@Eddie Morra well...i have a feeling sometimes that people encapsulates the 80s and 90s and get surprised when they see their hot female divas from before and saying that, "well, she's kinda not so hot anymore", like...what is to be expected? The 80s were 40 years ago and the 90s, 30 years ago. It's normal that these actresses with their 18-20 yo are now in their 40s-50s yo...so yeah, older > less attractive. Not to mention, seeing them without makeup...or girls in general without makeup, if they are 10 out of 10 with makeup, many goes to 8 out of 10 without it, best case scenerio.
@@jvam16 Yes you are correct. Some actresses drink and drug and end up looking horrible, while other actresses take care of themselves and age more gracefully. But in the end, time and gravity will always be the great equalizer. That said, Ms. Connelly has aged with grace, but aged she has-would not bang her now. Not her fault, it's just time and gravity. If anything, this movie makes those of us who grew up in 80's/90's want to go back in time, especially if one compares that bygone era to today's current state of affairs.
I didn’t know Hughes wrote this! It makes sense. Jim loves her for her personality, not just her body. The ads just flaunted her looks, and were crude. I actually saw this opening night!

I really love how this movie is about young adults after Highschool. Not a lot of movies seem to show just how much a young person’s world can shrink after they graduate.
@czechmeoutbabe1997 Indeed. I used to hang out with my high school friends in-between college semesters (winter break, and summer breaks) but upon college graduation, all my high school friends and acquaintances who also were attending their college/ university of their choice that I used to meet up with during the college breaks started going their separate ways, and I stayed put in and around my hometown and it felt strange, like everybody just disappeared. I eventually made newer friends in time, but you are correct that there is a window period where one's high school social circle gets smaller, and newer friends and acquaintances eventually come along in time.

Adam, you made some great points on this movie, thanks for posting your thoughts. I agree too that the robbers completely throw a monkey wrench in the storyline. If it were me doing this story, I would have ditched the thieves all together, and instead focused on the romance angle between Jim and Josie. That said though, the main female character in Career Opportunities, "Josie" has an unrealistic premise-which is that a trophy princess has the ability to: 1.) Be kind 2.) Have the ability for deep thought 3.) Be willing to foot the bill for a trip 4.) Go for a dude pushing a broom at a discount store. It has also been said however that “…art gives us something we cannot have in real life ” like a Josie McClellan-a goddess with the heart of an angel, which is someone only to be found in a movie like this or another dimension of existence. This why films like this will always have a place in hetero mens’ psyche. And I too appreciate the fact that a good part of the story takes place in a Target store. As of 2021 there are still Target Stores throughout the Midwest, USA, despite the presence of Walmart. Heck, everytime I walk into a Target I can't help but think of Career Opportunities LOL. A final thought: though Career Opportunities was filmed in latter part of 1990 and released in 1991, the story and screenplay had to have been written sometime in the 1980’s-which imho made the final production have an 80’s gestalt. One might argue then, that this movie was the very last of the campy 1980’s films marking an end of a era that many yearn for. I cite the fact that it was filmed in an actual shopping mall-in the anchor store (a Target store and uses the Target name in the movie) with growing nostalgia due to the dying off of these malls in today's current dead mall trend. My apologies for the longish post. I subbed to your channel, and thanks again!
How bout that! I didn’t know it was written so much earlier before it’s production began. With that it mind, I think you’re right, it does have an 80s feel to it, with the zaniness of it all reminding me of comedies from the 80s. And I agree, yes, totally unrealistic but I do love it for the fantastical elements. And Frank Whaley does such a good making me believe it. He’s got a certain goofy charm that draws people in. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Very well put 👍
I don't care about the marketing... I don't care who directed this movie... I do agree that the 3rd Act could have swang a different way, but I've loved this movie since the day it came out... Jennifer Connelly was, is, and will always be beautiful... Frank Whaley is a very talented actor ! Thanks for this video !
Jennifer Connelly is 80% of this movie. I think the problem is that this type of movie was made already, in a department store with a mannequin that comes to life, and that movie wasn't that great either. This movie missed its time period too. 1991 was different than 1987...the Gulf War, grunge, and a slowing economy...it was a darker mood. If Connelly wasn't in this movie...none of us would give it a 2nd thought.
