR2 while my RX 6800XT handled it swimmingly. RT performance sucks. Can't get a 60 fps average in Elden at 1080p, let alone 1440p, with RT enabled even if I'm on the low preset for everything else. Will most likely never go NVIDIA again! I also can't see the difference between FSR and DLSS once I get to 1400p/4k. Both of them suck at 1080p anyway, so I can't see a reason to justify spending the premium on an NVIDIA card when AMD just seems to outclass them in every way since RT is just pretty much unusable unless you are on the 40 series anyway.
Would be a great upgrade for people who went with the 12100f budget build. Atleast from I'm from the AMD 5X00 cpus are around half the price more expensive with the 7X00 series being 2x-3x more expensive.
@@RandomGaminginHD I'll you, the 12100f is a phenomenal chip. If you aren't concerned with the extra cores, it performs almost frame for frame with the i5-12400f.
not just that, it's also the only thing that can hardware decode footage with 4:2:2 chroma which a many slightly more expensive cameras can record in. consumer nvidia or AMD GPUs just don't do that.
I’ve got a 12600kf. Decent cpu for sure. I paid $140 around Black Friday last year. A z690 board for about 100 and 32gb ddr4 for 50 bucks or so. I grabbed one of the Thermalright coolers he mentioned and it’s a great cooler. About 330 plus a case and ssd. Not bad really.
Have a bunch of Thermalright coolers cooling our 12400F, 12700KF, and 12900KF rigs. Were great B760M and Z690 deals last year on boards and DDR5 deals (probably should have went D4 to save but the boards cost the same at the time I acquired everything).
Me too. I ve taken by some daye my 12600kf, with msi mobo ddr5 and thermalright assassin cooler 5 pipes ( amazing cooler). My cpu on full load do not go over 60 degress!. Watching videos on youtube seems, this cpu is super hot, but it s not true! I think depends how good you put thermal paste on it and the quality of it. I used mx6. 12600kf is worth every penny over 12400f if you own anything stronger than rtx 4070/ 7800xt and 240hz screen for online shooters or games like Asseto Corsa comp. etc..
Solid CPU, Picked mine up last year $215, still see the deals around 200-215 USD. Granted 14700K(F) exist now around 400. But you can pair 12700KF with Z690. Used a B board before I upgraded mine. 12900KF is stronger than my 12700KF. But 13th/14th might be a better buy as improvements were made. We have a 12400F in the house for office/NAS. The price matters a lot you could make a reasonable cheap 12700KF for sales if they stack. A 13700K/14700K if you have the budget would be slightly better in how long it will last before wanting another upgrade for gaming.
@@chasethefeel Not the same (extra cache, cores and clocks), the 13700K is pretty much a better 12900K, 25% higher multithread perfomance vs the 12700K while pulling 60% more power. It's an overrated CPU.

