- French Defence Minister Florence Parly is scheduled to arrive in India on Thursday on a two-day visit that is aimed at further strengthening the already close bilateral strategic ties. Parly will hold wide-ranging talks with her Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh on December 17 to enhance defence and security ties between the two countries besides delving into pressing regional issues..
Emmanuel Macron was miffed as Australia scrapped the $90 billion submarine deal with France soon after the formation of AUKUS alliance. After AUKUS, India is reportedly topping the French agenda in the Indo-Pacific, under French EU presidency from January-June 2022. Will France share to share the nuclear submarine technology with India?

For those of you wondering why India needs tech from France when it already has it’s own nuke submarines, this is because the submarines that India built are ballistic missile subs (SSBN). These subs have reactors that are rated at around 83 MW, which is alot lower than what is required for an attack sub. For example, the Akula class runs on a 190 MW reactor. This is highly sensitive technology so it is very much controlled, therefore the procurement of such tech is very difficult. This is why AUKUS was such a big deal.

@JJ France Yep and the main issue of the australians was the delivery time and the cost.. The nuc subs will take more time to be ready and will be more expensive, and they will have zero autonomy on them.
Also, the Australians didn't call the US to ask them the subs, they called UK, but UK doesn't have the right to sell anything nuclear because their nuc tech comes from the US... so the only thing Boris could do was to call Biden to ask the permission... That's another big difference between UK and France...

@Jiang Dashan Nuclear attack subs and missile subs are different. Fast attack subs like Russian Akula class ( NATO designation) are used to hunt other subs and ships while Typhoon class and the American Ohio class are used to carry intercontinental ballistic missiles ( SLBMs).

No. Its not always about technology. India does not have enough experience and failure. U know what I mean
India has already built a nuclear powered submarine capable of second strike nuclear attack as part of the nuclear triad (INS Arihant). However the technology currently is new, costly, and cannot be employed at a very large scale. Further it takes a significant amount of time for any country to build defence technology. However, in the current hostile international environment, we need to modernise our military at a much faster pace than possible indigenously even at high-efficiency. Hence, defence cooperation and external procurement is essential. Having said that, it is true that the indigenous defence complex is weak and needs a lot of reforms. We are working on that and hope to become fully self dependent in the foreseeable future.

Nope you are Wrong.......Russia only Leading us Its Akula Class Submarines in 2024 for a period of 10 Years. Whether India will go for Akula Class or Barracuda Class Submarines for Project 75 Alpha will be decided by the Government and DAC.

Nuclear submarines can be classified into two types , SSBN ( ballistic) and SSN ( attack). Currently SSBNs are manufactured in India and three of them have been inducted into service. We however do not have the technology for SSN TYPE where we are loaning out subs from Russia. It would be highly beneficial if France can help build SSN TYPE in India.

France will help 2 built SSN if $ is good . Aussie scrapped the 12 diesel sub after 5 yrs when contract signed with no mfg in sight n price soared to 90B ! SSN is more stealth n can remain underwater till food rations finished. Diesel sub speed is much slower n needs to surface every 2-3 weeks.

Russia will always be our strategic partner ofc but now india is expanding so we are also trying to find out different alternatives. We are also leasing chakra II from Russia in the 2024(expected) . And S-400 is also from Russia only so we are just trying to find more partners.
