This is what a shake down is about. Small kinks that has to be fixed before perfection. Amazing stop at the end. I hope you enjoyed it much. All the love for you two. ❤
Bill, great perseverance on the problem. Love the drone perspective on the two anchorages. Grace, thank you for filming the drama when you did not want to, keeping it real. And, at the end, that was a lovely expression of gratitude.
Stay grounded and positive, getting back on the water has no ground . It’s all of negative, stay focused strong ? fly with the wind. Stay Golden eagles , you guys dominate .
Wouldn't be boat life if things didn't break! Good thing Bill can troubleshoot and fix everything. So happy to see things getting back to normal.and smiles on your faces.
Stu Davies here, Practical Boat Owner “the engine whisperer”. Diesel engine stopping means no fuel. Confirmed by sludge In the filters, you have diesel bug in the tank. It is blocking your filters. You need to access the tank interior and clean it out. It ain’t going to go away! It is caused by water in the bottom of the tank, the bugs grow in the interface between the water and the diesel fuel. Probably caused by your time in the yard, condensation dripping from the top of the tank. Use a biocide every time you top up after cleaning the tank out. I have used a Pela engine oil change pump to suck sludge outof a filled tank.
They had that problem in an earlier episode while in Florida, when Brian from Delos helped Bill clean that gunk out of their fuel tank. Not sure if it's still the same tank now, though, as they might have changed it during the refit.
You really have to love that life to be able to constantly deal with unexpected surprises (fishing line on the prop, junk in fuel, vent fan, does it ever end? Na where would the fun in that be? Take care guys, looking good Ms Grace.
Those two anchorages were stunning! So glad you had some natural beauty and refreshing waters to soothe the troubles you experienced. Thanks for keeping it real guys…wishing you more uplifting moments!
You have such an amazing group of followers here that have so many great experiences about their own boats and are willing to share. Some of us are furiously taking down notes for future reference I’m sure! Grace, we hope that future endeavors offer smooth sailing that will continue to replenish your reserves. As always, stay safe out there!
One really has to be a jack of all trades when you live on a sailboat. It also helps to be calm and level headed. Luckily, you two have all that; very groovy, very groovy indeed. Stay safe and stay healthy. I trust you are doing well, health wise Grace.
To look at the fishing line a different way. You guys picking it up in your prop, likely saved the life of some sea creature by getting it out of the water. Nice work.
Great food, great company and an idyllic spot, very nice indeed. I feel for you guys, but at least it's happening now and not on the main passage. Having that forward scan is pretty cool. Wow, good find on that fishing line. I hope your engine problems get sorted. At least you are now in such a beautiful spot. Love the vlog :)
Trials and tribulations but the outcome was ok. You have so many new systems and refits/repairs to shakedown. Once the gremlins are worked out, it'll be smooth sailing. Grace you're looking healthier all the time. Hopefully your strength is returning.
Perhaps my favorite video to date. The transition from stressing from the cancer to the beautiful, rugged Sea of Cortez. And the joy!!!Damn engine but always some problem when cruising. Hopefully it’s fixed. Great job Bill. I lived on both the west side and the east side of the Sea of Cortez and it is a majestic slice of this beautiful earth. I was thrilled to see you in the water again Grace. Hey, what were the white things floating in the water. Jellyfish? I’m so excited to see the upcoming videos. Much love from Florida.
It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish... a few trial and error quick fixes, eliminate possibilities and viola... the engine is purring again... Hope the problem is completely solved now.... That last anchorage, just beautiful!
@CalicoSkiesSailing Right. Or, why dolphins body surf. Whales sounding. Especially our Grey Whales that go by us in California twice a year going and coming from Alaska to Baja, California.
Bill, I fought a fuel problem on one of my previous boats. Boat had a 3GM30 Yanmar. Anyway, I kept having to bleed the fuel system and finally found a small crack in the plastic sediment bowl of the primary Racor filter. The crack was out of sight with the bowl in place. I replaced the bowl and the fuel issue was solved. Fuel issues can be difficult to solve. I had replaced the fuel pump, the fuel lines (thinking maybe the intake line might be collapsing internally) and changed all filter elements. Engine would randomly shut down and when I bled the fuel system then it would start. Once I found the cracked bowl and replaced that all was good. A friend had a leaking vacuum gauge on his racor filter that was introducing air into his fuel system.
From what you showed us, the diesel filter was not perfectly airtight the first time. Just my educated guess, as this summer I spent two days to figure out the same thing on my boat. I cleaned the diesel from all the gunk and it was not it. The third time I cleaned the filter again, I managed to close it airtight (by accident) et voilà! problem disappeared!
Nice to have peace and quiet with your anchorage all to yourself. And, more importantly it looks like you guys are working towards the good part of the bathtub curve of serviceability after the refit. Fair winds and following seas!