I think our opinion on the movie diverged a little. But that’s okay 👌 I think Frank Whaley carries the movie pretty well on his merits. But hey, I’m a little biased as I’m a fan.
They put Jennifer Connelly in that white shirt and well my 19 yr old self in 1991 had to see the movie. For me, it was just a fun flick and a fantasy that I lived through Jim. I remembered my high school crush and imagined what it would be like if I were locked overnight in a Target with her! (And she was Jen??!) I don't even think we even had Targets in Canada, but wtv. Never gave the 3rd act much thought , but I do agree with you. I've seen parts of this movie countless times.
Just watched this movie for the first time. I liked it until the robbers got involved. Then it tanked for me. But I liked it up until that point. I liked Jim cause he was such a shit but not a bad guy. Reminded me of myself in the past just fucking around at work, The movie overall had a very nostalgic feeling. I think because it’s about young people dealing with their emotions and such.
2006. My senior year in HS. Amidst an otherwise horrible year, I found this film on HBO Family and probably because of my procrastinator nature at the time, it grabbed me. And thanks to heavy rotation back then, it held on tight. Now it’s just a pleasant time capsule of a wing of the 90s that I was way too young to fully experience. Also, Tiny Little Heart Attack still slaps!
This movie was underrated and depressing. Even though Jennifer Connelly's acting wasn't great. Her character realizes that might be her best years. She also falls for a liar who works as night janitor at Target. It's just a great feel good movie.
Connelly's acting felt perfect to me. She fully captured the spaced out dissociating vibe of a girl who has everything in life except love and a purpose. As the movie goes on and Josie connects more with Jim she becomes more animated and more expressive, loosening up, like a fog is lifting from her character. She also does really well playing the role of someone who grew up rich and privileged, and thus somewhat out of touch with the world, the way she carries herself with so much deliberation and poise, the way she speaks with such measured and careful tone, I'm baffled that anyone can say Connelly did anything other than an outstanding job
I never saw the film in the 90s (I was in the military at the time) but after I got out in mid 90s i worked as a night stock at a Walmart in a small town in the south....it was alot like this film ....minus the criminals. It was good times.
Frank Whaleys funniest bits ever. The first half is one of the funniest movies, then it get hijacked and falls apart a bit. Still, it's wort seeing to see Frank Whaley at his funniest. It will actually make you laugh unlike some "comedies".
Dude, this flick was shot in a Target, long before they were Targét, taking a huge risk on a hella-“risqué” movie-however that translates... -to go from regional to national brand recognition, ‘cause Wal-Marts were already ubiquitous... Point is, if it were shot, today it’d far more likely to be shot at a Meijer’s, for name recognition, whereas, for Targét, it were to move to smaller, poorer markets. Hence the nickname, “Targét, as a fancy alternative to Wal-Mart, in still more selective areas. Good review, and I hope that gives you a different perspective from which to view this “step-into-the-‘90s” art piece... It was f-in’ AMAZING to see at the cinema, despite the flawed marketing... Cheers!
In the Midwest (where Target is based), we had Targets long before Walmart. Walmart was just starting to make a name for itself around the time this movie came out. Meijer is also very Midwestern, but it's still regional. It's huge in MI and IN, pretty big in OH and IL, reasonably well-known in WI and KY. But it drops off completely after that. Most people on the coasts haven't even heard of it. I do agree though that this was probably before Target was Targét and was mostly just competing with Kmart.
Im confused about this movie's setting. It says that the film was shot in a target in Monroe Georgia, but in the plot it takes place in Monroe Illinois. So the fact the plot takes place right next to the Illinois/Missouri boundary confuses me as to why it is stated the movie was shot in Monroe, Georgia near Atlanta. Anyways aside from that, the two protagonists are the best thing about the movie. The main character Jim is likable and probably the best actor in the film. And Jennifer Connelly is super breath taking in this film. I like how both of them are a little crazy, and somewhat town misfits. Im not sure if it was intentional, but yes Josie is an odd gal. I think it's interesting that Josie is kind of an oddball and this makes her more endearing. And the same for Jim and his antics. John Candy's brief role stole the show imo, so many good and witty lines in that small interaction. Anyways, I loved the premise of the show, young adults still at home even a few years after high school has ended. Town loser and hottest girl in town get stuck in a target together and discuss where they are at in their lives and why Jim shouldn't settle for just living at home. And the ending is satisfying they run away together to LA and have a better future. My biggest criticisms of the film is it could have had more scenes with just Jim and Josie together in target or in LA, and the robber part of the plot was annoying.
