  • The Supreme Court has ruled 6 to 3 along ideological lines in favor of a Christian Colorado web designer who refused to create websites for same-sex couples even though the state bans such discrimination. "We're entering into a terrible moment where a Pandora's box has been opened," says president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, who warns "permission has been granted to use religion as a way to discriminate against your fellow people." Raushenbush discusses the use of Christianity to advance discrimination, the importance of the Respect for Marriage Act, and what this decision could mean for other groups. "It's just bad for religion, it's bad for freedom, and it's bad for America," he says.

They started by lying (like any religion always does) "slightly" about the facts of the case in the "coach prays publicly inviting his players and others during beginning/middle of public school games in the middle of field" saying he was just doing it out in the parking lot by himself with no call-out.

@@keksterbojester818 If it WERE a private enterprise, but it is not. It is a public enterprise owned privately and accepting "socialist" bankruptcy and "socialist" patent/copy-right laws. Businesses and the rich lie too much, just like religion. There is no constitutional protection against decreased government funding if you refuse vaccines. So stop lying to yourself and others, like religion does. As one example of YOUR point, Oral Robets school is fully private religious school and is allowed to discriminate ON ANY issue. They receive no government funding or bankruptcy "government insurance," or patent/copy-right protections. Many people make the same mistake, especially in the US. Freedom of religion is the right to practice your beliefs as you prefer and inside some given limits, not to dictate to others how they should live their lives.

But isn't telling someone they have to do business in a way that violates their values, telling them "how to live their lives"? And it especially seems to be egregious to require it of private businesses. Look, as a vegetarian (and in many other regards), I would not want to be required by the government to do business with meatpackers, hunters, or ranchers.

    • @lolitaras22

@@C.E.V.One of the fundamental principles of Western democracies is the protection of equal rights for all citizens, including their sexual orientation. Discrimination is considered unjust and incompatible with the principles of equality and human dignity. By enforcing anti-discrimination laws in businesses, we ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in the economic and social fabric of society.
Separation of state and religion is a crucial aspect of Western culture, designed to protect the freedom of individuals to practice their religion without interference from the government. However, this separation does not extend to granting businesses the right to impose their religious beliefs on others. Allowing businesses to discriminate against certain customers based on their beliefs would be a violation of the religious neutrality in the public sphere.
Allowing businesses to discriminate based on personal beliefs would create a fragmented society, fostering division and animosity. A cohesive society requires a level playing field, where businesses provide goods and services to all customers without discrimination. Upholding secular laws in business interactions helps maintain social harmony by ensuring fair and equal treatment for everyone..
Granting businesses the right to discriminate based on personal beliefs could set a dangerous precedent. If we allow businesses to deny services to certain groups based on their beliefs, it opens the door for discrimination against other groups based on religion, race, or any other characteristic. This undermines the core values of a diverse and inclusive society and can lead to marginalization and prejudice.
In a pluralistic society, there are often conflicts between different rights and interests. While individuals have the right to their religious beliefs, those beliefs should not infringe upon the rights and dignity of others. In cases where there is a conflict, the state must strike a balance by protecting the rights and interests of all parties involved. In the context of business, this means ensuring that no customer faces discrimination or unequal treatment.

    • @C.E.V.
      @C.E.V. 10 месяцев назад

      @@lolitaras22 Something to think about.
Although the "discrimination and unequal treatment" is merely about choosing who to do business with, and does not allow a business to set different prices for different people, for example.
There must be something that matters so much to you that being forced to act against it would violate your beliefs. The climate crisis, and having to do extensive business with fossil fuel companies? Having to do business in the mass production and sale of MAGA hats? I don't know what your values are, but just think how sickened you would feel if you were required by the government to take on and complete the job. That seems wholly wrong too. Is there no middle ground, where all parties are respected?

