You're a good man! I know "a guy" that was out for 8 months due to an injury doing rehab and what not, he paid on time for all those months he couldn't go($100+/month). When he was finally ready to go back to training, he asked he's instructor if he could spare 3 months while he finish paying the rest of his medical bills. The instructor's response? "oh I'm sorry I can't do that, but I can place your account in hold for 3 months but you can't train" so the guy felt so disappointed, he decided to just cancel the contract. The instructor's response? "Sure, and whenever you wanna come train, you can just pay for the week $90 we have options like that or just comeback when you finish paying those medical bills" lol I mean keep in mind this school is doing pretty well and is well known! My point is, while is important to make money, that student, stopped believing in this whole "jiujitsu brotherhood" and understood it was always just business. So now that former student that once loved that "jiujitsu culture" now feels like that it's more like "jiujitsu marketing" now days.
The Chinese have a saying "when you see water running uphill that is somebody returning a favour". I kept my membership running through the lockdown but not so I can ask for a favour down the line. Difficult situation but you have to frame it. All the best 👊🏻
@@Bighandsdown Its about supporting each other because today Im down but tomorrow ill be up and viceversa. You support me, I support you and everyone is happy. Or even if is just "business". That school just lost that student. Which means, one less membership. Those numbers add up real quick. Good luck champ!
That's a shame. My brother was made redundant in the 2008 crash and said to his instructor that he needs to save the money from he received. His instructor told him he can train free of charge and when he gets a job just start up the direct debit again. I don't even know the instructor but I'll do anything I can to help him or his school because what he did for my brother
He’s a punk he beats up elderly homeless people then put it online. If he met someone of the same skills that he would be dominated that’s why he stays out of Texas
I really wish more teachers/coaches could be like you. Unfortunately I’ve probably just had a bad experience with my last school. I know there’s teaches like you out there, I’ll be looking for them in Fresno CA.
I wish my old instructor cared as much as you. I got injured multiple times because my instructor didn’t show me shit when it came to fundamentals . He just showed a series of moves had us try it out for a few minutes then the rest of the class was rolling. I got double under stacked by a 300 lb spazz but instead of him passing he just put all his weight on my legs and squished my back and neck together. Well I ended up having to have surgery from a herniated disc.
DAMN ... sorry you had such a bad experience. I'm a relative newbie. I joined two months ago on my 52nd birthday. Getting injured is always on my mind. I'm not in the best shape, but I'm a bigger buy (6ft3 at 240 lbs and dropping). Most people in the gym are smaller and weaker than I am. I've only just begun "rolling" with other belts (all higher ranked than me), but I'm smart enough to know to control my power/aggressiveness and match my abilities to the person I'm rolling with. I'm sorry the *meathead* you rolled with did not. 😲😲😲
As a white belt with 2 stripes, 5'4 and 155 lbs, I stopped rolling with bigger guys after a 240 lbs stacked on me while I had him on closed guard. Not the instructor's fault but some are just an ass. So now I asked their weight and just be up front. Too bad for that student but I am happy that my son and I have a great instructor who cares for our well being. Oss!
Don't ever stack.... If your experienced, then that's OK I guess. But especially newer players, you shouldn't be rolling by people above 20-30 pounds heavier. And don't if you feel a stack coming on, just tap.
'Your on MY MIND' that comment just BLEW.... MY MIND. I have been trying to start a Jiu-jitsu acedemy here in Quetzaltenango for the past 4 years. The last class it was just me and my Gracie certified instructor...... HELP!!!!
Got injured 2x at a no go jujitsu school. Had to take time off work n heal. This was almost over a year ago. I never went back to that gym I'm at a muay thai gym now. I still wanna roll but I'm scared to get hurt again.
I trained at his lacey location when I was little me and my dad both trained but eventually life changed and we stopped going seeing this in 2022 is *O O F*
I left because of the money. Every instructor in the area in NJ wanted $180 a month for twice a week an hour. In this economy, no fuckin way! That price only attracts yuppies that wont compete..
That's definitely an issue the coach needs to address. Gym culture starts at the top. Problem is some coaches can be too "nice" and let toxic behaviour get out of hand. Ryron Gracie had a great analogy for this: if you have a fish tank, and then one of the fish is poisoned and dies. If you don't take the fish out of the tank, the whole tank gets infected and soon all of the water and fish get poisoned too. If you want to run a good gym, you have to get the right students for your gym. Not just take any a$$hole who won't change their ways but pays on time.
I needed to hear this. Ive been wanting to quit because i go twice a week and my school pretty much feels 3 times a week means you are serious. I work rotating shift work so it doesnt work that way for me. I have 10 years of judo and have progressed a lot people have been saying im blue belt level for over a year now and i have 2.5 years of training at this point. At our recent ceremony i noticed a girl get her purple belt wayyy past the time she was due. I feel like its almost a game. I know im not supposed to cate about belt but im tired of getting injured for only messing with white belts i really just want to learn. Any reccomendations anyone?
Depends how much you care about it. If your tired or being at that level ramp your training up to 4 times a week, go hard and get better. Belt doesnt matter skill does.

I think Tom's got affiliate schools all over. I'm sure if you google it or maybe even DM him you can find one. Good luck!
I Appreciate this.
Awesome post. Very moving and inspiring. Also enlightening to hear from that perspective. Thanks for sharing that Tom.

I think I’ve been to that school. Sorry for your crap luck. The bad instructors are the majority in my opinion.

This is really great. I'll never quit now. I wasn't going to quit anyway . . . but now I can't!
Beautifully stated...

How about if the coach is great but the students are toxic
