- The biggest music award show is this Sunday, and for the second time, the Grammy Awards will feature an African Music Performance category. However, this year, the nominee list has sparked debate about the category’s diversity. Grammy CEO Harvey Mason Jnr admits the academy lacks judges with sufficient knowledge of other African genres.

Grammys is not a Pan-African Awards... Nigeria has worked had enough to dominate. They solely takes African music to global level...
Yes, the Grammy is not a Pan-African award, the voters probably don’t know and understand the music. Africa should create its own Grammy and stop allowing others to determine who they are without a complete appreciation of the culture.
Nigerians are great musicians and has been on the continent for a long time and still is #1 today and the broader world is starting to notice that.
As a kenyan, I agree
The guy talking about showcasing what's happening in Tanzania and Kenya, forgot to ask himself one question: *are they making impact in the world?*
Tohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Don't mind him. All his village musicians will come to Grammy. All because of Afrobeats

Do u know how long afrobeats been pushing to get recognized internationally!!??? Comeon, amapiano is just starting. U need to put in d hard work first then gradually it will get there
Afrobeats did 15 billion streams on Spotify in 2024, and Amapiano did 1.5 billion (about half of which was in Nigeria). So are they really in competition? Seriously???? Or has Afrobeats truly become a global genre, while Amapiano is just getting started? Or maybe this BBC Africa report is just a thinly disguised dose of Naija-envy by other African countries feeling very entitled?
Don’t mind them.
Is amapiano a genre though or just a beat/sound? What even is afrobeat and why can't amapiano be considered afrobeat? All amapiano songs have the same beat/sound and elements whereas there's no one beat in so-called afrobeat. It's more of a genre with multiple sounds. It's mostly just Nigerian pop music that inherited the name from the Fela Kuti genre.
@@felixm.c4091 show me one amapiano song that sounds that sound the same 😂😂😂😂😂 majority of Nigeria are literally using amapiano elements in their music and y'all don't even know what real AfroDEAD sounds like 😂😂😂😂😂
Nigeria is the entertainment capital of Africa. Plain and Simple. Even they knows that.
@@Ebwalkman even the 1.5 billion are mainly from Tyler... The rest are from other SA's artistes & some Nigerian acts...
Let me understand this so Nigeria does all the work to get an African category into Grammy and now all other African countries are angry that Nigeria is reping the food of it labour unbelievable
The agenda is to hate on anything Naija by other Africans ,they forgot that Nigerian is black race identity
@@Kunsco02 Did you know that South Africa has 52 Grammy Awards all together while Nigeria doesnt even have 15? Sit down Nigeria you are no match with South Africa. The best part is that SA achieved this milestone with different genres while Nigeria for more than 50 years still your'll created a new popping genre. This shows how your'll lack creativity, all your'll know is to copy and paste other people's styles. What a bunch of lame loosers.

Nigeria is the AFRICAN king in economy. Influence and music. Get over it!!! 🇳🇬 🇳🇬 🇳🇬 🇳🇬 🇳🇬 🇳🇬
Nigerians created an entire wave out of nothing. All the interest from spotify, etc. is from Nigerian Afrobeats. Afrobeats got so big and popular that the Grammy recognized it MUST acknowledge the successes in this genre and created a music award. Now it's an issue that Afrobeats is dominating the Grammy nominations (after only year two of the award). Knowing my people, Nigerian artists are probably a year or two from pulling all their music from this silly Grammy stuff and letting them and the rest of una do whatever the heck you want with music no one has heard of.
When other African countries were winning, Nigerians never complained about anything. Instead of fighting Afrobeat, let's talk about creating more categories for Africa.
I NEED AFRICA to come up with their own AWARD SHOW n STOP trying to get the west to recognize them in order to feel important. We are a continent of our own n we can surely do an award more then the Grammy, let’s get it together ppl
No thank you. African countries need to come of with their own award shows.
Just as Africa needs to come up with its own version of the BBC (and even arguably its own RUclips), but meanwhile here we are….🤦♀️
The Grammys are NOT compulsory for anyone, and no one is being forced to submit nominations for the Grammys. Those not interested should simply move on.
Why are you complaining
Why are you complaining

