Mate, these videos and your presentation are sincerely sensational. I never comment online and this is a RUclips first for me…but your mix of putting great music out there, educating interested folks on how it actually works (be it layering tracks/loops, specific equipment choices, or creating the overall holistic end-result) are really energising and inspirational. And your conversation is very real, specific and helpful. I play guitar and sing a bit, in addition to being a full time professional, husband and father to two young kids. So it’s usually on my on these days and private…and you’ve inspired me to take the step and go out and get my own setup! It’s on the way and I’m looking forward to creating a much richer musical outcome. Let’s see how I go. All the best, and ps - you have great solo chops on guitar…some John Mayer inspired melodies / riffs in there?….you should put out a video or two with more exploratory solo guitar in there! Would be great to listen. Cheers
This is the first video I ever seen on your channel, and I already know I need to sub ! That was so awesome! I want to hear more of that beat you made ! You seem like a very knowledgeable and amazing person. I learned so much just watching this short video, that I can't wait to see what else you have posted. Thanks again, I genuinely appreciate you. Keep doing what you love, and stay safe out there. ✌️† 🎸
Just got this pedal for my new pedalboard and acoustic guitar. It was a little more complicated to start than I thought but you helped clear up a lot. Thanks!
Another good video! Have you done a video on the drum sound from a guitar? I love my acoustic sound, both room and plugged in, but the drum sound is not up to snuff. When I bought it, few people were drumming on guitar.
What guitar do you have mate? It ALL has to do with the pickup. Taylor Guitars are good example of an amazing guitar that sounds fantastic in the studio but when plugged in they usually sound very thin with no real kick sound ability.
@@carlwockner I have an Alvarez Yairi DY 62. It’s from 1986. Piezo pickups have come a long way since then. I have a newer Yamaha that makes good drum sounds, but the guitar tone is really dead. Go figure!
it's a sound! I've always had this pedal in mind, but I have a question: I play the guitar by continuously hitting the snare imitating a bass drum while playing harmonies. If I had the pedal activated, would it negatively affect those "kick" hits?
Really tempted by one of these for solo acoustic/vocal gigs... not sure it'll work well though? Does the threshold ever cause unwanted bass notes to pop through?
@@Millennial_Mike only if you have it set too high or low. You can’t strum with it but certainly finger style with the threshold set correct works great:)
@@carlwockner oh from what I understand, when you dial the knob all the way down it becomes monophonic and detects the chord and only plays the fundamental bass note
@ yes that’s right however it detects each note and does an octave lower than each note. Generally it’s supposed to detect the lowest note and do that in polyphonic but each pedal is a little different. If you do a super clear strum of each string you’ll hear a bit of chaos with multiple octave notes
This is super cool! Thank you for the video! Also, this is unrelated to the octave pedal, but that looks to be a tablet in the middle of your pedalboard. How are making it play automatically when you push the pedals? And is there a specific software on the tablet itself?
Thanks Carl I pulled this pedal off my board because I didn’t understand the threshold determining how man bass notes I could get. Going to have to try again.
Hey Carl came across your channel while searching for boss Oc3 settings etc. Wow. Amazing ! I've been bigneing all of your videos. Question I'd you have time to answer how so you keep the other effects you have on your guitar like delay, trem, reverb etc. Out of the bass sound when playing in poly mode ? Or are those pedals/effects also effecting the bass as well. Thanks man. Love your stuff
Hi Carl, Great sound. I already saw a lot of great loopings from you. One question, I have bought an octave pedal but my sound just awful. It sounds like an distorted sound or like if you blow up your speaker. Do you know why this is and what I do wrong. I use my acoustic guitar with a rc-300 loop pedal straight to my PA system. Regards Michel
@@carlwockner Thanks for your answer. That is the problem maybe, my pedal does not have that option. It is the TC Electronic Nether Octaver Pedaal. But I guess it is better to buy the Boss OC 3 right?
Hey mate, yes I have the sy1 and love it. But for me the OC3 or 5 suit me better cus I like to adjust the threshold for different songs when I play both bass and rhythm at the same time.
@@smileyfdave I might have been talking about the direct signal level on the OC3. Most people only worry about the octave level. But making it pop it all about having the direct level involved also
Thanks mate:) it’s all in my most recent rig rundown video - hope that helps, a series of parametric eq’s and a klon OD but mostly it’s having the maton guitar pickup alongside it all🤙🏼
Can I use this octave pedal connected to my acoustic guitar in standard tuning to make it sound an octave lower ?? I have a lower singing voice ( bass ) and if that pedal does that it would make my singing a lot easier.
transposing the guitar an octave down won't change the key of your singing, unless you just do a full octave down vocally also. Which you could still do while the guitar is in the standard octave. It would technically work, but the pedal is not designed for that. You would run into audio issues for clarity etc.. Try the Digitech Drop pedal though, as that could just transpose the whole thing down a few steps which might help you practice without needing to learn different chords if that is a struggle. Hope that helps
I didn’t know about that threshhold knob. That’s pretty awesome
Carl, thanks for taking the time to show us how this all works. Really appreciate your work!

