Setting a sixteen foot field gate! 29 05 21

- I was given this job by Farmer P senior AKA My father. The old 12' gate was too narrow to accommodate the combine, and both posts were rotten as well, so we are removing the old 12' and fitting a new 16' field gate.
And having a few laughs while we are at it.

Does Martin by any chance have a background in municipal work? 😅
He has been with me for over a quarter of a century, which makes him part of the family, and able to get away with it. 😄👍🏼
Mr.P gets right in there with his workers and mixes it up great video.
Top Tip - Toolstation sell extra length hinges.
Down here in Kent the ground can move quite a bit, and having long hinges means you can always adjust more than standard hinges if needed.
Another job well done and the 'gaffer' turned up that's what your staff get paid for, one to hold the camera and the other to hold the level just in case it gets squashed with the mini digger. Was biskit on rabbit watch ?? was that the funky farmer's silage going back to the farm ??
Great 👍 job mr. P. Nice 👍 to see the boys helping you with the gate 🚜🚜👍👍👌👌🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧🤞🤞👩🌾👩🌾a lot of bull
Watching you and Mikey mixing in that barrow, it was like "to you, to me" :)
We all know real concrete mixers have lister engines
We used to have one Patrick, A bit harder to start a than the electric Belle though. 😄
Nothing like having 2 dog's and barking yourself is it Ian lol, but it's good to see you can still run rings around the young un's.
Farmer P wins the shovelling competition. .... there's not many people who can out perform someone who has lived on a farm their whole life.
I could give him a good run for his money as worked on building sites all my working life
That is the first time I seen it done like that. We would always wet the concrete before we put in the hole. ( and then have a barrow and shovel to wash out) . You got a nice finish to the concrete round the post. (a lot nicer than we would leave a post)
There is only one thing Ian, would it not be an idea to load the barrow last. Use it to load other things first. Someone had to make three trips loading the cement were the barrow would have done it in one
You definitely get your moneys worth out of the tree team! 😂
As they say “wanting a job done right do it yourself”. Have you heard how Matty is doing being a dairy farmer?
No I have heard nothing from Matthew.
Not yet
Lol thought it was a adult channel with all juniors heavy breathing 😂
Right in my ear hole it was, I was quite intimidated. 😄😬
good team work Farmer P you should try one of them post hole augers for the machine
I don’t have the spare 3k to buy one 😬🙂
Was it an optical illusion ? the shutting post did not look plumb /
Both posts were level, but the gate hinges were only eyed in until I corrected them later. 🙂👍🏼
Thank you for this instructional video... I just have one question regarding how much clearance I should leave from the bottom of the gate to the ground? I am doing this by myself as a female so wish me luck but could definitely do with any extra hints or tips, if you have any, lol🙈
I set my gates low on purpose to stop walkers dogs going under them. 6" to 10" clearance should be adequate, just remember things like snow. If its a gate you use a lot and get snow, set them a bit higher to allow for the winter months. You wont need luck. Brains will often outdo brawn. 🙂👍
@@FarmerP Thank you so much for the advice, it's very much appreciated😊
Interesting video. Though it would be nice to see some authentic gates made of wood being used on farm like they used in the past .
I don’t use wooden gates any more, except up around the house. I prefer steel, they last a lifetime and are more secure.
LQQK at you two go....mixie mixie !!!! Swing dem schubbles!
I always look forward to your uploads.. Thank you for bringing us along.. EDIT: we have many kinds mortar mix we have Ready Mix that's got the aggregate of the size for the job your doing.. and we got different size Aggregate and Ready Mix.. just take the bag poured in the hole add the water and it sets up and it works wonderful.. do y'all have that there? And your teaching the guys a few lessons.. In just like you I know a little of everything..my dad taught me..
Yes we can buy post mix etc but it’s about 3x the cost of mixing our own. And I’m too tight to let a bit of graft make me spend more than I need to. 😄👍🏼
@@FarmerP oh ok.. I didnt know.. Yes I'm like you I try and save every bit I can too.
Met a guy in a Saigon bar couple of months back, in conversation he told me he supplies B&Q with bagged cement products. His plant is just down the road from me and that's 40 klicks from Saigon. I'm amazed he can supply it cheaper than a local UK firm.
They certainly don't make wheelbarrow's like they use too. 🙄 Starting to wonder you should start calling Martin's new name ? Teapot 🤔👍
Nice video Farmer P. I'm sure your staff was having a good laugh watching you work. 👍😃
Urgent!
Competent, uninhibited initiative utilising hands desperately required. Immediate start available.
When I got the first jab, they told me to make sure I worked that arm muscle. I dug a trench with a pick axe. It worked. My arm felt fine (my lower back, I won’t say).
Great job, Ian.
Team work!!!
Your swinging days may be nearly over, mate, but that gate has many, many years
of life left in it.
Great video as always. FarmerP you are a get it done worker . Hoping your fathers back is doing better.
