      Old school here. She was paying homage to Nina Hagen in the early 80s. Lets not forget that Madonna made a career of borrowing from other scenes and subcultures. Ya looks like 90's madonna but Nina Hagen was the original and did it far better thn Madonna - a true original w/thin the goth culture. So, yes that look def deserves to be part of this video. Nina is after all the mother of punk.

    • @helline9
      @helline9 3 года назад +6

      As I understand that Steampunk came from Cyberpunk. cybergoth was the mixing of Goth styles and Cyberpunk styles.
      Point is that Steampunk didn't originate from Goth at all and even though a lot of clothing features may cross over (top hats, big ruffle skirts etc) they are two very separate and distinct styles with no shared origin.

    • @piratekid8099

      I dunno, in the US (maybe just some cities), there are a lot of ladies that are typically goth in their day-to-day but then also do pin-up on the side and so that why you see a lot of pin-up girls with very heavy tattoos. They are definitely on the Goth tree, but perhaps by marriage.

      Pastel goth has been around for awhile (a little longer than the 2010s), at least, in San Francisco, since the mid or late 90s. Except then we called it "perkigoth" or "candy goth." Some people in the goth community would even overlap styles. I had a friend who was a deathrocker, but wore quite a bit of pink with pastel-colored hair--much like the pastel goth in the video.
      It's funny. We used to mock the uniformity-code of goth, too. Instead, we valued creativity and uniqueness over conformity.

    I am posting this at the request of your newest fan. Her name is Avalon and she is 6 years old. Even though I am not Goth or into the culture, I let her watch most of your videos because of your lovely personality and the fact that she needs to see that people should never be judged by their looks, just their actions.
    So here is Avalon's comments/questions for you -
    "You are very pretty, a nice person and you look fabulous. Do you like Monster High? I would really like to have hair and eyes like yours and I like your outfit. I also like watching your videos (the ones my mom let's me watch). Have a great day, you are awesone."

      +Secret Agent Starlady If my daughter wanted to dress like Black Friday, I'm ok with that. She knows that certain things such as makeup and piercings will have to wait until she is much older. I tell her that as long as it's "classy", it's ok to wear. By classy, I mean nothing above the knee or below the collar bone. At six, she has no qualms about by telling teen-agers in short-shorts and little tank tops that they don't look classy....
      She already wears black & pink wigs, Gothic style dresses and has developed the "homeless princess" look that most six year olds have to make it her own. I want her to be confident in whatever style she is drawn to. Just because I don't wear it, doesn't mean I can't let her wear it.

      I'm not sure about Nu-goth, i started getting into it (especially restyle's clothing, i think they can be considered nu-goth) and i quite like it, it's modern, simple and COMFORTABLE, i made a wardrobe that looks goth but also very comfortable everyday wear and turned out i started dressing nu-goth without knowing what it is), i found corsets, straps etc quite annoying so in that sense i think it has its place and while it will probably change i think it has a place in goth fashion.

    • @valeriaswanne
      @valeriaswanne 5 лет назад +4

      I like to think now that all the satanic ritual panic from the 90s has died down, everyone is able to finally wear it again freely. You don't have to worry about getting asked to leave places anymore based on how much black you are wearing. Nu Goth is pretty comfy and low maintenance compared to Lolita or Romantic. I'm looking forward to trying a pastel lolita look for the first time. I figure one outfit that isn't black won't be the end of anything so I want to wear white to a concert.

    I think goth is a lot like punk where it's just your own style whatever you make it to be. People are always arguing over what "real punk" or "real goth" is and I've been off and on since the 80s but always loving the music. There's just something poetic about the flat voice in the background and instruments that bring me back every time. Having a corporate job I had to dress like a normal person for years and now I'm so glad that is over with.

      Of course everyone should wear whatever they want and mix styles. But, they shouldn't call their fashion a certain thing when it isn't what they call it at all. For example sure, wear the "deathrock" look from the video, but don't call it deathrock, call it a Nina Hagen inspired look, you know ?

    I am a goth on days I feel like it. I like different cultures different stuff, like a variety of music, fashion, movies, and dances. I believe differences should bring people together, not separate them. Here in America, differences separates them even though it's supposed to be "the land of the free." I want to travel the world someday. Unless most of other Americans, I want to learn about different people. I feel boxed in to what I know just about where I live.

    I wish people would stop hating on Pastel Goth. If you don't like it, that's fine, you don't have to. But don't go around saying it isn't real goth or its just tumblrism etc etc. The very worst thing about the goth subculture is the ELITISM and we'd all be better of loving and supporting each other rather than going around all "gothier than thou" and dismissing other peoples' styles and interpretations of goth. Live and let live; support each other, don't put each other down. 💖

      Post punk came out the bat cave scene
      Bands like Christian death came from the deathrock LA scene
      Emily Autum is associate with steampunk
      Siousxie Sioux goes along with the punk aspect
      Point is goth somehow always correlates with music, that's where the fashion came from. Pastel goth is literally a product of tumblr, there is no correlation, it isn't goth, the end.