Got this CPU for $74 at Micro Center today. They gave me discount because I ordered the CPU with certain DDR4 memory. I just returned the memory before I left the store because I had DDR4 memory already. Feels like I stole it. Got a Z690 mini itx mb and a i5 12600kf for $242 total, tax included. Super happy with my purchase.
My setup is also a i5-12600kf which I got last December for about $120 and a 4070 super but with 64gb of 3600mhz ram. Definitely a great cpu for rasterized games, in Raytracing it does though start to become a bigger bottleneck and below 60fps in some games like Darktide.
I prefer RT off when it's an option. I found Raytracing disappointing even with 12900KF 7900XTX in Avatar last December. Am sure it's also not good on my 12700KF 7800XT.
7500F was 107USD on Aliexpress anniversary promo, am5 is not the best budget friendly platform, but price performance ratio seems okay 100usd 2x16 6000cl30 120-150 decent b650 board
I'm still using a 6600k paired with a 1070 Mini from Galax, and the 12600kf is now a good CPU, because as you said, spending that money of a 13600kf on a better GPU, like a 4070 super or a 7900 XT. Very good review!
I will never again buy a CPU without an iGPU. Never. NEEEVEEEEEEER. It's not just for troubleshooting purposes, but the iGPU, at least Intel with quick sync, can help in video editing even when you use your dGPU for it. Still good video though. :)
@@xuimod I don't have specific numbers to give you. The overall experience is smoother, as long as the software supports quick sync of course. Even if you use an editor which supports GPU rendering, there is always some off loading to the quick sync. Now if you also do other things, say you are rending something with the GPU and say watching RUclips videos, this makes it smoother too.
Currently running the 9900k with arc a770. It does pretty decent. I can't utilize the arc controller because it needs a 12th gen or above. The 12600kf with a cheap DDR5 Z690 board and a quick overclock/ram-tune will blow past the 12900k at stock XMP and is a great low-cost option for those willing to tinker. Very attractive at this price!
Hey Steve! I need your help! I built a pc and when I launch a AAA game it gets too loud after 5 minutes of the launch. I disabled case fans, set silent profiles to CPU/GPU fans and nothing helped!
The problem I have with calling these 12 series and later "budget" or even "mid range", is that one must replace their entire platform just to get one of these chips running at all. Which means the rig is going to cost a lot more than building something from earlier generation platforms.
@@misterhoudi2824 you can check the cpu support list for your motherboard on the manufacturer's website. You might need to a BIOS update for your motherboard to support the 14th Generation i5.
I bought this cpu for my new Gaming PC Build in January. Currently paired with a GTX 1070 Ti but I will get a better gpu to be paired with this cpu soon.
Good comparison. I'd buy the 12600K (not the KF variant due to a lack of iGPU) and pair it with a good motherboard. H610 motherboards are like the AMD B series: they won't have the greatest feature set, won't run multiple sticks of RAM at their highest speed available, and in some cases won't even support 4 sticks of RAM at all. I'd also possibly get the i9 version of the stock cooler, on somewhere like eBay, because why not. And besides, the stock i9 cooler (for the 14900 non-K) would be far more suited to cooling this, rather than cooling the i9 it was intended to do. Of course, you could get a Z690 or Z790 board, get this chip, then upgrade to a 14900K or even 14900KS later on down the line.
saw the 12700kf at 199 a couple of times (2 or 3 weeks ago was at 199 but now came back to 250 or so), feel it would be a beter choice for 30 or 40dls more, especially for those 8 real strong cores, some games were having problems with e cores and having those extra 2 could help later on...
I have i5 13600kf. Would anyone here know why intel xtu speed optimizer overclock option gets grayed out and says doesn't support xtu 2.0. It worked for me a month ago but there was an update and now it gives me that message I mentioned above and doesn't work.
People often discount the e-cores on these chips, but they're pretty darn good. Sure, they're close to like a zen + part, but that still means you have a ryzen 3 2100 glued onto your Ryzen 5 7600 equivalent The i5-12600 gets a thumbsup at the right price
The 12400F overclocked to 5ghz+ offers similar performance but if the 12600kf does drop down to less than 160$ it could make a decent buy/upgrade especially for productivity… the 12600 is still well over 200$ here and the 12400 can be had for less than 140$Cad
Ryzen 7 7700 = $291 on Newegg today Ryzen 5 7600 = $199 on Newegg today Intel i5 12600kf = $159 on Newegg today All three very similar gaming performance, i5 basically in the middle.
Good video but I have questions. Was this 12600K tested the way a K CPU should be? What I mean is, was all that garbage power saving stuff turned off? C states, speedshift, thermal monitor, speedstep and whatever else they've invented? To me, buying a K cpu while leaving all that garbage on defeats the purpose. Unless something has changed since I had a K series cpu (have the 12400f now) then you should be able to get full speeds out of that K cpu with all the power saving garbage off? I ask because I'm not impressed by the performance jump compared to my 12400f and the price difference between these CPUs in the past has easily been $100 or more and that performance difference in gaming was laughable for that price difference.
My 24/7 o/c is Pcore 5.0 and Ecore 4.0 on all cores. It can do 5.3 all cores but then I have to downclock RAM from cl16 DDR4 3600 to 3500 due to ring clock. I'm running it on a Z790 that I got a good deal on refurbished. I purposely bought older gen for this new build due to bang for buck. My 12600KF was $140 pre black friday in the states.
