USA: REACTION TO KILLING OF BRITISH SOLDIER IN NORTHERN IRELAND

    The Clinton administration has condemned the killing of a British soldier in Northern Ireland.
    White House spokesman Mike McCurry said the sniper shooting was a "serious escalation" of the conflict in Northern Ireland.
    And he said President Clinton is urging those connected with renewed violence to help restore a cease fire.
    The White House chose to describe the latest attack on British forces in Northern Ireland as murder.
    The British government blames the Irish Republican Army for the shooting that killed a 23-year old British soldier.
    And the Clinton administration says it is concerned that little is being done to convince the I-R-A to resume the cease fire that it ended over a year ago.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
    "The President continues to call upon those who can have influence with I-R-A to restore cease-fire. And clearly the escalation of the violence, murder of a British soldier, for the first time in years is a serious escalation. That does not reflect well on those who do claim to have allegiance to the concept of peace for the people of Northern Ireland."
    SUPER CAPTION: Mike McCurry, White House spokesman.
    White House spokesman, Mike McCurry said Clinton is still convinced the Belfast talks, led by American envoy George Mitchell, can spur all sides in the conflict to find a peaceful solution.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
    "The President is convinced that the people of Northern Ireland, the people who desire peace in Northern Ireland, remain committed to a process that can help the parties bridge their differences. And the President continues to believe that the Belfast talks that have been shared by Senator Mitchell, provide the opportunity to do that. The President has full support for those talks, he encourages all of those who share commitment to democratic values and to peace in Northern Ireland to bridge their differences."
    SUPER CAPTION: Mike McCurry, White House spokesman.
    The I-R-A resumed attacks in Northern Ireland last October with a double car-bomb attack inside the British army's Northern Ireland headquarters.

      A terrorist is someone who uses violence or the threat of violence to circumvent the democratic process to achieve their aim. If the majority in NI choose to leave the UK in a democratic way then so be it. Until that happens the IRA will always be terrorists.

      What people don't understand is that the British Government willingly turned Northern Ireland into a warzone with supplying one terror organisation with intel and arms, and provoking the other. The young british lad died for nothing and it's cruel, but it wasn't a provo who had sent him there. The Brits feared they'd loose Northern Ireland like they'd lost other colonies in the years before the Troubles. So they very much helped to escalate that conflict. They where the ones starting the murdering. Before Bloody Sunday the IRA blew up monuments, pillars and statues. Then the brits came with units like the MRF (check them out). They provoked the IRA (who were armed) with raids and stuff. People were killed by the army during those raids, not by the IRA. Then Bloody Sunday happened and the violence escalated and everyone involved who wasn't a murderer yet became one. But don't dare to believe the British Army came to Northern Ireland to secure peace or whatever because it was their government who turned the six counties into a powderkeg. And then they light it up so they can get in and get rid of everybody not thinking like them to consilidate their rule with oppression. And this does provoke violence and terrorism. Think about it. Take a look at Bloody Sunday or the Miami Show Band Massacre. Who are the murderers if one government tricks you into killing each other, sure there were mentals in the terrorist organisations and that conflict gave them a playground to kill people. All of them got released btw. Including the UFV guy who ran into a mostly catholic pub on halloween, shot a dozen of ppl while screaming "trick or treat". Freed by the Good Friday Agreement and the British Government. That guy went on to join a Neo-nazi group just to stab someone.

    • @PaddyInf
      @PaddyInf 4 года назад +6

      @Conor Fields I have done the research. I didn't mention the UVF or any other loyalist groups and neither did your one that I replied to. Your post only mentioned the British Army. The IRA killed between 550 and 700 civilians during the Troubles depending on the source and definition of civilian. The British Army killed a total of 299 including terrorists. The RUC killed around 50. So even at the low end of the figures the IRA killed far more civilians than the total number of people killed by the police and army combined. Have a look at CAIN or the Sutton index which are both available on line and are considered the most accurate research bases available online for this.

    • @PaddyInf
      @PaddyInf 4 года назад +8

      @Conor FieldsI don't need too look it up, I was there. I grew up a 5 minute walk from Holy Cross primary. My parents still live in the Ballysillan Road area and I actually attended Wheatfield Primary which faces it as a child. I was posted in Belfast at the time. My Regiment was part of the security forces response in protecting the kids walking to school, so I was one of the soldiers you see with shields and riot gear, shielding the children. We were the ones being shot at and having petrol, acid and pipe bombs thrown at us. I completely disagreed with the whole way how both sides acted. The Loyalists had genuine grievances as there had been several incidents of people driving from Ardoybe and trying to run over people putting up flags in the adjacent Glenbryn estate, so the loyalists protested by trying to stop anyone going past the estate from Ardoyne. Remember that Holy Cross children had used that route for decades even through the worst of the Troubles. However attacking young children was just wrong in every way. It should not have happened, and the Loyalists should be ashamed of their conduct.
      What they don't show on TV however is that the children did not need to walk that way to get to the school. There is an alternate entrance that is accessible via the Crumlin Road which completely bypasses the Glenbryn estate, and many parents used this. However some Catholic parents insisted on walking past the estate despite knowing they would be attacked. I understand the desire to be seen by the media, however I personally wouldn't risk my children for the sake of the cameras.

    Amazing how many Americans believe that Ulster is occupied by force by the British. The majority of people in Northern Ireland consider themselves to be British and not Irish, it's a democrat country and if the majority of people in Northern Ireland wanted to be united with Eire they would have been able to decide by the ballot box.. the fact is, that most of the Northern Irish people prefer to remain in the UK, it's not due to nasty English occupiers, it's due to the fact that the majority have chosen to remain. In the future the percentage of Catholics may mean that they outnumber the Protestants in Ulster and if they become the majority they may choose to vote for union with Eire. The point is, it's naïve and ignorant to believe that Ulster is an occupied territory, it's population live in one of the oldest democracies in the world.

      @Bucket with a face on it Mate. It's documented in British Army historical files. There is literally army generals and commanders who are in documentaries telling of the torture and abuse that went on. British collusion with Unionist paramilitaries giving them weapons to kill innocent catholics. The para regiments treated everyone with total disdain, shooting 13 unarmed civilians during a fucking civil rights protest where no one war armed.
      You obviously have no idea about the scale of the Troubles or the involvement of the SAS, Special Branch and the Army. Please go watch some documentaries and read up on wiki before responding.
