2015 appears to be when the designer first designed this set. They were making updates for the past several years until posting it to the brick link developer program in 2021
As a former astronomer, I have to admire some of the details of the build. The engineering room is more likely for liquid nitrogen that cools down the telescope (actually the CCD part). The yellow and black pillar is meant to support the telescope and isolate vibration from the rest of the building. The red light in the telescope room is the same idea as a darkroom where you handle films, and lastly coffee is always our dearest friend of course.
Guessing the stacked plates for the dome doors has to do with clutch power. 6 plates would hold better than 2 bricks. Very important since they slide open and would need to take more lateral stress.
Great looking set! I bet that was originally designed with the rock pieces, but for reasons of cost or availability, they were switched out to the brick built version. Especially for the fact the bricks are built in exactly the same way as the rock pieces, which there's no need for!
This was a set I was disappointed that Lego didn't pick up, although lovely as it is (and fantastic it made it to the Designer Programme), I would've loved to have seen what the Lego designers could've brought to it as an official set.
2015 I believe is in reference to Charles H. Townes 1915-2015, a professor emeritus of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for invention of the laser and subsequently pioneered the use of lasers in astronomy. And maybe there is no scientist figure in the set because the wings represents Charles Townes angel wings. If so, very well thought out. Kudos to Lego.
Great review! I know you were talking about possibly switching to a new camera but I would recommend just sticking with what you’re using, I assume your cell phone. with your cell phone you’re able to get really close to the Lego set while maintaining a decent depth of field, if you switch to any camera with a larger sensor you won’t be able to get shots quite like this, you would at least need to buy a macro lens and at that point you’re pretty much into photography so I would just recommend sticking with the cell phone, it looks great!
I absolutely love this set! The way the dome modularises is so unique. I love all the details within the set although some sections are a little lack luster such as the entrance to the dome. But hey, other than, pretty good. Thanks for the review.
I've just finished building this set and I absolutely loved it. I changed the minifigure pieces around and swapped hair etc. The 1 x 2 tiles I attached to 1x 3 plates so they sit in the stand. Now I've got to try and incorporate my multi coloured spacemen stand .
This is such an amazing set! Fabulous review, Jordan. Love all the detail you included in your review, especially showing how the different mechanisms like the telescope work and the way certain features are built, etc.
It would be really cool if you hang the satellite space thingy or a fly ufo that would gave them a good reason to look at. Over all looks like a fun build👍 you can also use the Lego star wars planet set and have them hanging that would be fun it to those little things that make the build be used in its proper way it would be very funny if there were aliens inside or on top of the deck calling home
I got this one as well, still sealed in the box. But I love the details of this set, especially that you can move the telescope. Maybe I will try to motorize the top but not sure yet. Once I moved out to my new place I will give it a try!
As an astronomer, the stickers of funny posters are accurate, I love this set. As for 2015 I honestly have no clue. The red light brick is also great cause we use red light to prevent light pollution which makes “bad science”
When the creator was 1st building this, I'm sure it was awhile ago during covid when parts were scarce and lead times were forever. Which is probably why he built his own rock panels.
Very nice and the interior has a lot of details to look it. 2015 may be when the designer first thought of this or started building it or finished the first attempt at it.
I love the red brick. Having taken astronomy Ihave been in an observatory and know you work with a red light or with a red filter on your flash light just like you would in a photo dark room.
I think the designer was only allowed to use parts from 2021 as part of the challenge and he changed the dome construction as a result from his original design. It looks amazing. Wish I had ordered this one.
Looks pretty cool. Were they trying to pad out the piece count by making brick-build LURPs and BURPs and the stacks of plates instead of bricks, or was that how it was originally submitted?
the rock panels are very very expensive . they probably wanted to use them and did in the computer model but on seeing how expensive they are they decided to go brick built
It would be great if you actually gave some critical insights when you review vs just showing us all the details. For example, was the build enjoyable? Creative use of pieces? Good storytelling? Good value? What you liked? What you didn’t like? Otherwise, it isn’t really a review and more just a showcase.
I imagine the original design using the rock pieces but those pieces might not have been available for this bricklink designer program, so the designer brickbuilt them so they didn’t have to change a lot…
I'm a little torn on this one. On one hand I love the design, but on the other the whole price per piece sounds a bit shady. The rock formations and the plates are a bit of a red flag. I was thinking maybe the plates would add more detail and the same for the side rock panels but the plates are just stacked on top of each other and the rock formations are exact replicas. 2x4 bricks and rock panels could have been used and still kept the amazing look overall with no problem. Plus cutting down on the overall cost of the build. Not to mention what else could have been replaced in that same way. I'm always going to be intrigued by this and want to get into the bricklink program, but now there's a huge part of me that just wonders if either the builder or bricklink is just doing stuff like this for the largest profit at the cost of the consumer. Maybe I'm over thinking it.
You could use SSP officers as Easter egg in your city(btw for these who don't know SSP Is short for Super Secret Police from first lego Movie from 2014)

