So an observation. The two brothers whose father suggested they go over and take control of a situation that was none of their business… it’s my understanding that the first witness was the one that actually pushed the defendant in the water. I wonder can those two boys be indirectly responsible for the death. If I was pushed down like that damn right I’d be coming up fighting and if I had a weapon, all the more. I don’t think he should be convicted. I think he has remorse.

Something that is clear to me at this point is that the dad, when telling his group (the girls and guys, all drunk) to go over and de-escalate the situation, caused a significant escalation of the situation. That is what it's going to come down to. That group that admits they were intoxicated willingly injected themselves into a situation.

Fair assessment but depending on the state the main factor could be who had the last opportunity to not escalate and walk away. If he would have punched him back, no issue but by having a weapon, it supersedes a willing injection of bystanders. He “ took it to another level’ if you will. There were too many opportunities to walk away. However I don’t doubt his fear and if it was my dad I would want him to do what he had to, to make sure he was safe. First degree will be tough though. Just a horrible situation all around.

I’m on the river a lot. Most people drink and have a good time. I don’t recall too many times where a supposedly mature 50 something man indiscriminately starts stabbing kids. Not on my river outings

Self defense means force equals force. Show me where the kids force, the women's force equals 5 people, including minors being stabbed to death, disemboweled and left to die. This isn't self-defense by law. This is murder, first or second degree. Plus, he attempted murder, 5 counts. Being confronted by people for possible predator behavior does not equate to being legally allowed to stab multiple people to the point their insides were coming out. This is appalling!

@@aileenl7227 the level of aggression displayed doesn't lead me to believe they would've pursued if miu "fled", he engaged them and an unrelated woman physically in two occasions FIRST before ever being touched, used his weapon indiscriminately once drawing it stabbing a teenage girl with her back turned and 4 of the 5 victims being more or less "bystanders" entirely or by that point (which if getting physical and then backing off counts as disengaging for miu, it counts for any person who may have shoved or slapped him and then broken away from the conflict)

Did you even listen to the testimony? The gentleman that lost his phone told Miu not to worry about his phone because it was in a waterproof container and he had insurance on it. Miu chose to go and aggressively harassed the teenagers. The teenagers yelled at him and called him a pedo because he went directly toward them without explaining and grabbed their tubes and would not let them go. Regardless, Miu was out to hurt someone, he murdered one teenager, stabbed two others critically and disemboweled another. How in your alternate universe is this self defense. He also lied to the police after disposing of his weapon and said that he knew nothing about the stabbings and murder.

I think the prosecutor did a great job outlining the case during opening statements. The frame by frame pics of the video spoke volumes! I am very confused how and why he is looking for his phone "DOWNSTREAM" from his tubing party? I have never tubed UP stream! So why was he really down stream yards away from his wife and friends and right next to the young men & women he engaged with first & stabbed 5 of! His only real injuries were on his hands! This was not self defense! How many psychopaths were described as " responsible" before they were caught.. John Gacy comes to mind!
I honestly think he was looking for his friends phone and when the guy who was recording yelled at him and was holding the phone in a certain way, this old man thought they found his friends phone so that’s why he went towards them . I just don’t understand why before this incident happened they were old enough to be unsupervised and drinking but now all of a sudden they’re “kids” being “kids” . I really feel for this old man 😢

I thought that, at first, as well. However, the guy holding the phone had it tied/wrapped around his neck in a special case (I believe it was waterproof). So, what are the chances of Miu’s friend having the exact same case and attachment?
@@codreaming9304I would think if there’s 13 people around you and one of them said they found his phone that he would think one of them had it. As for the case holder and thing going around his neck, a lot of people have the same one as they buy it in the nearest shop/petrol station. When I was in Universal the waterproof cases were all the same and everyone had them.
I see that, he has this worried look like phone or property is being stolen, but his worried look goes up when being falsely and ignorantly accused of sex crimes before being assaulted by intoxicated tough youth gang. Which is serious with the lack of proof you need in sex assault convictions. And even more serious to true victims claiming sexual assualt. One thing being overlooked in all this is who was barefoot and who was wearing some kind of footwear. The bottom of the river had to be rocky and very slippery. That would affect how people moved and importantly how fast.

Madison storms over from the shore, gets up in his face and Ryley by her side pushing him and they have proved multiple times now with each of these teens that he didn’t even hit her in any way. They all said in their police report that they thought he was going to hit her failing to mention her up in his face and shoving him. Now they have all said he actually hit her but can’t remember if he punched or slapped her. They are all lying.
That's the problem with being falsely and ignorantly accused for sexual assault. It don't take much for convictions and value/belief.
Half the guys said they just heard the pedo word and that's what was enough for them. Then another kid said he just said it for no reason. He knew it would be just like if girl saying she was hit or sexual assaulted, very believable and antagonizing and instigating.

Defence keeps saying “you’d agree you were over the limit” over the limit for what? To float down a river, to talk to people, to make a statement to police, to get poked. I know the drinking age in USA is 21 (I’m Australia, hence my confusion), but I think the same point was harped on to other witnesses including this man’s older brother! The defense is assuming that the jury will buy into their theory that because kids were drunk on the river that they deserved to be killed, I guess. I’m disappointed that the prosecution isn’t fighting back on that. Being drunk and immature doesn’t condone that 50 something year old man’s actions. He should have been the “bigger man” and just walked away.
I just don't understand why the defendant didn't just walk away once things began to escalate. The teens behavior is atrocious, but he is the adult. Regardless, I think this might be a difficult one for the jury. Opinions seem to be pretty split.

The defendant wanted to protect his ego. That’s why he doesn’t just leave, why he decided to argue and as the argument escalated armed himself, while armed his hands stay by his side and his chest is puffed out (aggressive stance). Someone in fear for their life wouldn’t stand and argue they would look for a chance to leave and demand people get away from them.

Why does a grown man approach a group of teenagers holding a knife anyway? He is clearly holding the knife in his right hand when he approaches the two girls? Why. That’s not how you approach people to ask if they have seen a phone float past!?
Stabbing someone and backing away maybe self-defence, but gutting someone like that with intent to kill, and stabbing everyone around him is psychotic. He went over with the intent to use his knife 100%. Why did he even have one?

I've had a self-defense case myself, person was bigger than me by height and weight, took his shirt off and came at me, police that night called it mutual, DA called it an attack a week later. I lost my case because the judge said I could have walked away while it escalated and I could have gone another route to my apt. I lived on the 7th floor, defendant lived on the 4th.
IMO I certainly didn't help alleviate the situation, but both of us started something, it escalated and it ended with him hurt, that's the only reason I looked like a bad guy. This feels similar to me, not saying this guy should have pulled out a knife or gone over to those kids, but there's a point that everyone can be wrong and it escalates to a place of no return. Miu was wrong and certainly wasn't scared until he was getting tossed around in the water, but these kids should also be held accountable for taunting someone, while thinking nothing will come out of it. He had several groups of people coming into his face and talking sh*t. Again, this guy shouldn't have "hit" the first girl, but why was she even so close to him. Lots of bad decisions by everyone.

Because he was looking for a phone he heard them shout whilst holding up a phone. He thought they’d found it. Makes sense to me. They shouted to him, he responded, not visa versa.

Sadly, there was not a young person who had the wisdom to try to de-escalate the situation. They were all caught up in the moment. Had they learned the value of respecting their elders, things may have turned out differently.
Seems so many don't know the law. Force has to equal force for self defense. He threw first punch. Did the kids inappropriately, yell at him after his answer? Yes. That doesn't equate to stabbing multiple people and killing a minor.
