- Is it possible to beat Hardcore Nuzlocke using only Pokemon species beginning with the letter K? I try a few different games in this video to determine if a Hardcore Nuzlocke is possible.

The Hardcore Nuzlocke rules for this challenge:
1. Only catch the first Pokemon on each route that begins with the letter K.
2. If a Pokemon faints, it must be released.
3. No over-leveling above the gym leader's highest level.
4. No items in battle.
5. Play on Set Mode.

I think K might be possible in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, since Ralts learns Disarming Voice at level 11 in those games. Kirlia, Kadabra, Kecleon, and Koffing should be able to take you to Mossdeep, where Kingler and (if you allow trade evos) Kingdra become available. After beating Groudon/Kyogre, most K pokemon that existed at the time become available through one way or another, making the end of the run much easier.
I would say do Alpha Sapphire just for Kyogre, but Omega Ruby does technically give you one more encounter in Kabutops.
He would probably do so in Omega Ruby because he does not use legendaries.

You could've depleted all your PP against wild Silcoon/Cascoon in the forest in Ruby to beat the Poochyena with Struggle.

In Sword and Shield you can get Ralts and evolve it before the first gym, so it may well be possible there. Also in ORAS Ralts gets Disarming Voice at level 11, and you could deplete its PP to beat Poochyena with Struggle in RSE.

The only issue with doing it in Sword and Shield is that Kirlia stands absolutely no chance. Its stats are abysmal.
You can also get Klink and Krabby before the first gym. And they both evolve into decent Pokémon in the end game. And I’m pretty sure there’s a couple more k mons along the way.
There are 5 pokemon lines you can get in sword and sheild kirlia, karrablast, krabby line, Klink line and kommo-o the rest require the dlc

EDIT: Thank you all for the suggestions! Some of these options I'm shocked I didn't remember (particularly the Struggle strat). Ya'll are clearly much smarter than I am! I'll try this again at some point in the future.

You could also try Sword and Shield since that always has the highest amount of Pokémon in general. As good K Pokémon are desperate to find, even the Crown Tundra DLC is allowed if it means you can get a Pokémon such that you can breed it and get a level 1 Pokémon of a line that eventually has a Pokémon starting with K.
You can get Kabutops, Kadabra, Kangashkhan, Kartana, Keldeo, Kingdra, Krookodile, Kubfu, Kyogre and Kyurem from the DLC.
You can also get Karrablast, Kingler, Kirlia, Klinklang, Koffing, and Kommo-O from the base game.
This is legitimately sad, however, that your best chance of getting a K Nuzlocke is in the godforsaken Sword/Shield and you still only have six Pokémon if you don’t use DLC. This is basically the I Nuzlocke again.
For letters you can’t do, I would love to see more of this. Just explanations on why it’s impossible. You did the best you could have with what you were given tbh
Just use struggle against the pooch to get rid of pp use wild pooches in ruby

I'd definitely see if it's possible within ORAS. The addition of the Fairy typing for Ralts/Kirlia will no-doubt help.
Struggle ralts on ruby and sapphire ia possibpe, i did it, and it actually worked pretty well for me
You can actually get pass through poochyena with a ralts. Just make sure to drain all your PPs before the fight so you're forced to use struggle. You can do it by simply using all your moves on something that can't damage you, like a low-level wurmple in the first route

I like the idea of throwing in some challenges that are actually impossible, it creates suspense because we don’t know if you’re going to beat the challenge until you actually win the game
Feels good to finally be caught up with this series, happy birthday! Like everyone else is saying in the comments, in red/blue/ and yellow, Brock's pokemon don't have any rock moves, but it would still be hard to win with just a kakuna without some serious luck. But another popular suggestion would be to drain Ralt's PP moves and struggle kill the Poochyena

I never check the video length before watching so this was genuinely interesting for me, not knowing that every game was to be impossible!
i feel like flexible level caps for challenges where you're extremely limited feels totally reasonable, especially in the early game (and especially in the gen 7 games where there are points in the trials where you're just getting dogpiled). another really fun video, i'm really enjoying these runs!
My only thought would be the OG pokemon red or blue. The trainers pick random mooves so you might be able to luck out a win vs brock with kakuna. Then kadabra can basically solo the rest of the game. Just a thought, love the videos!