You did a great job! Thank you for taking the time to do this! I’m very excited to see this now because with your video on top of a video someone created on here (me kitty) with the use of scenes from the film has got me extremely excited to check out the film!
Thanks, Frankie! I’ll see if I can find that video you mentioned. The movie is a real treat and good escapist fun. It’s good for nostalgic reasons but it transcends that and just tells a fun and slightly romantic story
Surprised to find a video essay on a one-off movie like this. I watched the movie after that Buttercup video and I seriously enjoyed it. It’s just a casual movie that anyone can enjoy that satisfies the viewer, kind of like Ferris Bueller but more of a rom com
Thanks for watching! It’s the lesser talked about movies that I enjoy covering. I haven’t seen the buttercup video but I’ll look for it. I’ve been seeing a lot of songs put to career opportunities recently, which is cool because it keeps the movie alive and introduces it to a whole new generation. But you’re right, it’s light and fun and has some of that Ferris flavor
They tries to sell this as a teenage sex comedy, WTF. The movie has a lot of innuendo but, that's all plus I thought that the characters were about 22 or 23 even maybe 25 years old. The way his family talks about his career history, like the blunder and constant firings have been going on for years. Yes, his dad says if your not in school you pay rent but, his sister who worked at a bank clearly older paid rent, so I thought he meant you decided to not attend college, so now years later this is where he is. Also Jennifer Connelly's seems to have been taking care of her dad for the past years with high school now a long gone memory and most of her friends seem to have moved on she is stuck (not to mention her father beats basically kept her their in town). The $50,000 she has on her; it seems she had to steal it or keep knowledge of it secretive if she some how saved up, so she has no financial freedom at all either. In the end this movie is a classic.
@@EverydayTape A digitally restored Blu-Ray would be nice. I was so use to watching Mad Men on Netflix, then a few months pasted and yesterday, free no more, gone. I couldn't afford to buy the seasons on other streaming services. I got a AMC+ trial so I can watch Mad Men; at least the app offers the BBC world news as well. I lost like 11 movies I bought on my old amazon account because someone broke into my account so, I'll even take the crap DVD of this movie. I just like to have the physical movie.
Hey Adam, this video is very well-made. I kept nodding my head in agreement listening to your take of this movie. Career Opportunities Is indeed very underrated. Believe it or not I was one of the few people who actually saw this flick in the theater. To this day...money well spent. Like you, I wasn’t very aware of Frank Whaley prior to this movie, although I’m sure I saw him in “Field of Dreams”. And again like you, I’ve followed his career since Career Opportunities. Some may know him from roles in “Pulp Fiction”, “School of Rock”, a smaller but important part in “JFK”, or as Robby Krieger In “The Doors”. Some lesser known performances of his that I’ve enjoyed are as Paul “Father” Mundy in the 1992 WWII drama “A Midnight Clear“, and as Mason in the 2007 horror movie “Vacancy”. Let’s not forget his turn in another underrated movie “Swimming with Sharks as you so astutely pointed out in your video. Is Kevin Spacey’s character a total dick in that movie or what, but I digress. I agree with you that the 3rd act of Career Opportunities loses some steam. I wanted to stay with the Jim and Josie characters. A girl like that had probably not given Jim the time of day before. I wanted them to be together longer to see how Jim would have handled it with all of his quirkiness and idiosyncrasies in tow. The scenes that Jim makes outrageous boasts and tries acting like a big shot in front of the three kids or while dog watching I find particularly satisfying. It’s that hint of “smarminess” Whaley adds to the character that makes him instantly likable for me. For some the 3rd act will be hard to forgive I imagine but I’m able to overlook it and enjoy it for all of the things they got right, not least of which is the casting of Jennifer Connelly as Josie. It would be easy to write her off as just another cliche bombshell character but Connelly plays the character slightly off. This makes it believable that she would stick around to hang out with Jim instead of looking for any possible way out so as not be stuck in a Target all night long with the town liar. All in all a fun film that I’m sure I’ll watch a few more times in my lifetime. I had a good time watching your profile of this movie. Great job man! 👍🏻