12600 seems to be the better performing for more fps and clock speed than the 12400 to save $10-$15 usd spend the extra for smoother gaming with better system latency and a higher fps is in some titles good review earned my sub
I am still using a 8700k CPU and it runs every game I throw at it perfectly on 1440p. 60 fps and above with a AMD 6700XT GPU No need to upgrade still. They are a good buy now if you want to save money to spend more on a GPU.
I was looking for a CPU upgrade but I already have an i5 12400f on a b660 msi mag motherboard so I think I need to go a bit higher to get a good fps increase, pairing with a 7900 xtx btw.
You can BIOS flash for 14th gen also an option if you want to drop an 13th/14th gen into that board to upgrade. My 12400F is paired with a 3060 12gb. My 12900KF is paired with a 7900XTX, 12700KF with a 7800XT. If you play highly cpu bound games you might notice a difference in upgrading cpus. My 12700KF can't raid and discord without microstuttering when I heal the floor during raid. Your B board does limit the TDP on the CPU, some performance loss if paired with a K chip, not huge. I did test 12700KF with 7900XTX also. I play 1440P but your resolution/use case will also be something to think about. I might pick up a 14700K for one of my rigs to upgrade. Casual gaming I found 12700KF fine really just a shame every time I have to consider upgrading again.
Honestly, I went with the dead platform. I don’t plan on upgrading my mobo(ASROCK Z690), my RAM(32GB DDR4 3600), and obviously my i5-12600KF for at least 3-5 years. I have a RX 6700 XT I plan on upgrading within a year. However, when I do upgrade my CPU, it will likely be the newest gen AMD CPU.
Bro LGA1700 isn't dead no more CPUs are getting made for it, but you can still always upgrade to a better CPU if you didn't buy the newest LGA1700 CPU.
@@johnnydied9563 By dead, I meant no more brand new ones. But, I do see your point. Regardless, I doubt I will upgrade my i5-12600KF with another LGA1700 CPU when their will be much much better options from both Intel and AMD.
It's crazy how people buy the latest stuff without even waiting an year to see if it has any defects and for the prices to drop, and then 2 years later QQ about the big price drop LOL
@@chovekb Yeah I probably should have went for am4 but Intel works better for what I wanted, a gaming capable cpu with a lot of cores and high speeds for virtualization and general tasks.
That was actually my choice for my current build, but those would go out of stock fast when on sale! So I ended up with a 12400 and an extra cooler instead.
Get a 13400f/14400f over the 12600kf. Very similar performance only with a slightly higher price. Your temps and power usage will be much lower too (I say 13/14400f since they’re the same price rn in my region)
I think if you are getting a motherboard as well it's a much better idea to go with an am5 cpu. Considering how long am4 has been around and they're still making new am4 chips, you're much more likely to have an easier time if you decide to upgrade in the future
Dude, before I've seen your video, I came to the very same conclusions. A 5700X + a decent B550 + 32Gb DDR4 ram is still more expensive here (Brazil) than a 12600KF + B660 with the same ram. While the 12600KF delivers much better performance than the 5700X, there is room for a future 14th gen upgrade, as the 14700. In reality, the 12600KF is closer to a Ryzen 7600, even with DDR4, while its mobo+ram bundle costs around 150usd less than the 5700x bundle... so, in this scenario, Intel was the best choice for me.
I know this video is old but I'm trying to upgrade from a i3 12100f and the i5 12600kf is $345 here in New Zealand, I love building/upgrading PC's its my hobby but being a PC gamer in NZ is actually pure pain ill probably be stuck with this i3 for a while.. also stuck with a RX 6600 because anything better is $1000+
Just got this cpu and ready for my first build, pairing it up with z790 tomahawk wifi MB and a 2nd hand 2080 super ,ore upgrade than newbuild tbh. Whats your thoughts or anyone in comments.
Z790 has better memory support assuming DDR5 speeds, Z690 I patched them for 14th but ending up shuffling around the computer ram kits so each is QVL now, that seems to be good. I've spent more time than I cared to tuning DDR5 on B760M & Z690 boards, I start with 4800 supported speed for 12th gen and try XMP on/tune the memory on each machine, 5600-6000 seems to work most times. Sounds like a solid build. There is more performance in Z board pairing with K chip, not limiting the wattage to the CPU (as a B board does). I've used the 12700KF and 12900KF is my main still (might upgrade a machine to a 14700K). You can always upgrade the GPU later if you feel the need. Pairings I have B760M with 12400F 3060 12gb, 12700KF with 7800XT, 12900KF 7900XTX. Upgrading from a 9600K originally to a 12700K it was noticeable how much more snappy the desktop and game felt, 1440P didn't stutter. Only gripe I have 1440P 12700KF has some raid microstutter that the 12900KF doesn't. But it games fine outside of that highly CPU bound scenario. P cores E cores has been a great experience, I was worried about it coming from the 6 core 9600K with game compatibility and whatnot. I actually found with 12700KF & 12900KF some games I have to cap frames.
Wow I am looking at this CPU at the moment. I currently have a AMD Ryzen 7 2700x with a x470 MSI gaming pro motherboard. Depends where You live, but in here can buy (in stock) Gembird huracan x500 cooler for like 25 eur. Nothing comes close even on noticeably more expensive range :)
Quick question I have an i5 3470 , 8 GB of RAM , GTX 1050 ti and I feel some bottleneck here and there but my question is, does upgrading my CPU to i7 4790 would make a difference or it's not worth upgrading?
I don't get the value of this. Note: I'm in Australia so prices may differ greatly. I'd be looking more at the i7-12700kf or other variants. Even if the performance isn't needed it's way easier to sell when you decide to upgrade. I actually ended up getting an i5-14600k instead, just to be on current gen and the price was quite competitive. Cheers!

