  • CUT TO: City street. Carlo is seated on a stoop with two men. -day
    CARLO (watching a man leave the building)
    This fat slob's still bettin' the Yankees pretty heavy? You tell 'em to stop takin' action on 'em,
    alright?
    (then)
    We lost enough money last week on the game...
    [Sonny's car appears, screeches to a halt. He gets out]
    SONNY (as he throws a sawed-off broom stick at Carlo)
    Carlo, come'ere! -- come'ere!, come'ere!, come'ere!
    (then, after catching him after a short chase and beating him)
    You bastard!
    [Sonny punches and kicks Carlo while bodyguards hold back on-lookers. Carlo
    screams when Sonny bites his knuckles which are clenched to a metal fence. Sonny slams a
    garbage can lid on Carlo's head over and over. The one-sided fight continues until Carlo
    ends up motionless on his back in the downpour of an open fire hydrant that kids were
    playing in.]
    SONNY (exhausted)
    You touch -- my sister again, I'll kill ya.
    [As Sonny begins to walk away, he stops, goes back, and kicks Carlo one last time]

    The way that Carlo, the abusive husband, was portrayed to be running for his life as soon as he saw Sonny was pretty spot on. Abusive spouses, bullies, always run when confronted by someone bigger than themselves. Probably why they picked on whom they perceived as weaker than they are.

      @silrein3036 11 месяцев назад +16

      @@Karynthian If you're saying he was untouchable because Sonny was way stronger than him, I'd agree with you. If you meant by his social status as a high ranking member of the Corleone family, I don't. Though Connie wasn't technically part of the mafia family (that is, working for them), she was still Vito's daughter.
      Yet he still dared to hurt her on daily basis actually (if you take a look at the novel). Connie in the novel is a bit different from the movie because she did complained about Carlo to her father but her father didn't do anything (because he didn't like them gotten married in the first place). Vito is also the one who actually restrained Sonny to do anything when he wanted to beat up Carlo. It was only after this scene that Sonny had the chance to beat Carlo up, so Connie getting abused was actually not news to the Corleones.
      Another point is that Sonny was killed later by Carlo's machinations. Of course, he didn't do it personally (as he is a coward) but he still had a hand in Sonny's death, even if by the bullets of another family. If he had a gun on the day that Sonny beat him up, things could turn up very differently, either by his or Sonny's death

    Despite his hot temper and reckless behaviors, Sonny is true to his family. He loves each single one of them and tries his best to protect them all. From chasing the police away from his sister's wedding to hopping into a car right after hearing that Connie is assaulted by her abusive husband. He's such a protective big brother. I personally love the way he tells his right hand man to make sure the gun is securely implant for his younger brother, Michael because he doesn't want his younger bro to come out with a stick. And, I truly believe that if he could do it himself, he would do. He'd rather take the fall himself.

      I agree with much of what you said, but Sonny was not true to his wife. Everyone knew he was fooling around with Lucy Mancini. Watch Connie's wedding scene again, and pay attention to Sonny's wife. She went from entertaining her girlfriends with hints about Sonny's size to humiliation when she realized he was off with Lucy again. Vito then admonished him for playing this comedy instead of investing time with his family.
      Also, I'm not sure Sonny said "a stick in his hand." I think this was cleaned up from some wording that sounded similar.

    This scene had a darkness to it when you realize Carlo was purposely beating Connie to trap Sonny. It’s implied Sonny was not ok with how Carlo betrayed him by beating Connie, especially since Sonny felt guilty for it since he introduced Connie to him. So Carlo used that to lure Sonny into a trap & then kill him. Carlo was trying to move up the ladder in the family but Michael stopped him by having him executed

      @madboy1105 yes. He had his girlfriend call Connie, knowing she'd call Sonny and that Sonny would have to use that particular tollbooth. More importantly from Michael's POV, he sold out the family to avenge a slight and by facilitating Sonny's death, forced Michael into the role of his father's successor, something he tried desperately to avoid. Years ago I read the novel the Godfather and we get more insight into Carlo Rizzi. Carlo's marriage to connie was nothing more to him than an ambitious business move to have access to Vito and a bigger and better seat Corleone table. He was a Northern Italian, and with his blond hair and blue eyes naturally believed he was better than his Southern Italian wife and the entire Corleone family. It was heavily hinted in the books the hidden bias and colourism between northern Italy regarding southern Italians, who are looked down on with their darker skin and darker hair. When those gates were not instantly opened to him he was resentful and turned his frustrations on his wife.
    This topic was also mentioned in the 'sopranos' regarding Meadow when a family member mentioned they were shocked at how how 'dark skinned' she was when she was born, considering Carmela had blond hair and blue eyes.

      Its actually quite sad that having lighter features is looked at as more appealing in the world. IIRC, even in Asian cultures its looked at as being exotic. Some idols in S Korea even bleach their skin and try to be skinny as possible.

    • @bobbyscalchi4013
      @bobbyscalchi4013 2 месяца назад

      @NRV0 I beg to differ it could go either way depending on the culture, influence, or mindset. Tall dark and handsome and the showing of a healthy colorful tan is desired on one hand, then amongst the affluent pastey porcelain alabaster white is desired. Then you have political culture. Pop culture. Racial/tribal culture/time frame, etc. A century and a half ago. Sun tanning was frowned upon by most of American and European cultures. The farmers tan was considered a trait of the peasants. Now it's considered healthy, active and on holiday or vacation. Despite having disease from his injuries as a contributing factor. I think Michael Jackson cosmetically bleached his skin in addition and in some form denied his black roots despite being very cute as a kid and handsome as an adolescence.

That’s why I prefer the soprano version of this, where Tony’s sister wacks the abuser herself right after the first slap. So the first slap was the last slap 😃That would have been me. Any man who thinks that he can put his hands on me is dead, there and then. The POS should have been wacked right there and then. James Caan and Talia Shire remained lifelong friends after this film, of course. In a CBS interview she said, with Caan seated there next to her, laughing, "You're still my brother.." She told another great story about the scene previously, where Carlo is getting ready to go out, and Connie has cooked dinner for him. They get into a fight and she starts pulling the crockery off the shelves, and breaking it. Talia Shire said, "I was running around barefoot, not all that stuff broke the way it was supposed to, so I was crunching on broken glass.." Wonderful brave lady to do that.. RIP James Caan...

      That wasn't justice. Justice doesn't bite people's hands. Mike having Carlo executed after hearing his confession was justice.

    I mean, hitting scenes can be "hit" and miss in movies (see what I did there🤣) in that it can be hard sometimes to make them look realistic when you're obviously not trying to have actors really beat each other black and blue. But this actually did look incredibly realistic! Well done!!! Just another reason why this movie is so amazing🤩