In terms of the 'interesting' brick usage - I think they're intentionally upping the brick count using bricks that are cheaper to manufacture and they're then able to charge more for the set. Increasing their margins
The technique the way the dome spins, the dome doors open, the standard brick stacking techniques used for pretty much the whole build... Idk, I was expecting something more complex
I am so iffy on loose elements being included in sets like this. I really dont care for them. I, like you usually keep them removed but would prefer to have them implemented 7:05

Substitution for the rock pieces likely a "last minute" change due to part supply issues they couldn't circumvent in time to release the sets.
This is one of the coolest Lego sets I've seen yet
I think this is the best of the bricklink designer program sets

Looks like an awesome build wish it wasn't such a limited set. Looking forward to seeing which way you decide to place it on the mountain.

Good idea

This set is amazing, it should be more widely released

they need some sodium lamps to really amp it up, lol. i appreciated all the little astronomy details
This set is absolutely amazing! It is, by far, the best Bricklink design set I have ever seen! 👏😁 love it!
Looks great
this has got to be one of the best sets i've ever seen besides the Rivendale & LOTR sets 💕
bro i love your city and videos my city isn't as good as yours but its getting there i wish i could show you it but keep up the good work
Love it❤, but it would be cool if you could extend the telescope. You could make a small house for the staff and attach it to the side😊
Love it. Great details. The water will work great with the water on the platform and waterfall. It will look amazing on the mountain top.
When the creator was 1st building this, I'm sure it was awhile ago during covid when parts were scarce and lead times were forever. Which is probably why he built his own rock panels.
This set is cool`n and I am not fool'n !! Happy 4/1-23 !!
Can you make a video or short of you integrating all the cmfs into the city that would be cool

Very nice and the interior has a lot of details to look it. 2015 may be when the designer first thought of this or started building it or finished the first attempt at it.

Wow! Such a wonderful set!!!
Wow, that observatory build is super awesome 👌🏻
put dark gray mountin piece on the bottom and then transition from grey to brown by puting plants like small trees or leaves
Love the r2d2 modular!
You should ad printed 1 x 4 printed plates down the mountain
Beautiful set, and amazing build, I love it. Wish it was available to order.
Probably plates in stead of bricks for stability. - plates have better clutch-power (you said it was still a bit flimsy)
I've seen other youtubers show off modulars but none who get into detail like Bricksie does it.
i perfer a round dome rather than the mosaic dome.....

That secondary mirror on the main scope is WAY too big 😬. But -- I still lust for this set. It's SO well designed.

I got the Winter Chalet but I feel like i really misjudged this set. Now i need to find it pre owned down the road.
It's nice but my feeling with these MOCs is that many of them are very heavy handed, if you know what I mean

2015 is might be the year this MOC was first time submitted to Lego Ideas…
Maybe that part is a copy righted part from Lego ! and Brinklink didn't want a copy a patted part .
Nice review 😊
I had this set for 1 hour the £200 I made on it was sweet thou..it does look nice but for a theme park like I've got doesn't fit the "vibe"
How can we buy the bricklink models?
Anyone know when next speed champions release is?
Is this a new set
I have seen a one-stud sized minifigure there! Wth!