Question/advice currently running a 12100f 1440p. Not overly worried about frame rate. Because of the pretty low price of said 12600KF would it be worth the upgrade? Possibly to benefit future gpus currently have a 3060ti. I’m in 2 minds
Been looking at a i5 14500 to replace my R5 3600, myself. No idea why, as I don't do anything CPU intensive outside of Football Manager. I think it's just my "new computer every 4-5 years" mindset kicking in.
Generally speaking, if you have a decent cpu you can get closer to 6 or 7 years before you’ll notice a difference. I’d also recommend looking into a 5800x3d and keeping your same motherboard and ram, that thing is a beast

@@alexanders.4591 The 7800 xt has been amazing. If you're looking at playing at 1440p or 4k its perfect. Just with the 12400f at 1080p the 7800 xt does not get fully utilized

ugh. I both love and hate this hobby so much.
I paid $225 for mine like 6 months ago -___- I just couldn't wait, I had been dying to play Zelda TOTK on yuzu at a decent frame rate, and my i3-12100f just couldn't give me above 40. I got it on sale at best buy for around $225.
EDIT: I got the non f variant as I like to use a quad monitor set up (I'm silly, I know) and I like to use my integrated GPU for my side monitors.
Agreed and IMO Iceberg is criminally underrated
That's nice to hear, what is your GPU ?
They're both a refreshing change from the usual RUclipsrs putting a 14900KS and a 4090 in every build for sure! I love seeing just how well older and/or lower-end tech can do. I was running an i7-2600 and a GTX 260 then 770 then 1070 for ages and it proved to me how much performance modern hardware has and how you don't need to drop $3k on a PC to have fun.
Iceburg has good coverage on the old x99 platform
Yeah nice performance boost from the 12100f for sure, though that is still very impressive considering it’s a quad core
@@RandomGaminginHD I'll you, the 12100f is a phenomenal chip. If you aren't concerned with the extra cores, it performs almost frame for frame with the i5-12400f.

I have the same system. 12600 KF with 32 gigs of DDR5 RAM and 4070 Super.

not just that, it's also the only thing that can hardware decode footage with 4:2:2 chroma which a many slightly more expensive cameras can record in. consumer nvidia or AMD GPUs just don't do that.

I used mx6. The price matters a lot you could make a reasonable cheap 12700KF for sales if they stack.

The problem I have with calling these 12 series and later "budget" or even "mid range", is that one must replace their entire platform just to get one of these chips running at all. Which means the rig is going to cost a lot more than building something from earlier generation platforms.

FINALLY, someone is talking about the i5-12600KF. I'd say this CPU is offering better value than anything AMD is offering in same price range.

