Unless you are mixing Perlite into soil for either potted plants or outdoor garden, you should rinse the dust off perlite. There is a ton of white and gray dust/crushed-perlite that will settle to the bottom of a bucket of water with perlite. Rinsing perlite will increase air circulation around perlite, by eliminating the dust that clogs up the gaps. Also, you would want to minimize perlite "dust" from getting washed into water circulation pumps during use. However, even if you are going to use perlite in outdoor garden soil, I still think it is a good thing to rinse the dust off before storage (it makes it MUCH nicer to work with later), unless you always use a whole bag at once, in which case, you could cut an opening in the bag and fill the bag with water, to help cut down on airborne dust.
@@TaraRaeRae charcoal is amazing for indoor plants and any enclosure of a living thing. It absorbs odors, chemicals, nutrients and reduces chances of mold. I recommend it on the top of soil for houseplants and with any pets kept in an enclosure.
@@FusionDeveloper Thanks! I was actually looking for that in walmart last night. No luck. Dumb question but can I use the charcoal you get for BBq's? Just temp until I find the one for plants.
Thanks for your question. Some growers will rinse their perlite after sifting it to help remove the small particles. Since the purpose of using perlite is to aid in aeration of the soil dust-sized particles are actually working against that goal by clogging up the spaces in your soil. Anything you can do to minimize the dust is helpful.
Wow! I thought he would be like, “yup! Light, rock looking thingie you put with your dirt! Noooo” 😅😅😅 thank you for your time to share the knowledge...
Hi, thanks for the comment. Perlite does not decompose and can be reused in various potting mixes. However, we recommend using a 2% hydrogen peroxide solution to disinfect the pebbles. Perlite does not absorb water, it simply aids in aerating the rootzone so more oxygen can be absorbed by your plants.
Hi Samuele. It really depends on your application. Generally perlite is used for aeration whereas vermiculite is used more for water retention. Some potting mixes (especially for seedlings) will incorporate both but it really comes down to what you're trying to grow and how. Hope this helps!
Some people breath in asbestos for years and have no issues. It is dependent on the person. If you're super sensitive, bad health, etc.. possibly. If you live life in that much fear, you should check in with your dr about anxiety issues because that much stress is unhealthy.
Hello! Thank you for the great video! you mentioned that you used perlite mixed with vermiculite, may I know whats the ratio? I'm finding the best way to grow succulents hydroponically so I'm really leaning towards perlite but am afraid it doesn't hold enough water.
I used straight perlite only.. Yes it doesnt hold much thats what makes it great, the aeration is fantastic for the roots. Simple answer is you have to feed a bit more often. Usually one water a day, but if youve got really big pots you can go twice. Another good thing is you wont ever have to worry about drowing the roots with perlite..
If perlite is volcanic glass, can you produce it from ordinary glass? I've seen succulent plants grown in 100% perlite (I bought some plants and they're doing well), so I'm considering using it for rooting cuttings. As you said, it is the dust from that stuff that is currently holding me back from this. I have been re-using old potting soil by washing-out old peat and keeping the mineral ingredients (sand and grit) but I was never able to do it with perlite, because it floats and goes away with the peat. Is there a way to re-use perlite by separating it from old peat?
I saw on a video someone used perilite on top of his potted plants to keep the soil temperature cooler. Is this a good idea and are there alternative materials that can be used for potted plant production?
because breathing any dust is bad for..... besides that it's a volcanic glass and can behave similarly to fiberglass when it comes to damage to your lungs. And again breathing any solid that's floating in the air is bad for you....
Prolly cuts holes in your lungs causing emphysema.I have it from breathing sawdust..... 28 years in a sawmill driving forklifts & front end loaders. No need to wear a mask for just a little dust here or there, that is wrong it all adds up.I'm only able to vape now....take care
Hi. Deciding on what % of perlite to add into your growing medium depends on what crop you’re growing. The majority of plants fall under the “prefers well-draining soil” category. Most peat moss and perlite blends will consist of 30% perlite to allow better aeration in the rootzone. Going with a standard 70% peat moss and 30% perlite mix works well for most crops and is a safe bet for optimal performance. Having better aeration in the rootzone can dramatically reduce incidences of root rot from developing in the soil.
I use perlite to inculcate ball python eggs it hold water without being sloshy which you need 100% humidity but the eggs can’t get water on them because they can drown!
no it s very dangerous it makes microparticular dust which flows in the air and sticks and bud most of buds grown actualy are perlite contaminated but nobody want to reveal this secret because of big money and customer dont complain so SMOKE PERLITE LEGAL CALIFORNIAN WEED !
its only dangerous when you first open it, you must wear a mask, tons of dust comes out first time. Once youve filled the pot with perlite give it a good rinse uder the tap like a flush, after that you dont get dust problems its all washed away. Most of it ends up in the air when you first tip it out, so crucial to wear a mask. Im a severe asthmatic so I was a bit worried but I got told to just wear a mask till its in the pot and rinsed thoroughly then im fine..

Hi Thabang, yes you can. Lots of folks use rockwool because it has great water holding capacity and is fairly cheap to buy. We aren't a huge fan because it's not a terribly sustainable option. Check out our video on rockwool to learn more about that.

Hahaha no it isn't. Perlite is perlite and Styrofoam is POLYSTYRENE. Perlite is expanded volcanic glass and are more like Lava Rocks you see that are sold for gas grills or decorative landscaping. You may have seem bits of styrofoam in dirt/soil, but that isn't perlite at all, not even remotely similar, other than their approximate color (perlite has a gray tint, while styrofoam is pure white). You can throw a handful or perlite at someone, you can't throw a handful of tiny expanded styrofoam balls at someone because they will be stopped by the air and float down to the ground like confetti. If you aren't convinced, I would be glad to sell you 8 quart bags of styrofoam for $4 per bag at any quantity you want (even by the truckload), which is cheaper than you can buy perlite.
FINALLY I understand the difference between perlite and vermiculite! You've provided the best description of anything I've read. Thank you!