Thanks so much mate!! So pumped for you to turn it up a notch:) and yessir I’m a Mayer fan for life!!
I just bought OC3, thank you!
I use the Boss OC3 on my acoustic board. Very cool with looping.

Bout time I was getting the groove you would stop . love your creativity.
Thank you! I've had this pedal for 6 months but hadn't explored it yet other than the basic setting.
I liked the intro , Piiiwh piiiwh.. Great pedal., Love the Boss pedals.
Great video, thank you Carl for all tips. I got the boss octave and it's amazing how much it helps when you play alone
Just got this pedal for my new pedalboard and acoustic guitar. It was a little more complicated to start than I thought but you helped clear up a lot. Thanks!
Sounds great Carl! I use the TC electronics Octaver in the same way. Clear explenation dude. Like it. Keep m comming bro
Do you use the Sub'n'Up? How do you set it up to only affect the lower strings? I'm looking into this exact thing now, but thought it couldn't do it 😅
Thanks mate - I’ve heard the effect and wondered how it worked. I’ll be getting myself one of these babies now
So cool video, thanks man. I will buy the oc5 for my guitar and bass🎉
I have a similar setup with the headrush LB
Thank you.
super videjko, dakujem
Great informative Video, great musician as well
Great stuff. Love playing with octave pedals. Ok, I have to ask...who makes those awesome red glasses?
Oh yes... I've just found you. You inspire... You inspire... You inspireeeee!
Awesome video dude.. Your groove with that bass line was tight. 🎸💯. Thanks for the info..
Nice one Carl thanks

Yes, it would octave the bass hits and overload the sound too much.
First. awesome work, next, what do you think about boss oc5, compares to oc3?
Thanks! There’s no threshold dial on the oc5 so it’s a dealbreaker for me:(
Great demo on the bass. Bass, along with the drums, does create the groove. Big difference without it.
Hey my dude thank u 4 Makin a good, simple, straight forward video 🔥 🙏

Great demo Carl. Always wants me to buy the diesel maton as well !! 😃👌
Never been disappointed with my Mini Maton. They sound amazing plugged in.
Wow! Very helpful. Thank you so much❤
Hi Carl what looper is thar please with that screen etc. Thanks
Hey mate, all the pedals are in the description:)
Nice tone, what brand / model guitar is that?
Thanks it’s a Maton EMD6, all my equipment is listed in the description🤙🏼
Yes I like your content brother
Another really nice video! Why haven't you switched to the OC-5? Maybe you already have the sound you want.
The RC5 is great, but for my settings it has no difference than the OC3.
Really the only difference is the OC5 also has octave up.
Cool man!!!

Can these pedals just take every string down an octave instead of having 2 octaves playing at once?
Yes, technically that’s the polyphonic mode but it just doesn’t work well if you strum, you just have to pick one or 2 notes
Did you use to play in The Wiggles?
I wish! those guys are killing it

No latency at all. The OC5 is pretty killer:) it’s essentially the new version of the OC3
