Funny enough I use saturn controllers for The DC Capcom fighting games. Specifically on SF3 since the D-Pad movements are very smooth with that game.

Controller on the Saturn is better , sprites are more accurate , better modes
Only thing dreamcast has over Saturn from what I understand is the special modes when selecting your characters style outside of the ism’s and when you do the reverse dramatic battle modes two different characters fight you simultaneously not 2 mirror characters. Which for example , fighting 2 Kens is easier then fighting let’s say ( which I know is a pair in the Dreamcast version ) Akuma and Cammy.

@Keith Courage RX-78-2 I agree that using stock controllers for measuring in-game performance (especially in a comparison video) is silly, but stock controllers being well-equipped for any type of game generally does help.
I also have the Retro-bit Saturn controller by the way, while it’s the best replication of it so far, it’s not quite 1:1. The D-Pad isn’t as rubbery and the L and R buttons don’t make the same type of contact. Not a major deal to me, but may be enough to put other people off using it. Certainly still miles better than using a Dreamcast controller though lol.

Even the PS1 version is very playable. Thanks for the side by side. If nothing else, it really shows how great the Saturn was with the 4MB expansion cart for these awesome Capcom fighters.

The Dreamcast version did not support 3x punch/kick buttons and had noticeable input lag alongside certain balance changes that made it play vastly different from the arcade version in certain ways. The input lag even affected SFA3U, a NAOMI version based on this early Dreamcast port. Additionally, only the online capable version had VGA support, and this version did not fix the input lag.

Those T Hawk frames were actually not in the original Zero 3. They were added to the Saturn version and then when Zero 3 returned to Arcades as Zero 3 Upper, they were used there as well. Dreamcast not having them isn't a sign of inferiority, but it being an earlier revision compared to Saturn and Upper.

Both the Saturn & Dreamcast versions are awesome. My absolute favorite version though is the PSP version, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max. It was a FANTASTIC port on the PSP with some neat extras/exclusives. They added Eagle (Street Fighter), Yun (Street Fighter III), and Maki (Final Fight 2) who were originally exclusive playable characters in the GBA version to the roster and gave them their own unique storylines and endings, they also added Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution as a playable character, in "Dramatic Battle" you can choose your 2 characters instead of only having Ken & Ryu from the outset, a "Variable Battle" mode was added where you can tag your partner in and out, and the "Reverse Dramatic Battle" mode from the Sega Saturn version where you continuously fight 2 characters at once, was also added. If you own a PSP it's quite literally a no brainer to own.

The more I want that the more I realize the Saturn might not've been able to get an arcade perfect port even with the 4mb cart. There's tons of content in the game that calls for a dip in the sampling rate of all SFX, certainly lower than XvSF and MSHvSF. Not only that but IIRC MvC had to cut frames from some animations that were more fluid in previous titles for the sake of having 3 characters loaded into memory at all times. Just look at how hard the PSX version got hit; because of the cutbacks they had to make it's a completely different game with no way to play the standard arcade mode at all. Maybe Capcom could've pulled it ofif they went the route of a higher capacity RAM expansion but that late in the Saturn's lifespan would've been pointless.

Unfortunately the lower resolution results in the screen being cropped which gives an advantage to smaller characters that can almost "hide" outside the screen at the edges or corners. This of course was even worse back in the day where CRT overscan crops the screen even more. Since the lower resolution is a Saturn limitation, it affects every single Capcom CPS 1 & 2 port for that console.

Saturn is more natural in terms of color. The sound is compressed. Stage backgrounds are farther out.
Dreamcast has vivid colors and dark shadows. The sound is louder and crisp. Details are more noticeable on sprites. Example being the ripples on Fei-Long's pants. Loading is faster. The backgrounds are slightly zoomed in. Also the life bars has a blend of colors rather than the Saturn's yellow.
I have both versions but for those that want some info of what to expect here.

The Dreamcast’s CPU, Hitachi SH-4, is a 32-bit CPU. The GPU, PowerVR CLX2 may have been 128-bit (some of its contemporary competitors, like ATI’s Rage Pro 128, definitely were). Not that any of this matters - processor register size is the worst way to define a console’s power and only made sense for a short period of time in the late 80’s/early 90’s (if even then).

I've played Street Fighter Alpha 3 on PS1, Dreamcast, and the PSP. I've heard of the Saturn port to SFA3 being a more faithful port than the PS1 thanks to the 4 MB RAM cartridge allowing for more character sprite data to be loaded into memory, which makes Dramatic Battles much less restrictive in the options allowed. Up close, the Dreamcast has faster loading time and some additional modes, including Network play, compared to the Saturn. But otherwise, both are pretty faithful ports to the arcade, on top of the additional characters and modes.
But you are right that the controller layout can also make a difference from a gameplay perspective. The Dreamcast's controller layout makes playing fighting games with the typical six-button layout for Capcom fighters a bit tedious for certain in-game actions compared to the Saturn's button layout. Do recall the Dreamcast's layout being a bit tricky to work with for some in-game actions playing Marvel vs Capcom that used Capcom's typical six-button fighting game layout.

(I bought a used copy in January of 99 for $50. Great price and surprisingly very well done considering the power of the PlayStation).
The weird thing about the Saturn release date (August 99) is that it was released a month after the Dreamcast version (July 99).

@@preamstrikbiz0 It's not odd cause the Sega Saturn fighter selection screen is the same as the PS1 version. The reason why the Dreamcast, GBA, and PSP versions put the character of Dee-Jay, T. Hawk, Guile, Balrog, and Evil Ryu at different spot at the fighter selection screen was that those are not CPS-2 ports of the game, they ran on different system hardware likely NAOMI so they use different source code for the game.

Saw the subtitles say Dreamcast is a 128-bit console; Dreamcast is a 32-bit console too, only difference is it's a more powerful 32-bit console than the Saturn because of the hardware it uses.
SFA3 Dreamcast: All arcade animations and resolution are intact but the hit detection is broken and custom combos don't work like they should; Dreamcast sound is also in mono.
Controls on DC also aren't as tight as they should be and it has nothing to do with the controller.
DC version is playable but not the version to turn to for serious play.
SFZ3 Saturn: All arcade animations plus more along with proper hit detection and proper custom combos. Saturn has reverse dramatic battle mode and sound is in stereo.
Saturn has a flaw with Zangief and T.Hawk when they use their supers the games slows down a little which means capcom didn't check for it and fix it before releasing the game. but the slowdown really doesn't hurt anything and actually gives a better feel of the pain a person would feel if they were being slammed around like that.
Controls are tight and and responsive just like Alpha 1 and 2.