      The only problem I have with it is that it was called "creepy cute" until someone decided to stick on the "goth" label without much thought about it. Dark elements alone don't make it goth, and many of the ones who were into this creepy cute fashion were never goth to begin with, they were just people who liked cute and creepy things mixed together, they had no association with goth whatsoever.

    I love Black Friday because she gives fair reviews. I get really annoyed when people are too judgmental or harsh on styles just because they aren't their own style. I personally don't think pastel or Nu goth will burn out though. I mean maybe Nu goth will change names but pastel goth has become it's own thing. And, in the end, all styles of goth started as a trend. Regardless, I think she made a lot of good points.

      I don't wear it a lot, but I love it, too. It gets a lot of shit for being too "Tumblr" somehow I guess, but I think it's just because it's associated with young women/teen girls, and almost everything in culture associated with them gets shit.
      I always find it ironic when people who are members of a nonconformist subculture try to judge other people for not being "enough" into that subculture for their personal arbitrary standards. As if the whole point wasn't experimenting and being creative and most of all being yourself XD.

      It definitely gets a lot of hate for being a "tumblr" thing. I personally think it's a really cool style, a nice balance of cute and creepy.
      The thing that annoys me with the hate it gets, is that most everyone will agree that goth is a lot more than just how someone dresses. It's a lifestyle. Music, books, interests, etc. are all aspects of being goth, so why is it that if someone has all the same interests and such as a more traditional goth, but just prefers to dress in a different way, they're automatically "not goth."
      I get that yes there are people who take on the pastel goth style without knowing the history of the gothic subculture and having other interests, but I'm sure you could find people in any goth style like that.
      I agree with the others, there's too much hate against goths (and other various subcultures) to hate on each other so much. Everyone is just trying to express themselves. Let's encourage and support each other, not tear each other down for "not being ____ enough."

    The Goth Lolita was terrible. The makeup, just no. The wig was okay, I guess, but I feel like it didn't fit the coordinate. And a Lolita tries to hide her petticoat at all times because it is considered an undergarment. We don't really like to flash them.

    As a Lolita, it's so painful to see. That is nothing like Lolita. The dress didn't have any details, what's with the petticoat? You shouldn't show it and it shouldn't be another colour. There wasn't much jewellery. No one wears gloves like that. And the make up and wig was horrifying. It's looks like they used one of those slutty Halloween costumes as a reference.

      Hi! ^^ (Sorry if its weird to comment this late ^^') But I also think that the Lolita was off. I have the feeling that the dress had a different shape than the petti, you know? Like, the dress was cupcake/bell shaped but the petti looked like an A-line to me... It just looked wrong and it threw me off :P I also think that the makeup could have been Mana inspired, but then the dress would *not* be mana like (at least from what he would have worn when he did his makeup like that, similar make up but wrong millennia compared to the dress ^^') Also, sorry for any errors! English is not my first language :P

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence 7 лет назад +15

      Psychobilly was the punk love child of Rockabilly. It's pretty much Punk and Rockabilly combined. There is "Gothabilly" but it's a VERY rare style.

    • @laney2796
      @laney2796 7 лет назад

      Kai_Decadence I guess we use the terms differently here. we have punkabilly which is what it sounds like. then psychobilly which is like horror movie lyrics meets rockabilly (which is what I see in the video) I've never heard of gothabilly but I'd prolly like it lol.

    • @KaiDecadence

      Punkabilly? See, I never heard that term before lol Maybe Psychobilly & Punkabilly are interchangeable? I don't know... I guess "billy" has more offshoots lol
      Like I said, Gothabilly is a VERY rare stye. Some Gothabilly bands include GhoulTown, Cult of the Psycho Fetus, and Bobby Joe Thorazine. The problem with this genre though is if you try to look for the music, you tend to find way too many Psychobilly bands being lumped into it. It kinda makes it kinda pointless to have a name like "Gothabilly" but yeah, those were the only bands I can think of that mixed Goth rock with Rockabilly/Punk.

    • @laney2796

    I'm a "Death Rocker." I have a 90's grunge look (torn jeans, tank top, flannel, sloppy hair, heavy eyeliner, tattoos.) Then again, sometimes I like a more "Bohemian" look. I kind of flip-flop between them and often fuse the two. :) But whatever their interpretation was there, it was odd to me. Looked more high-fashion and I gotta wonder who the ffffflippity-skip chose that look. It was cute, but certainly FAR from what most death metal girls look like. Key ingredient to DEATH METAL folk: Have headbangable hair. ;) And that outfit they chose, would never survive a moshpit. LOL!

    We very ancient Goths remember the days when Goths were swashbucklers and pirates and women wore flamboyant capes and scarves and the clothes were rich jewel tones, velvet, leather, lace. The true Goth days. We were called Gothic because our aesthetics were to fashion what Notre Dame and other grand gothic cathedrals are are to architecture...This apparently has died and been forgotten. At least according to "40 years of goth style" (which has not earned the right to be in upper case)....Steam Punk is more closely related to the roots of "Gothic" than any other mutation that has existed.

