  • CenterPoint Energy needed a few holes dug in order to install some new, wider street poles. There was only one problem, there was no way to locate a near by water line. T-Rex provided hydro-excavation to safely create a clean cut hole for line location without damaging the waterline.
Every day, Contractors, Municipalities, and Utilities Providers must excavate for installation of underground facilities, or location of existing pipes, cables and lines for maintenance and repairs. In the past, this usually involved digging by hand (often a slow and tedious process) or with a mechanical excavator, backhoe or similar machine. Hydro Excavation (tex-rex.com/vac...) is a process that utilizes pressurized water to break up and remove the soil via air conveyance (vacuum) into a debris tank, providing an economical and non-destructive means to safely locate utilities and precisely excavate an area.
Founded in 2001, T-Rex is a leader in providing hydro excavation and industrial vacuum services. Using our fleet of the most powerful hydro excavation trucks in the industry, T-Rex provides hydro-excavation services to a range of industries including Industrial Construction(trexservices.co..., Oil & Gas (trexservices.co..., Commercial Construction, Utilities, Municipal, Electrical & Mechanical, Telecommunication, and Land Based Drilling Rigs. Other areas vacuum excavation is used include Foundation Repair, Grease and Grit Trap Cleaning, and Remote Excavation for Elevator Shafts and other hard to reach locations inside buildings, like basements. Our core hydro excavation services are Potholing, Trenching, Tunneling, Line Location, Designation, Tank Cleaning, Subsurface Utility Engineering, Civil Construction, and Emergency Response and we are continually upgrading our fleet, selling older hydro excavation trucks, and replacing them with the newest and most advanced equipment available in order to provide the best hydro excavation services possible. We’ve used t-Rex multiple times.
Only once when working for centerpoint but hundreds of times working for centerpoints contractors.
This is probably the safest way to not damage other utilities. We’ve dug into gas lines water lines and phone lines and not just with an auger.

It is the safest way but digging with a single jet you can cut and damage lines, they should use oscillating tips

This method works well. We use it when necessary due to other utilities close or in the proposed new location of our equipment.

Water pressure is fully variable. Generally speaking we keep the water pressure at around 2800 PSI (for clay soil). We use less pressure for softer ground. As you can see at the end of the video, the process of hydro excavation is non-destructive.

What pressure water? It can't be too high else it would just go through other pipes/services.

Iam in this line of work myself so i can say this is not the way to pothole utilities. Depending on the condition of the pipe and and type of pipe as well as the pressure setting on the hydro jet. It is very possible to blast right through the pipe defeating the purpose of safe escavation, that's why rotating tips and knowing what your Escavating as well as a skilled operator is key these guys are just jetting dirt. Spray and pray if you will.

ashiadee19 there are times when this job will require some labor. For example dragging 100' of flex hose up a hill. In these cases u with usually have help but that depends on the company u apply with. Some like to run one person crews to maximize profit. But typically this is a job that I feel can be done by both man or woman and although I have never met or seen a woman with the companies I've worked for that are operators I do know there are some out there in this field of work