I do love that cool mat, and BorgeRv has some great products, especially their mini air conditioner. Anticipating problems like your engine fuel issue, I was today installing the main part of a twin Raycor filter arrangement. Because my Southerly has a ver tight engine bay I had to do some extreme metal work to compact the filter set down where the old filter (basic, not water separator) sat. But in the process I discovered I could get real extended functionality with a few added valves and then some more bits. So the feature set is that you can draw tank fuel through either or both filters, or shut the fuel off from both (engine run away). You can also draw fuel from a reserve either through the filters or directly into the engine secondary filter (a drum fuel is likely to be cleaner than tank fuel. Then I had a thought and looked up Marco Fuel pumps, and their 15 L/m UP3 is only $150, so with 2 more valves this very compact system can fuel polish the main tanks through the Raycor filters. You can also Polish fuel in reserve tanks (drums) through the main filters. You can also use the pump to transfer fuel from one tank to another. The Marco UP3 pump comes with what looks like a very capable pre filter which in my system will go at the tank selection point so gunk like that Diesel Bug doesn’t get in the small lines to the engine. I’m still waiting for the Pump to arrive so can’t talk about success yet. Hat tip, the secret to keeping the assembly small was by using “Banjo” fittings.
Will you ever catch Delos? I know in episode time you aren't even out of Mexican waters....I miss the FAMILY! Delos, One Life and Calico Skies.....and adopted orphan Parlay Revival! Hope all is good Grace n Bill.

Bill it seems like a fuel supply issue, the boat runs for so long until its starved of fuel.., maybe run some Diesel Redex through the system to clean out the injectors?
We love your videos…….. We thought it was funny when you mentioned the party boats in puerto Penasco. I told my wife that bands on those boats sound like high school marching bands😂😂 I think you guys must have left shortly before we arrived and hauled out. Best wishes Gary and Ena SV Divergent

Tough times can grow ones learning, expand a person's depth of knowledge, perseverance and character. But sometimes you just want it to stop to rest. Praying for restful, peaceful and joyful times. I know you have done some awesome work on Calico Skies while up on the hard and it looks great! Before or if and when you head out over the Pacific….please consider an engine rebuild, I really think that workhorse engine just needs a little more serious TLS before you consider that big one.
there are a Lot of things floating around ,and around, like shipping containers, huge trees, half sunken boats... dangerous pokie stuff. At least you will get a warning now..
The forward scan won't see things at the water surface. Those point mostly down but a little forward. To have stopping time you would need to go fairly slow still.
Breath taking this anchorage you finally anchored. Hopefully engine problem is resolved. I have said it before I will say it again Bill and Grace you two are amazing. Your video showing your boat life the up's the down's the personal lives of you both has been amazing to follow and it brings a huge smile and at times tears. Hey guy's just wanted too say thank you for another awesome episode and that I hope that your dam engine will keep goin for you! Safe travels guy's and enjoy
I am glad you got to enjoy Isla San Luis and the Gonzaga Bay area I have a house there it is my special place. Too bad I was not there I would have loved to take Bill spearfishing. I have been going there and spearfishing since I I was a kid.
Hey bill with new tanks your bound to get some crap in the lines. it,s a boat lol. grace your looking great and i hope your feeling great also. my consult comes on the 6th scared but soo ready. i watch all the videos and wait for the next one. hang in there you two.
So the tanks build up deposits on the sides of the tanks. On the hard, with no sloshing of fuel, the crap dries out. Then when you get going, it all falls into the fuel and clogs the filters. Probably need a good tank polishing.
Your Racor primary has an o-ring between the bowl and the body that shrinks with age and heat. Very common to pull air through it and lead to drive you crazy fuel starvation. Ask me how I know this. There also is a check valve (ball, spring and o-ring seat) on some of the early Racor 500s that can be problematic. You may or not have this on yours. Another thought is did you add any kind of selector valve that is on the engine feed line? I have seen three way select valves pull air but not leak diesel. Maybe clamp off the feed from the forward/new tank if you plumbed that inline with the main engine fuel inlet line to rule out an air leak in that system. If you have a vacuum pump clamp off fuel at the pick up and see if it'll hold vacuum. If not you're pulling air into the fuel feed. Glad to see Grace doing so well. Cruise on...Happy wandering.
Thanks for another great episode! We love following your adventures. Being from Maine, we are curious where the rock you mentioned is. We don't want to be one of those two boats per year!
I am glad to see you both back into the cruising life. It is as the times before. Your forward looking sonar is the bomb! Shake down cruise funding a few minor issues. Thanks for sharing. 🤝❤️🏝️⛵️⚓️
open your fuel tank up and look for algae! it kept biting me until I had the tanks/cleared of it. Pieces would float up and close off the intake. never got to the racor filter. after a while they would settle to the bottom and the engine would start....
