Or at least "disturbed I hate myself for being aroused this is so wrong stop this..."
So yeah, finding this legit sexy is a red flag.

We just thought it'd a be a interesting sci fi flick and we always went to the movies growing up. I'm a dude and was in my early 20's at the time. It was pretty awkward after the movie and to this day we never talked about it. It was the last time we saw a movie together. She's still alive, we just don't do that anymore. Thanks, Splice for making things weird for me and my estranged mom with your weird double incest.

      @@dnw009 obviously, one can.
one can do horror with a high level of violence. One can do horror where no violence occurs. One can do horror where none dies, and one can do horror where most of humanity is wiped out at the end... one can do horror without a hint of sex, and one can do horror all focused on sexual violence, be it metaphorically (alien) or in plain text.
I agree that presenting sexual violence in a direct way is very tricky to do in a way that doesn't feel exploitative... which is why most horror on the topic tends to rely on metaphor instead of having rape as an explicit part of the narrative. Nonetheless I think boundary pushing is vital to creation, even if the experiment doesn't completely succeed.

I'd find it horrible if I was suddenly pregnant, I can see why someone who would want to get pregnant would find it horrible if her uterus just walked away. Weirdly enough, I thought it's a nice horror about a creature who escaped the lab at first. The design of the child creature was adorable as heck, and the adult was disturbing... But then I found out what ACTUALLY happened in the movie and.. Yeaah...

  • @KugelBlitz0

I remember seeing the movie when it came out in theaters. I thought it was more silly than disturbing, mostly due to the acting and general plot (and also being an edgy "I'm too cool to be disturbed" teenager at the time).
However, my impression of what the director wanted was probably him trying to show how depraved humans can become in their quest for discovery. They threw away all moral boundaries but they also succumbed to blind desire, whether it be scientific or carnal lust. In a way, he achieved that. But, at the same time, his method came off as gratuitous rather than meaningful.

Ngl the movie had me at first because I’m a sucker for sci fi hybrid shit, and I saw Dren’s design before actually watching, and she looked cool. But oh boy. Oh boy...
There’s a specific scene in the movie where the two scientists have sex, and Dren is watching, and the dude is watching HER. I knew what was coming. But knowing did not prepare me for it. And the ending was genuinely awful for me to watch. Especially considering how the way it was all framed, especially the sex scenes, it makes it feel like SOMEONE behind the scenes had a kink for this.