Ruby is possible if you go into the team magma fight using struggle because that can hit dark types, and it’s possible in oras because ralts learns draining kiss
In addition to all the things that’ve been suggested thus far, Kakuna might stand a chance against Falkner in GSC because Flying (Gust) was Physical prior to Gen 4

Well in sapphire/ruby I’m 99% certain that it is possible to get past poochyena. It’s not a favorable or a guarantee method of getting past it with just a ralts but the struggle method and just hope that poochyena keeps going for howls and doesn’t attack you
So, without crunching the numbers too much. Couldn’t you attempt a hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow using only “K” Pokémon? Kakuna, Kingler, Kadabra, Koffing, and Kabutos. Brock’s Pokémon don’t learn any actual rock type moves
Yes but usually only a kakuna to beat gen 1 brock would be a war of attrition... Especially with a level cap
With a level cap probably it would still be nearly impossible, kakuna does no damage to brock’s mon (poison is physical) and he has 5 full heals per mon as well for some reason
@@WorkInProgressX A little late to the party but I wanna share a fun quirk with gen1. With high enough defence and quad resist it is possible for a move in gen1 to do 0 dmg such as a lvl 15 weedle vs lvl 14 onix (If he somehow got through geodude and had his exp capped) these are the damage rolls Lvl 15 Kakuna Poison Sting vs. Lvl 14 Onix: 0-1 (0 - 2.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Possible damage amounts: (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1). if he stayed lvl 14 that 1 would turn into another 0. this is the same for geodude except lower the levels by 1
As for struggle a perfect 15 attack DV (Old IV) would do 2.1 - 4.3% damage, with 0.9 - 1.9% recoil.
With hardcore rules the odds of winning would be astronomically low, maybe a TAS could pull it off with perfect 1/252 miss and crit every turn but thats the only way I ever see it happen without massive over leveling
*Also rolling a 0 counts as a miss/no effect, rather than hitting a 0, which means you cant even poison, even if you somehow got through the 10 full heals

Happy birthday! For Ruby, you could use struggle with ralts. It’s a little time consuming, but I remember seeing a mono psychic run where they did this and it worked out
Yeah it works because struggle doesnt do quarter recoil damage in this gen
If you don’t want to go all the way to Sword/Shield, Struggle with Ralts is your only choice.

Probably not worth having to get through Peony for Kabutops, but Sword + Isle of Armor has the makings of a great team to do the challenge with.

I beat a Hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon Sword and Shield with only Pokemon that begin with K (or Pokemon that evolve into Pokemon that begin with K). I used your rules for this, and allowed Pokemon from the Isle of Armor.
I started with Grookey (it doesn't matter, none of the starters start with K, but Grookey is the only one with a K in it, so that's what I picked).
I used Grookey until gaining access to the Wild Area. Then I spent about 30 minutes looking around in the Rolling Fields for a Ralts (which evolves into Kirlia) because the Fog weather effect can't appear until the postgame. I caught a Ralts in the Rolling Fields and a Krabby at West Lake Axewell, and released my starter Grookey since I don't need it anymore. Then I took the train to the Isle of Armor, and caught a Klefki in the Fields of Honor there (since both Klefki and Abra appeared in the overworld at the same time, I chose Klefki, because I could get Kadabra later).
Then I went back to the mainland of Galar, and did the whole "introduction to the Gym Challenge" thing, before catching a Klink on Route 3. I was able to defeat Bede pretty easily, since I have 2 Steel types, and evolved Ralts into Kirlia before the Gym Battle against Milo. Since Klefki and Klink resist all of Milo's Pokemon's moves (all of them are Normal or Grass-type moves), this Gym Battle wasn't that hard and I got my first badge.
Due to the increased level cap (from 20 to 24), I can now get 3 more encounters on the Isle of Armor. Kadabra in the Soothing Wetlands, Kangaskhan in the Warm-Up Tunnel (which I actually could've gotten before the first Gym because it was at level 17), and Sandile in the Potbottom Desert. That's all the new encounters before Nessa. For this battle, I used a team of Kirlia, Krabby, Klefki, Klink, Kadabra, and Kangaskhan (everyone except Sandile).