Hey, thank you! That's pretty cool you got to see it in the theater. I didn't have the chance to. I don't even remember it coming out in theaters in my area. Frank Whaley is excellent and you named a few movies that I don't think I've had a chance to see, like A Midnight Clear and The Doors. I'll have to take a peek at those. Thankfully, Swimming with Sharks has survived as a cult fav. I still remember the first time I saw that movie. It was in the 90's on late night cable and it blew my mind! I remember thinking, "so it's got the guy from Career Opportunities and the guy from The Ref? This has got to be worth watching." And it was, of course! And yes, Kevin Spacey's character was a jerk...but so much fun to watch and quote. I wouldn't say the third act is unenjoyable. I accept the movie as is. But yeah, it looks like we are on the same page when it comes to possibly exploring the dynamics of Jim and Josie. And you're right, Whaley does such a great job making his character a "likable loser" type. I think it's the kind of flavoring that isn't always written on the page but rather something the actor brings to the role. Which, I agree, Jennifer Connelly is able to achieve as well by adding some shading to the performance. I'm working on another video now, so please keep an eye out for that.
Very much agree with this review. Only 82 minutes and a fun watch. Very sort of fits the early 90s very well. I kinda get sad Jennifer more than once talked about being not very fond of the film. I think she felt it placed too much emphasis on her looks. She was very beautiful but I could still see here she brought depth to this character.
Me too! I was pleasantly surprised that she was using her body to foil the criminals, and it wasn’t just a crude sex comedy. The ads didn’t explain that.
The mannerisms of the character that Whaley played in that Tarantino movie was very much like his character in Career Opportunities; there is some congruency there.
This movie reminded me of a Breakfast Club-esque, mad-cap kind of comedy. While the Breakfast Club delved more into High School and teen issues, this movie explored the limitations of one's life (blue collar vs. white collar) and how they come to influence the outcome of your adult life. Though I ultimately thought that the movie lacked the depth of other John Hughes movies, this is a very light-hearted, fun movie with some pretty funny and memorable moments... I like to think of it an interesting blend of the Breakfast Club and Home Alone... And of course, who WOULDN'T want to be locked in a Target with Jennifer Connelly all night? Lol.
I hadn’t thought of the movie in those terms but your description makes perfect sense. I agree and I think it’s best to see the movie as “light-hearted,” as you said, and you should just enjoy the ride. No, it’s not a Hughes’ best work but it is an interesting blend of Hughes’ elements.
Adam you got all the facts right about this movie, but you did not quite put it together correctly and missed an important part of this movie. You are correct that Jim is a dreamer, and you are right that the people of this small town were too small minded to get, that Jim has a talent. You are right that his dreams are too big for this little town. His talent also does not fit well in this small town. Maybe you did not get that Josie saw something she has in common with Jim, and you did not mention the point in the movie where she saw that shared something that Jim demonstrated clearly. What happens at that point in the movie, while two crooks have Jim and Josie at gunpoint, Jim picks up an AM FM radio turns it on and pretends to be talking to a large group of guys with guns with "infrared scopes aimed at" two crooks heads. Then Jim talks into a book saying, "Men we have a WD-40. That's right a full scale PMS." The two crooks then lay on the ground and give up their guns. Josie then excitedly say: "That was Great!" The major clue that you got right is that the movie winds up with Jim and Josie in Hollywood. You even got that Jim sees Hollywood as Jimwood at the end. This is because Jim's and Josie's talent which earned them the nickname Liar and Tease in the small town, would be greatly appreciated in Hollywood. So they leave a town where Jim can not find a career, went to Hollywood in a movie called "Career Opportunities" So consider what shared talent Jim and Josie have that would be appreciated in Hollywood.
Hi, Jake. Thanks for watching my video. Please share my content if you can. Any little bit helps, after all. I gave some thought to your critiques and comments and I see the point your are emphasizing, that Jim and Josie made a connection in that moment, a connection of personality traits that would benefit them in Hollywood. I hadn't considered this point but it is a fine point to bring up, so thank you for mentioning it in your comments.
