Hearing this for piano-only actually clarifies the chords and the structure of the melodies. Nothing gets lost or overwhelmed the way sometimes it can in orchestral versions. I've always loved the Holberg Suite in any form, but this rendition is so enlightening. Thank you for posting.
So, so grateful. Thank you for uploading. Grieg is our composer this academic term and my children and I have been sitting eraptured by Eva Knardahl's interpretation.
I was just listening to the orchestral version on TV paired with scenes from country life and was looking for that video bt couldn't find it.... this piano version is wonderful too... thank you. This music sooths my soul.
This is such a fantastic suite - I absolutely love it and this movement is utterly heartrending. My teacher describes it as 'grieving;emotionally wounded' and I agree. Lovely, sensitive playing.
The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano and I prefer it thus. The sound quality here is not wonderful but it is well worth a listen. Unfortunately RUclips has rather few recordings of the piano version. I would love to hear it recorded by Helene Grimaud.
3:25 - 3:31 the poignant chords: so beautifully highlighted by the irregular rhytm 4:57 I always feel so rushed when playing these short notes...she takes so much beautiful time to pronounce them (also compared with Joel Hastings) while the motive in the right hand still works. 5:38 - 5:40 the note seems to hang on forever A splendid lecture on agogics.
This piece conveys the purest form of grief I can imagine. Truly heart wrenching.
