- How to shoot natural light portraits when shooting outside in direct sun with a shoot through umbrella. In this Laws of Light photography tutorial let me show you a beautiful way to light with a seven foot shoot through umbrella. That translucent allows the light to come through and to light her and give a beautiful light on her face. Take a look and let us know what you think! #NaturalLighting #OutdoorPortraits

I wonder if you can do a more dramatic shoot by using just tiny amount of light from that flash and slightly underexposing the background.
4:48 I didn't expect to learn such a brilliant posing trick during this video.
What a wonderful gift!
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for commenting!
I agree!!!
And when it rain's 🌧 You're all set.
Lolol
It might help a little.
Yes, sandbags or other secured items; if you have someone to assist make sure they do not walk away or start chatting and get distracted. :(
Great point. Have seen that happen a few times!
I LOVE my umbrellas - this is just one more reason! I actually have found that umbrellas are VERY under-rated/ under-appreciated - between shoot-through and silvers (with diffusion 'socks') you can do so much. My guess is that they simply don't make enough $$$ for the manufacturers to 'push' their utility. A 7foot silver with a diffusion sock is every bit as good - if not better (bigger) than a 5 foot Octa. (of course you can't put a grid on an umbrellas-probably the only real downside fro light spill control). Thanks again for a great tip!!
Great points! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I got one today, almost the exact same umbrella. Set me back 160USD but in was worth it. Did a portrait shoot today in bright sunligth. Absolutely amizing result! Great video, great tip!
Great to hear. Glad you found it so helpful!
This is an idea: can you cover a topic of insurance for your gear as well as liability insurance?
That is a good topic. Thanks for the idea!
@@TheSlantedLens You're welcome! I have not seen any channel covering this topic in depth.
I am surprised why you did not flip the whole orientation around and get much better lighting than this flat light you have in those images ….her back to the sun ( rim, real rim and not the fake rim when sun is peaking on top of her head from lowered umbrella that lights her from bottom up) and umbrella with the cup towards her reflecting this beautiful sun on this large reflector ( even it is translucent , it will for sure reflect the bright sun you have that day and you expose to her) and you will get a much gorgeous look ( sans your house door that you can throw out with the long lens to a pastel)
That would be another approach. Thanks for sharing!
"Yes" to bagging your lights: Safety & Professional! But too many photographers skip using sandbags with the following excuse: “Too heavy to carry on-location” - *Liability + Negligence!*
And also, costly when your gear gets blown over and ruined!
Smashed flashes are awesome.. builds reputation and character.. heard it from a streamer or three :) it has to be tru
Very informative video, love the look with the sunlight diffused with that giant umbrella. Just one other thing, if that is your home you might think about getting those gutters cleaned out.
LOL. Done. Thanks for watching!
So there is no flash working - just the umbrella?
Correct, that is just the Umbrella and the sunlight.
This is a brillant way to make use of an umbrella. Hats off!
Thank you. Glad you liked it!
As good as the portrait turned out to be...it is quite impractical to walk around with a huge umbrella and a stand for it.
I mean...are we all professional photographers looking for that "perfect" portrait? Isn't the weight of the camera itself enough during the walk in the park?
I mean...COMMON...
Try it. You may be surprised how much you love it.
Those gutters need cleaning.
Yep, we did clean them. Those seed pods fall off the trees during certain times of the year.
yep, very unsafe when it's windy... any visible difference between this and a big oval diffuser? I've got one (~1m), certainly an assistant is needed, but it's more handy anyway
That would be the difference, needing an assistant. And when the umbrella is set up like the image in the thumbnail you can get it quite close to the person you are photographing!
Hey JP, another awesome video. Thanks for this great technique. I have used it at weddings, works great!!!
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! I just ordered the umbrella, bracket and sandbags. Thanks!
That's awesome. Enjoy your shoots!
I don't have a 7 foot umbrella ... but i used 3 48" ones in a similar situation ... worked well, but I like how you found a balance.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video!
This was so dope. As an aspiring photographer this video will stay with me in my memory forever lol. It was that helpful!
Great to hear. Glad it was helpful!
What a beautiful idea is to use this large white umbrella to shoot using the sun. I love the way your model looks using this technic.
Glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thanks for your comment!
This was some cool, special, tech tips. Got to say...the look of the pictures was super nice!
Glad you like them and glad you found the video helpful!
Awesome!! I just bought one and now I can't wait to try this!!
That's great! Enjoy your shoot!
Thank you! Great piece of advise😊
You are so welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
I appreciate the inset illustration @3:46 Great tutorial once again J.P.!
My pleasure! Glad you found it helpful!
An amazing presentation. Thanks for the tip. Keep up the good work,
Glad you found it helpful!
Even a caveman like me easily understood today’s lesson.
Glad you found it worthwhile!
Great video. Thanks so much.
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Isn't that what they call a scrim ;)
Yeah, it is turning an umbrella into a translucent!
Nice!
Keep up the good work!
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Wish I didn't live in the world's windiest city. A sandbag has no effect
Bummer. Try an assistant or strapping it to something.
@@TheSlantedLens Haha. Id on't think uou understand. I was being literal with the world's windiest city. A 7ft umbrella is gonna be shredded to bits even if someone holds it. I occasionally make do with a smaller softbox and an assistant on less windy days