@@EverydayTape Adam, I agree with the poster who stated you would be a great director. If Career Opportunities had gotten rid of the robbers as you had mentioned, the film would of had a better chance of...well being much better. And if that happened, there could very well have been, dare I say, a sequel where they both (Jim and Josie) could take advantage of their skills in Hollywood. This is of course, pointless speculation on my part.
I think of this movie as a collection of enjoyable parts. I could see this being a remake that might be a technically better overall movie but probably won't leave a lasting impression as strong as the original.
I agree. Lots of moments. And it could easily be remade. I’m willing to bet it’s been considered for the remake treatment but hasn’t made the light of day.
@@EverydayTape Barring the rare exceptions, remakes generally are a disaster IMHO. Though this film is a misfire, there were indeed some good aspects. One of them was Jim and Josie getting to know each other as human beings. I get the impression that today's zeitgeist is a bit to volatile and polemic for a remake. Look at what movies are out there today: one super hero franchise after another. And it seems that gone are any realistic dialogs where people are connecting for all the realistic reasons. There is too much dysfunctional behavior in the World where a movie such as this would not evoke some kind of mutant critism from the walking wounded or offend somebody.
I get your outlook but I do have to say it’s a tad cynical for me. I think there’s still potential for good stuff, beyond super hero films and whatnot. And I’m not particularly concerned with offending people either.
I got to do this dream while i was a kid. My dad worked at a IcaMaxi (Swedish massive supermarket), and i usually brought my aggressive inlines and skated/grinded away at the rails for the store shelves, eat candy/cake drink sodas and skate all night. :P
I sorta treat this movie as a psychological thriller and from that perspective the film is pretty good. Mainly because Jennifer's dream-like appearance, not just the way she looks, the way she appears. Kissing the guest on his lip in front of the father? Show up amid isles midnight all dressed in black? Coupled with dream-like shots and face. Hard to believe she is real. Gives a bit Mulholland Drive or Requiem for a Dream vibe. In a addition, our guy Jim? Larger than life dreamer, town lair? Those almost cartoonish robber? I wouldn't be surprised if the alarm wakes up our Jim at the very end.
Oh my gosh, thank God I've found someone who has the same opinion as me: that those thieves were so unnecessary and badly used in the movie it basically ruined half of it. I really agree with you about the way it should have ended.
I loved this movie and really identified with the character Jim Dodge. I always thought the movie was quite innocent but Jennifer Connelly was just so damn hot.
@The Goody Barn I have a pirate copy, low res but the Target name is clearly visible. It is rare that an actual name of a real store is used in movies, and this is one of the aspects I do like about Career Opportunities-using a real store name makes the movie connect better with the audience imho. There are interesting themes explored in this presentation about this movie. And Target's name getting blurred out makes me think that there could be minor, side takeaway, which would be: don't apply for a job at Target, because they're assholes LOL :) Just Joking. I used to work at aTarget a few decades back while in high school-nice folks. Maybe the executives at Target eventually felt that Career Opportunities didn't present them in the best light.
I’m surprised they allowed this to be made. Target was very conservative in the ‘90s. They didn’t sell beer or cigarettes! I bet they were glad it tanked.
Ohh man i love these movie am from Mumbai India 😍 and love that song Nuthin on my mind that brings me my old school days shiny sun evening 🤤🤤🤤🤤 old 90s
i remember watching this as a kid and it was all cool until he was skating around with a wedding bridal headpiece. I was like this guy is wearing girls clothes WTF. That Jennifer Connelly always a fan always
If you notice, the boss takes him through hardware, then Jim hangs out alone in the women’s department. Then, he finds her in the lingerie section. There’s a theme to it.
I totally agree about the 3rd act problem. Jim's whole character is having a lower middle class angst about wanting to make it big but not having the skills or education to get a good job.
The setting, Frank Whaley, and partially Jennifer Connelly are uh-mazing. The script isn't the best. I feel like the cuts to the fathers throughout are unnecessarily. But i do like when Jim's dad can't sleep but it drags on. Anyways, Jennifer is great in it but Frank is the best part in this. I personally find the character more interesting than Ferris Bueller or Loyd Dobler from Say Anything. I really.wish they would have focused on Jim more instead of the ceiminals, Jenifer the dad's, etc. I like how the two leads have chemistry but don't seem to be listening to each other for the first half.