You guys complaining about Afrobeat should cover your faces in shame... What African sound besides Afrobeat has gotten global impact??? in 2024 alone Afrobeat did 15 billion Streams and the second highest Amanpiano did 1.5 billion in streams, is there a competition there???Please shussshhh please guys.
Why is it that whenever Nigeria gets it right it has to be compared with other African countries or other African countries will begin to compare themselves with Nigeria. Two Nigerian ministers were invited to President Trump's inauguration and some Ghanaians claimed that one of them that is Nathaniel Bassey was a Ghanaian.
Nigerians have never envied or striven with any African country rather has helped many of them at their seasons of crises or slavery to be free e.g. South Africa.
BBC Africa? This is BBC South Africa disguised as BBC Africa...when tyler won last time over all the Nigerian Artist, no complain...
You no mind them
Nah, abeg no lie. Complaints plenty. But it was kinda justified😂
And Tyla's "water" has no African elements in it. Just a little drums, this can be compared to Celine Dion "I'm alive" with African drums. Does that make it an African genre? Certainly not!
😂😂 Gbam! U have sumed up everything...
You so dumb that you can't even understand that Water is 100 percent african by its rythm and its beat. Listen carefully the rhythm and you gonna see that is afrobeat
What is an African genre? Because there is no such thing be specific you think it has to sound like Afrobeats? 😂😂
@@gideonmoseri4850😂😂😂
The keys used in afrobeats are R&B..does that make more African. The whole world today has no original sound there's always a sound derived from another country
South Africa bagged everything last year without any complaint but this year they are complaining. Tyler has been winning all year but they are complaining now.
But Nigeria 🇳🇬 is the owners of afrobeat invented by Fela Kuti

Fela invented afrobeat not afrobeats there is a difference
Let me understand something here, most people who complain are South Africans; when Tyla won it last year, they didn't complain or refuse the award because it was in the AfroBeats Category.

This is a disease among black people. When it was dominated by other countries, no one said a thing. You do not hear or see this among other races. We always have some kind of negativity towards each other. Congratulate the nominated artiste and move on. Do better. Push harder. Work harder. Smh. We are going nowhere with this attitude.
You are so wrong. You are insulated within the black community’s issues, and that makes you think other races are all so ‘United’. But those in the UK know how people in Scotland throw parties when the England soccer team is knocked out of the World Cup. Or how Indians and Pakistanis are always at each other’s necks. China v Taiwan etc… It’s not just black folks.
Crabs in a barrel mentality
Your mentality is very disgusting . Just becoz this is the only issue ur eyes can only see doesn’t mean all other races doesn’t have problems and what does this even has to do with black race . The Grammys is an American institution with standards that follows the American culture and entertainment markets, success abroad can only apply enough pressure to acknowledge the existence of a particular style or genre in music, just like rock and roll in the 50s. I wouldn’t get high hopes for opening the gates to let African music get recognized in America otherwise we should be retroactively recognizing many powerful artists that walked this earth moving renowned clubs around the world before we feel guilty about these ones.
Grammy needs afrobeat artist than they need the award. The Beat hace existed since the days of Kuti without them winning award did they not thrive. The dying baby oil award needs to stay relevant using african youthful population, i hope africans can wake up and ignore this dying award.
Grammy is a popularity contest; popularity in the US. Look at the past winners; apart from Burna who deserved it the year he won, every other winner was not the favorite among the nominees including Tems this year. But like Tyla last year, Tems had hits in the US. That's all that matters unfortunately

Grammy, like other awards, has standards. You're not rewarded for showing up, nor is it done by country. If any country feels left out, simply find out the standards...excel those standards, and you'd find yourself there.
If it's by popularity, Davido would have won already.
Africa can choose to have its own Pan African show.
Finally, when K-pop (S Korean) wins, you do not see other other Asian countries crying as if it's their award, yet Phillipines, Indonesia, China have artistes.
Africans and African countries must grow up and quit seeking validation. If you can't celebrate those who have been recognized, go ahead and lift your bar beyond mediocrity. Otherwise, GFTOH.