      @@C.E.V.
I think you may have gotten a little bit carried away here. Discrimination in this context is based on protected classes and immutable characteristics, like sexual orientation, religion, race, etc. Your hypothetical about being forced to do business with fossil fuel companies or MAGA hat manufacturers just doesn't apply at all since those aren't immutable characteristics nor are they protected classes.
Would you make the same argument in defense of this ruling if instead of a gay couple getting married, it was an interracial couple, or a Jewish couple? Certainly it's possible that this business owner might feel just as strongly against doing work for a Jewish couple's wedding as she does against a gay couple's wedding? Both are discrimination and both are in violation of the principles of our long-standing public accommodations laws.

Many who Bible pound, haven't had a class in biology or studied the history of the subject. In the early 1900s the wording was changed in the Bible to make the subject practice a sin. The original Greek meaning described rape as sin, not homosexuality. I guess God changed his mind 1900 years after the Bible was written or some committee changed it. Since God doesn't actually write, it most certainly was the latter.

The Christian Bible condemns homosexuality as an immoral and unnatural sin. Leviticus 18:22 identifies homosexual sex as an abomination, a detestable sin. Romans 1:26-27 declares homosexual desires and actions to be “shameful” and “unnatural.” First Corinthians 6:9 states that homosexuals are “wrongdoers” who will not inherit the kingdom of God. What did it mean in the original Hebrew/Koine Greek exactly? Regardless, it’s still just shit people made up so it doesn’t really matter, but to people who do think it’s God’s words it’s probably be helpful to show them how the Old and New Testament books text originated, with Koine Greek for the 4 gospels (Mark, John, Luke,
Matthew) written 30-100 years after Jesus’ death (likely no earlier than 60-70 years after Jesus died which then implies that it wasn’t written by the actual original witnesses but rather through telephone game stories which explain the disparities psrtocudrly between John and the rest but also Mark and Luke and Matthew and even the more overlapping but still incongruent to some degree and self-contradicting Luke and Matthew, but it’s unclear, with Mark written first) and that the 4 gospels to varying degrees don’t accord with one another and to some degree contradict one another which I would think would create a serious problem for anyone with an absolute/literal interpretation of the Bible that so many in the US seem to profess having despite not knowing Jack shit about the Bible other than a few quotes their likely stupid pastor and online life has led them to, not that you can’t find some good secular value in some of it like the Sermon on the Mount or bits from Proverbs/Ecclesiastes, and some ridiculous shit like the seemingly last second appendage/addition of the bizarre schizophrenic/acid trip like Revelations after realizing it didn’t quite have enough of the fear factor any good religious text needs to sink its hooks in and allow for the exercise control over its herds.

Since homosexuality is condemned in the Bible, it follows that homosexuals marrying is not God’s will and would be, in fact, sinful.

It means the gov't can't dictate to citizens what religion they should practice. Religious freedom is in our founding documemts, allowing anyone to practice any religion they choose. In our Pledge of Allegiance, we say we are "one nation under God." We have prayers in school. It says "In God We Trust" on our federal reserve notes. Religion & our gov't do commingle. AI has advanced to the point where it can reach conclusions (judgements) that are devoid of prejudice, politics, and religious ideologies. The only way to achieve justice is to not judge. @@user-zy4wv7yx1z thx for your reply. I don't think sexual orientation can be even remotely understood as the same thing as being black. I've walked into pizza shops barefooted plenty of times when on the Wildwood boardwalk and I personally don't think racism and bigotry are the same thing. Racism is a specific type of bigotry directed towards a person of a different race than your own. And although I might not agree with someone who is a bigot or a racist for that matter, in America your hatred towards people who are different is considered free speech and is constitutionally protected.

@@danthomas6587 To me, it's all the same. If you hate someone for a race they were born into without a choice, and if you hate someone for being born with a sexual orientation that isn't the choice, I do not see a difference.
I can see that being visibly black in the US, you could be exposed to more racism on a daily basis. As opposed to being white and gay. I can't comment on that because I'm not black.
But any hatred against a person for how they were born is unacceptable and the government should not condone that behavior
