TJ and Marcus always have competition that’s what made the show so successful and you can see how things started to turn around for Marcus after TJ joined his High School, but then after Season 1 he got used to it and they got along better.
He could have had a decent music career, he’s pretty artistically gifted in general but he didn’t have the same quality vocals as he got older as he did in his childhood. Motown likely simply didn’t have the budget to experiment with him.