Nigel Calder, in one of his books on navigation noted not all areas are as accurately charted as local US or Canadian waters. The difference is bathymetric surveys in well traveled areas is far more current and as such more accurate. In less traveled waters the bathy might be a hundred years or more out of date and that much less accurate. It’s not that the obstruction moved it’s just that those early surveys had a far larger margin for error than what we get spoiled with in local waters. Mariners of old would cut a wide margin clear of charted obstructions, often miles. We’ve been spoiled with chart plotters with gps accuracy and tend not to use a large margin of safety with obstructions. With a paper chart the year of the datum is noted on the chart and that must be considered when traveling in some areas. The older the data the larger of safety margin must be used. As you mentioned local knowledge and cruising guides should be considered. Today we can overlay satellite imagery on our electronic charts which can help identifying obstructions. This is my long winded way of trying to point out the electronic chart might be based on the best information available when the chart was plotted, using the bathy collected with the primitive tools available 100+ years ago.
BourgeRV: Looking forward to your review of this 12 VDC fridge. I am considering this exact same model for our boat which only currently has an icebox.
If 2 boats a year sink after hitting the rock you have to wonder why it hasn’t been marked and no one has submitted an edit to Navionics. Crazy. Thanks for sharing!😊
Bill I can't recall if you added a fuel polishing system when you put the new tank in? I'm betting the diesel fuel quality can be really suspect in some ports. Could you have had some water pass through the fuel water separator?
HI there thank u 💓 Yes generally feeling pretty good. Have some off days with the hormone treatment but otherwise doing well, thank u for asking. It was actually just the lighting thankfully!!!
I was going to ask the same question, having sailed in and out of most harbors from Penobscot Bay to the the Bay of Fundy. I remember finding a rock in Mistake Harbor which wasn’t on the chart. Also in Long Cove off Vinalhaven. We were continually marking these on our paper charts.
@@linf525 If that incident happened during their trip to Maine with Delos (and not during their previous solo trip), my money would be on Mud Hole on Great Wass Island. It's years ago now since their video of that area was shared, but I remember that it looked like a very dodgy entrance and exit for both boats.
2:14.., Bill the batteries are made up of individual cells right contained within the plastic case?, is there a way you can (safely) remove one side of each batteries case just to allow more movement of air?

This is my long winded way of trying to point out the electronic chart might be based on the best information available when the chart was plotted, using the bathy collected with the primitive tools available 100+ years ago.
BourgeRV: Looking forward to your review of this 12 VDC fridge. I am considering this exact same model for our boat which only currently has an icebox.
So far so good! We are enjoying having s third fridge :)
If 2 boats a year sink after hitting the rock you have to wonder why it hasn’t been marked and no one has submitted an edit to Navionics. Crazy. Thanks for sharing!😊
Good question!
Bill I can't recall if you added a fuel polishing system when you put the new tank in? I'm betting the diesel fuel quality can be really suspect in some ports. Could you have had some water pass through the fuel water separator?
We filtered the fuel before adding it to the tank
Minute 13:00 More info on cooling mat please? Link in description?
Think it’s a “mattress cooler” on Amazon
yay! Calico Skies!
💓💓💓
Gorgeous anchorage for sure…curious why wouldn’t they put buoys on those rocks that have sunk boats??
Good question?!
Great video..keeping it real! Can you tell us the names of the anchorages?
These anchorages were around the Isla San Luis, the first one was that little island off to the north east 😎
Now you can start saving up for a new main sail..
Working on it!!
Hey guys love this episode. Grace are you feeling better? Did you hurt your eye? I hope all is well with you. Great episode again!
I think Bill was so pissed off with the fuel situation that when Grace said something he gave her a left hook to the eye ! lol Just kidding
HI there thank u 💓 Yes generally feeling pretty good. Have some off days with the hormone treatment but otherwise doing well, thank u for asking. It was actually just the lighting thankfully!!!
18:05 For some reason it looks like you have a black left eye 😛
yeah I noticed too and looked up all the comments this is the only mention of it.🤔
Funny lighting ..
It was weird lighting and I have a sunspot that sometimes looks black when its super bright :)
@@CalicoSkiesSailing I was just wondering and thank you for replying, I love your channel and I live vicariously through your experiences 🙏👍👏👏👏💕
👍👍👍
I hope that solved your fuel starvation issues.
Yep we have it under control now
12:26 Quentin Tarantino subscribes. 😅
LOL
Your love during the most TRAUMATIC point so far is beautiful. Soak it in ❤️🩹❤️🩹
My head door seems bowed in the middle! Totally closes but won’t latch! Let us know your fix!
We will!!
what harbor, wtat rock in maine?
Yes, Mud Hole very possible! Can’t go in there except high tide
We made it in mud hole ok! It was the "basin" on Vinalhaven.
@@CalicoSkiesSailing I am so impressed with Bill’s ability to troubleshoot. So happy you are sailing again!
crap/water in the fuel tank
I have always wanted ask, if you were to get a new boat. Would it be a mono hull, catamaran or trimaran? What length would you choose for both of you?
I think we'd stick to a mono, maybe mid 40's. We havent really given it too much thought! LOL
2:14.., Bill the batteries are made up of individual cells right contained within the plastic case?, is there a way you can (safely) remove one side of each batteries case just to allow more movement of air?
hmm that would probally void our warranty
@@CalicoSkiesSailing Yeah I guess so, hope you get the problem sorted somehow.