Get a 13400f/14400f over the 12600kf. Very similar performance only with a slightly higher price. Your temps and power usage will be much lower too (I say 13/14400f since they’re the same price rn in my region)
I have the i5 11600kf paired with a 3060ti.
@@dianaalyssa8726 Fantastic reply TY so much for this, appreciated .
Wow I am looking at this CPU at the moment. I currently have a AMD Ryzen 7 2700x with a x470 MSI gaming pro motherboard.
I could just buy a 5000 Ryzen cpu however i have seen 400 amd chipset motherboards fail after a time with the bios updates and the 500 chipsets being much more reliable in those last am4 cpu's.
Going wild in the aisles in Starfield.
😁
How does it compare with the i5 12400f?
Love that cpu, currently using it
Depends where You live, but in here can buy (in stock) Gembird huracan x500 cooler for like 25 eur.
Nothing comes close even on noticeably more expensive range :)
Quick question
I have an i5 3470 , 8 GB of RAM , GTX 1050 ti and I feel some bottleneck here and there
but my question is, does upgrading my CPU to i7 4790 would make a difference or it's not worth upgrading?
I don't get the value of this. Note: I'm in Australia so prices may differ greatly.
I'd be looking more at the i7-12700kf or other variants. Even if the performance isn't needed it's way easier to sell when you decide to upgrade.
I actually ended up getting an i5-14600k instead, just to be on current gen and the price was quite competitive. Cheers!
I have the 12600k do you think it pairs well with the 4080 with bottlenecking the gpu
i5 12600K & RX 7700XT here. Perfect Combo for me
Yes. I Have 12600kf and rx 6800 :D
hi, i want to make a build with the same combo, it is good so far?
@@berserker393 Yes. For me best value combo. Ryzen 5600 good to
@@berserker393 its perfect. But the i5 12600k only makes sense if you can get it cheaply.
You should check out the Ryzen 3500X. 6 Core 6 thread Chinese exclusive version of the r5 3600. Not a 3600g with a broken gpu so it has the full cache of the 3600x
I'm still happy with what I paid for my Ryzen 7 5700G, £90 was a bargain in my eyes, great cpu :)
Question: For 1080p 60fps, should I rather go with 12400f or 12600kf paired with my RTX 3060 12gb? Can't really decide between those two(as well as Ryzen 7 5700x, but that's another dillema).
You have a bunch upgrade options on your AM4 platform, Why change everything? But obviously the new computer mindset playing a part here lol
@@Dag242Films The motherboard seems a bit problematic(certain BIOS options, such as virtualisation will cause blue screens every hour or so, and yes, the BIOS is up to date, really hurts for emulating old games from when I was a teenager), and I like the idea of having e-cores for background tasks, as well as DDR5 RAM.
@@mozzjones6943 It's literally turning on virtualisation in the BIOS causes my computer to blue screen every hour, once I turn it off it stops.
Plus, the main issue(for some reason I forgot) is that the board only has 1 NVMe socket and I'd long(I mean 2 years here) run out of space on my C: drive and everything is being thrown onto SATA drives, which are also getting increasingly full. I do have a free PCIe socket to plug an extra SATA controller and enough power cables to handle it, but that sounds like a cable management nightmare.
What should i pair with rx 6800 for 1440p?
What mobo fto choose? B760 msi p dd4 d4 asus prime b660 plus d4 or asrock b760 pro rs d4
I have a MSI B660M-P motherboard, bought it by mistake instead of the B660M-A. Currently using it with a 12100F but I'm looking to upgrade soon. Do you think the motherboard could handle the 12600KF or 13400F?
hello bro can i ask ? Can i pair i5 12600kf with rtx 4070 for blender sculpting and animation . somtimes AAA games . is it good combo ? i played on 1080p only :( and i dont really count fps . everything above 80 is perfectly fine to me even 6-70fps wont bother me . Thank you !!!
Really enjoy the content. Keep up the good work. Any recommendations for building a mid range gaming pc for 1080/1440p. I usually go AMD but open to suggestions.
have this cpu, it's GOATed
There's a Ryzen out there somewhere doing equivalent performance with less electric bill impact. Probably considerably cheaper too.
12gen is good, only when it's slurping absurd energy use.
Source: computer scattered throughout our house, and the electric bill.
edit - not to mention countering cooling the place in the summer.. toasters.