    The blonde/platnum death rock look was a thing, believe it or not. Very early 80's. They really got the 2 toned shades of it really well. I was impressed. Neon colors, too. At that time people weren't used to those bright colors. They showed up well under black lights in the clubs. They were usually worn with torn black clothing held together with safety pins. Safety pins for earrings were also great accessories.

    Personally we didn't do a reaction video because of any bandwagon. We did it because our subscribers asked us to. I personally base the subject matter on my channel on a combination of my intrests and my subscribers interests.

    It is like you say, Goth Fashion it like a tree with many branches. The video wasn't meant to be linear, but rather to show about when each style started branching off from the main "trunk". I still see people at goth clubs (and even Anime and Comic conventions!) dressed in all the different styles, from the "Punk" and "Cyber", to the more "traditional black", and the "Steampunk". It is all about what make you enjoy the culture as a whole.

    I grew up in the Hollywood goth scene, and they totally missed the boat on the most of these.
    I'm glad you talked about the different "branches." Ones I would have liked to have seen:
    1. Victorian Goth - As the name suggests, the Victorian-inspired goth look. We didn't have a lot of them in SoCal.
    2. Velvet Goth - This was bigger in Orange County in the richer areas, and was all about crushed velvet and saturated jewel tones.
    3. PVC Goth (huge in Hollywood in the 90s). These were the ones we call Cybergoths.
    4. Death Rock - I don't know about anyone else, but the Death Rocker I am familiar with was just punk fashion in black with a lot of ripped jeans and (on occasion) black flannel, combat boots, and black fatigues (sometimes the black and white camouglage pants). Unlike some videos, most of us a) didn't have Robert Smith hair, and b) most of us went with this look because we were too broke for the rest.
    5. Lolita Goth is something new to me; we just called them Baby Goths. Or, more insultingly, Goth-In-A-Box because they shopped at Hot Topic.
    6. Gothabilly should be in this video, but they bungled it.
    7. Nu-Goth is actually kind of cool in its look, but strikes me as too Hot Topic and therefore falls into what I consider Baby Goth.
    8. What they called Cyber Goth we simply referred to as Club Kids. The ones that showed up at Helter Skelter and Perversion could barely move because they had monstrous elevator platform boots.
    9. Corporate Goth would have been cool to see, especially since I'm now (whimper) old and professional, and going gray, more in this category.
    10. Lingerie Goth - Always my favorite for the ladies, and as the name implies was largely lingerie under punk rockish/Madonna-esque rags.
    11. Vampire Goths - We just referred to the ladies in this category as Morticias.
    12. Industrial Goths - Rivethead fashion, gothic makeup.
    13. Emo - though we made fun of them and considered them on the fringe of the scene (even more than the Baby Goths), they were just grunge kids who dyed everything black with Rit dye.
    Those were the big ones I saw the most of, until I moved around the country. Edwardian Goths seemed to be more of an East Coast thing, and Victorian Goths more of a Southern thing.

    Where's the bondage straps over the pastel outfit? The outfit wasn't enough to push it back from the edge of modern prep.

    • @Perceptionreflection
      @Perceptionreflection 8 лет назад +22

      By modern prep I mean it's basically normal fashion with colorful hair. The pastel aesthetic involves not only bondage harnesses but stockings, hair accessories and a heavy emphasis on nail art. Shame they didn't browse more than one outfit post before building the look. The detail is what sets it apart.

      Industrial is more military/dystopian style.

      A lot of it looks like uniforms

    • @Spooky_Biscuits

      Sir Cotton, Esquire, Cyber goth exist in the industrial realm and associate with that music style/presence, but actual industrial style is closer associated with rivethead.
      I think of cyber goth as the colorful sci-fi cousin of rivethead/industrial

    It's kind of funny/interesting to look at Nu Goth and see it called Witch Goth because the pagan symbolism has always been there in punk, metal, goth, glam and folk music/fashion. It's not new at all but hey...I'll take it. The more pentagrams the better!

    • @DepecheModeLove
      @DepecheModeLove 8 лет назад +1

      +SdisticDrummer it's not similar to Nugoth at all. it's a very witchy. Very layered . look up Mai magi on fb as well as Psyhcara. they are very good examples of Strega goth.

    • @DepecheModeLove
      @DepecheModeLove 8 лет назад +2

      +SdisticDrummer Nugoth is kind of witchy. However it's very form-fitting and very keen on using satanic and witchy kind of symbols on the Forefront which kind of can look like it's doing it for the purpose of shock Factor. strega is more flowy and less keen on the in your face pagan symbols.

    I am in my 50s now and grew up with 80s goth, a lot of clubs and bars in the UK that goths frequently attended also had punks, metal heads and psychobillies, all kind of smushed in together, maybe that's where some of the crossovers and misconceptions come from, lots of goths like me had friends who listened to the cramps, and spear of destiny which were psychoBilly bands, I quite liked some of it myself and still do, I think 'cause we all hung out together and shopped for a lot of our clothes and record etc in the same place, elder goths accept these other groups as part of the same scene. Maybe the person who made the vid is older like me, they do seem to have a better understanding of the vintage side of the culture, than the modern distinctions.

      I guess the person who came up with it couldn't leave the pastel colors behind .-.