Swimming with Sharks is a very good movie totally and terribly ripped off by terrible bosses. The writing and acting is so superior that unless you look at the two movies you wouldn't see comparison. One creates tension between the characters and the other goes for yuks.
aaaaah! you're ruining it! I haven't seen it yet and obviously don't want to know what happens, I love Weird Science and Ferris Bueller's etc so this will be a new one from that era for me - please add CONTAINS SPOILERS to your description. Thank you.
When someone makes a 10 minute or so video describing a film and why they think it’s underrated or otherwise; it’s majorly clear before playing that there are going to be spoilers included.
Thank you for thinking so! And thanks for the input. I think I’ve got a few years to go to get that far. But I’m going to keep working at it. I’m writing a new video now

The movie was not filmed in the latter part of 1990. It was filmed in the latter part of 1989 - from November 13, 1989, to January 12, 1990.
@@jaydee4009thanks for that info.
I read that Frank Whaley signed to do the movie for $250,000.00. It might've been more, but that's all he could afford to pay them.
@@EverydayTape Frank Whaley really is a great actor, so no debate on that.
@@EverydayTape : What?
They put Jennifer Connelly in that white shirt and well my 19 yr old self in 1991 had to see the movie. For me, it was just a fun flick and a fantasy that I lived through Jim. I remembered my high school crush and imagined what it would be like if I were locked overnight in a Target with her! (And she was Jen??!) I don't even think we even had Targets in Canada, but wtv.
Never gave the 3rd act much thought , but I do agree with you. I've seen parts of this movie countless times.
The dance sequence with Connolly and Whaley....
Jennifer Connolly riding the pony. Unforgettable!
Really underrated. It’s not perfect but it’s one of my favorites. Especially from that time period. Thanks for bringing more attention to it.
No problem! Thanks for giving me a look 👍
I like these wily characters like Jim Dodge, Ferris Bueller, Zack Morris, etc.
A John Hughes comedy masterpiece
I have no idea how I missed this film!? I loved Jennifer Connolly..
Hope you get a chance to check it out. It’s very 90s but most of the plot holds up as a coming of age story.
@@EverydayTape Thanks for the video! New subscriber here 😁
Much obliged, sir. Tell your friends
JIMGET! Totally underrated film. I like this more then any other John Hughes written film.
Like Dutch, it was overlooked.
@@EverydayTape Now there's another good one. Ed O'Neill should have done more movies.
Agreed. He’s an underrated actor
This has to be one of the last movies that showed so many TDK cassette tapes
Those TDK cassette tapes are still for sale at that Target store!
Jennifer just stood out, gorgeous in that white tank top,te soundtrack was good too, forever young ... especially looking back so many years
Just watched this movie for the first time. I liked it until the robbers got involved. Then it tanked for me. But I liked it up until that point. I liked Jim cause he was such a shit but not a bad guy. Reminded me of myself in the past just fucking around at work,
The movie overall had a very nostalgic feeling.
It just came out on blu ray, too.
@@EverydayTape Thanks.
@user-pi6vz5hr3c: What woman wouldn't want to marry a night janitor at Target?!
Agreed! Even though it slips a bit in the latter parts of the movie, it’s a lot of fun. It’s not a think piece but not every movie has to be.
Cheers!
Things were a bit different in my neck of the woods. We didn’t get a Walmart until much later. I don’t believe I’ve heard of Meijer’s
@@EverydayTape I grew up in a small town without Target, so it was a bit exotic for me.
An underrated Hughes movie for sure. But it’s had long legs.
Yeah, I get ya. The DVD isn’t the best but it’s better than nothing. I think it’ll eventually make to blu ray but it’ll be a bare bones copy.
I really hope Frank Whaley got to at least have a few fun dates with Jennifer Connelly. He was light years out of her league as a lead male role.
For me the movie was beautiful!
Anyone else kind of hurt that Whaley has been carrying around the cross of this movie's box office failure on his back?