I'd say to try black white 2. You get a koffing before the second gym. If you can beat her, then burgh should be easy with his grass/bugs. Then you can get krookodile. Koffing has levitate for the ground gym too.
Also you could just "catch" a krabby in virbank city. The fishing rod is super late game, but it would only give you 3 fully evolved pokemon instead of just 2.
Koffing might be able to do it on its own, but the whirlipede might kill with rollout.
I was going to suggest the Struggle strat, but so many other people have done it already so I'm just going to say: Happy birthday :)

If you wait until after the first gym in B2W2 you can get Koffing and you can definitely beat Roxie with smokescreen. The only other pokemon you would get would be Karrablast, Klinklang, and Krookodile so it would be difficult, but probably possible.
This reminds me of my first playthrough of Pokemon Black. I had a team of only mons whose name started with the letter S. My final team was Serperior, Stoutland, Seismitoad, Sawk, Scolipede and Sigilyph.

(also, could you use struggle with ralts or in platinum use fury cutter with kricketune (I saw a video from chizzy where he almost beat roark with fury cutter and he could have taken the cranidos out with fury cutter but he didn't want to risk the 95% miss chance))

My only way if compensating is to cheat all available encounters into your party at the start, it would be hard af with mons like kirlia, kakuna, Krabby etc, but having all of them at the start may make it possible.

Try Sword and Shield;
All "K" encounters before First Gym (Grass):
- Route 3 = Klink -> Klang -> Klinklang
- Wild Area
- - Rolling Fields = Ralts -> Kirlia
- - West Lake Axewell = Krabby -> Kingler
- - West Lake Axewell = Koffing (raid den)
And eventually, a Kommo-O which is what will carry him other than the Klinklang

Struggle would be a option for that required battle with ralts, it sucks but he only has the one poochyena. Abra could also use it to be a little less useless.
For Ruby, you can get rid of all of Ralts’ PP, and give it an Oran Berry to help get past the grunt

I guess a K Nuzlocke has a strange amount of options: so far you have Gen 1 because Brock does not have Rock moves, Gen 3 because Ralts can Struggle past a Poochyena, ORAS because Ralts learns Disarming Voice at Level 12, and Sword/Shield in general with four encounters before Milo.
It’s far more flexible than an I Nuzlocke which requires Sword/Shield.
No, gen 4 would work too (Infernape)
You may be able to try ORAS, or if you want to stick with RSE, I believe it is possible to get Ralts down to Struggle to beat the Poochyena.

everyone has mentioned struggle strats. this would also allow abra to do some damage as well though depleting teleport pp is kinda a pain.
no matter what in almost all games getting a team thats good is difficult or impossible for the elite 4 and even making it that far before getting a team is difficult.
but struggle would give you a chance to get a little farther in the game.
Maybe original red and blue since Brock has no rock type moves? I liked where the end of the video was going since I’ve done a psychic mono playthrough (non-Nuzlocke) of Ruby and getting my ralts to have no PP against wild Pokémon so I could hit struggle against the poochyena was interesting

And last, you can get ralts in sword/shield before 1st gym or ralts can learn fairy moves in oras for the poochy fight so try there
You can kill the Poochyena with Struggle, people have gone mono psychic runs of that game before. Or you can just do it in ORAS, where you get disarming voice.
oh you know what you could try (before the eshop closes) pokemon dream radar and pokemon black/white 2, you can use it to get a ralts for a k encounter.

Yeah, could potentially exhaust all of Ralts' moves, and use struggle on Poochyena. You could also do this with a Pokemon like Abra. It's not optimal since you would take recoil, so not sure if you could take out Poochyena before it took you out. Maybe if Ralts held an oran berry... if you can even get one. Might need good RNG for the battle. Struggle can crit, but relying on crits isn't necessarily the best strategy, I suppose.
Also, for letters where there are barely any Pokemon available, or it seems impossible, it might be interesting to do some kind of Alternate Language run assuming there is a language where there are Pokémon that start with that letter. For instance, in a German 'k' run in Hoenn, you could use Ludicolo, Kirlia, Breloom, Exploud, Trapinch, Carvanha, Crawdaunt, and possibly others.
You could try to use struggle against the Poochyena. Just waste all your PP against a Silcoon/Cascoon before the fight and you could maybe win against Poochyena
I don't know how hard it would be afterwards though

If you deplete ralts' pp before the fight, you might be able to defeat the trainer with struggle. With recoil it might not be enough, so maybe have 1 or 2 pp on growl before starting, using them,then kill with struggle
