  • 2014 marked the 40th anniversary of the passage of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), which established a set of national standards and regulations for all public water suppliers. The Minnesota Department of Health, which administers the Act in Minnesota on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, looked back on this historic legislation. Al Quie and Walter Mondale were in Congress at the time, and both share their thoughts and reflect on the significance of the Safe Drinking Water Act in this video. Betty McCollum, a current member of Congress, talks about the ongoing impact of the SDWA along with Steve Schneider of St. Paul Regional Water Services and the commissioners of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, who stress the importance of interagency cooperation in protecting water sources and keeping it safe to drink for people in Minnesota and beyond.