It's 2021... & I miss 1991 :(
It was good times
I saw this at the theater because of Jennifer Connelly.
Me too! I was pleasantly surprised that she was using her body to foil the criminals, and it wasn’t just a crude sex comedy. The ads didn’t explain that.
30years later Target still never changed
If it works, no need.
Except, back then, the clothing models displayed on the walls looked like Jennifer Connelly. Now they are morbidly obese. (At least the women are)
4:53 I couldn't agree more
Jim was later shot dead after moving to LA and stealing a briefcase from a crime boss.
I bet there are few who know.
The mannerisms of the character that Whaley played in that Tarantino movie was very much like his character in Career Opportunities; there is some congruency there.
@tylertheguy3160: WHAATT??!!
@@EverydayTape definitely agreed
It’s basically Breakfast Club meets Home Alone! He goes from being a boy to a man.
Frank Whaley was very funny in the movie, he shouldn't blame himself for the demise. It was quirky, but funny.
Agreed. He did great with the material.
Adam you got all the facts right about this movie, but you did not quite put it together correctly and missed an important part of this movie.
You are correct that Jim is a dreamer, and
you are right that the people of this small town were too small minded to get, that Jim has a talent.
Josie then excitedly say: "That was Great!"
The major clue that you got right is that the movie winds up with Jim and Josie in Hollywood. You even got that Jim sees Hollywood as Jimwood at the end. This is because Jim's and Josie's talent which earned them the nickname Liar and Tease in the small town, would be greatly appreciated in Hollywood. So they leave a town where Jim can not find a career, went to Hollywood in a movie called "Career Opportunities"
So consider what shared talent Jim and Josie have that would be appreciated in Hollywood.
@@EverydayTape I think you got it now,
Jim and Josie have a talent for
acting.
Absolutely!
So many mechanical horses. So little time.
quirky funny movie....i saw in the theater....introduced me to jennifer who i instantly fell in love with
Very cool. I wish I could’ve seen it in the theater
@@EverydayTape I hear you ...better times will eventually come.
Yeah and there’s gems that come out here and there still, so I still love movies.

Me too and i was already familiar with Jennifer☺️
I got to do this dream while i was a kid. My dad worked at a IcaMaxi (Swedish massive supermarket), and i usually brought my aggressive inlines and skated/grinded away at the rails for the store shelves, eat candy/cake drink sodas and skate all night. :P
The movie is one of my favorites. Jennifer Connelly The most beautiful woman I've ever seen
Jennifer saved the movie, the plot seem too week,it is a little bit overlooked now cause people focus on the old vhs fun feelings rly much
I sorta treat this movie as a psychological thriller and from that perspective the film is pretty good.
I wrote a story about a teenager that mostly takes place in a department store at night. It's called Vibrant Night by Okami Carroll.
Any link to read your story
Sorry, I haven't read your story.
Oh my gosh, thank God I've found someone who has the same opinion as me: that those thieves were so unnecessary and badly used in the movie it basically ruined half of it. I really agree with you about the way it should have ended.
Great movie! Great ending ,ahead of its time. Jennifer Connelly at her best and absolutely stunning.
Yeah, you mentioned nothing of Jennifer Connelly's character and her story. I feel it's just as important as Frank's.
I loved this movie and really identified with the character Jim Dodge. I always thought the movie was quite innocent but Jennifer Connelly was just so damn hot.
that unibrow tho!
On Dermot? I think that was a little joke that got glazed over. I almost forgot about it! But it works for the character, I think 🤔
Drastic measures need to be taken to make someone as handsome as Dermot Mulroney look unattractive.
I agree, movie was excellent until the criminals are introduced.
Yeah, it went downhill. Too bad. But not unwatchable.
@@EverydayTape I agree, I still love it. But it really wasn't necessary.
Just discovered your channel and it’s as awesome as 1991 Jennifer Connelly.
They blur out TARGET on later versions of this
I didn’t know about that. Too bad. Never erase history!
Lol the target in my town literally hasn't changed, looking at this movie
A movie about struggles under capitalism and conspicuous consumption. People in the upper class have hardships just like those in lower class

As goofy as that moment is, I love it. Jim gets to be himself for a bit.
At least the first two acts are still so much fun