A good job, but why did u not use rough sand with the cement and slightly wet it before putting it around the post.We irish would also put some lumps of field/ditch stones in around the post through the concrete to secure it in place while tapping the concrete in all around it.Then our gate posts are guaranteed to withstand a lot more weight from the weight of the hanging gate. etc.At the same time, Im sure yr gate aint going to go anywhere anytime soon.lol...Keep up those great videos Ian
Another great video has always Ian farmer p and Biskit 👍
Ps drivers side brake light is a lot dimmer than the other side 👍💡
look like you doing much of the work, just like some the people works for me i most of the time doing the work
I hope the gate posts skills are better than your roofing skills only joking
Good video again interesting work ethic your dad in his buggy watching and talking to Martin other tree team member doing the filming while you do most of the work. Would it make sense to put the cement in the barrow and wheel it over to the land rover instead of carrying them or was that one of your things to catch us
You always need a supervisor or a (helt and safeadey ) man on the job🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Better to put water in the the hole first, they add your concrete mix, seems to set quicker and stronger 💪
great video. very useful. I shall keep it for when I need to put in a 16 ft gate! 😄
And biskit sees that is going the right way. Whole was to deep biskit helped by filling it a bit up. The tree generations working to gether. Dad grandad greatgrandad. Ow and mister martin looked and thought this is right.
Proper geezer video ! Very amusing 💪💪💪
Another great insight into the world of farmer p! 👏🏻🎉
Good Thursday evening to you sir
You've gotta show em the Boss knows what he's doing from time to time.At least they dug the first hole by hand though which one of them?😉🤗
Post fix 🤣👍
Farmer p don't want to sound like a know it all but I do fencing for a living... If you get a old 20 gallon dug and a wisk for plaster on the end of a drill you can mix concrete without the back braking labor........ Just saying
Excellent - very educational!
evening ian, nice content again cheers.Interesting video.
Relying on some capillary reaction nice !!
Hello Ian, do you know why we don't have thumb's on diggers in the UK, it would make so many jobs go faster and easier. Even a non hydraulic one would be helpful for pulling or holding logs for cutting up. In europe and the USA they almost come as standard.
A thumb would be useful for sure.
evening ian,nice content again cheers.
Great video again
Ian! just a thought wouldt like a conversation .. with you and youre dad over farming .. from the the past to now a days! wouldt like to heare.... as a learn curve! .. it past fast! as you know!!
im very interested in that .. love to here the old folks in farming over in Holland! .. a same over in England! there knolidge! is important! and vannice so fast!
That exhale mixed with a sigh and bugger is one of the most relatable things I’ve ever heard haha
It’s real life. 😄😄
Yes I watch it twice.. This was a good video.. THE 5 DISLIKES ARE JUST PEOPLE THAT HATE LIFE..
I think they dislike me more.. But that’s their problem, not mine 😄
Naw they just hate life and their selves.. We all thank the world of you.. But look at the likes they out weight the dislikes
Great vid Ian, who needs a mixer when you can mix like that, I see mikey is still learning but I have to give first prize to Martin for knowing how to look busy when anyone mentions there’s work to do, I thought the level was stuck to his hand 😂😂😂
😄👍🏼
almost 30 minutes and actually still too short haha. I can literally watch you guys at work for hours. nice interplay between the three of you.
a question : does your landrover only tip it backwards or can it tip 3 sides ?
thanks for the video again Ian
Only tips backwards 🙂👍🏼
Great job 👍 tree team loved it watching you do some work😂make sure it fixed on well had two road side gate's disappear last year 🤬
16’ is an odd size, so if they pinch it they will need a new post as well. 😄
But there's a reason you put the water with the mix and not just throw it on top hoping the mix won't soak up all the water before the bottom , Oh well Pulling a Pullen again =-P
It’s slower to set all through than a wet mix for sure, but within a day it’s still strong enough to hang a big gate, and within a month it will be as hard as a conventional wet mix. Pushing the bar in 18” helps get the air out and water in as well 🙂
Like others on here never ever put a dry mix into the strainer hole then wet it 🙄😳always mixed it wet then added it 💪 nice to see the repartee between u all 👍 hope ur mum is doin well 👍
I only got to see mum once this week Bob, I had my second Covid jab on Thursday, then spent all day Friday with a mega hangover 🤕 we normally put a half bucket of water down the hole first as well so it wets from the bottom up too, but this hole was slowly filling itself anyway so we didn’t bother this time. Most of my gate posts are firmed in like this, it takes a bit longer to get a truly hard concrete but so far I have had no failures. 🙂👍🏼
What a good one abbi make my day
Always nice to see the teamwork! Sooner or later it won’t just be the tree team, it will be the all round gardener team 😂😂😂😂
I've always liked to use type one and cement to set metal gateposts. A slightly damp mix and tamped into the hole.
Interesting to see how other people do it.
I am guessing these fields will be joining the arable rotation.
The two small parcels of grass won’t, but this new gate will give us much better access to all our existing arable grounds on that side of the road. 🙂👍🏼
Love the banter between you and the tree team. Makes the job go quicker.
True 😄👍🏼
it's great to have a bit of banter with the tree team my favourite is martin he is so dry when he talks
Oh, you have no idea.... 😄👍🏼👍🏼
How many "men" does it take toerct a gate post ?????
Only one, but the company was fun 😄
Your engine impressions were uncanny.
I thought I demonstrated the reliability of the China chuggers quite well 😄
just found this page and i love it
Thank you. Welcome to the funny farm 😄😄
With out sounding like a light geek, when you backed up to the trailer… your drivers brake light was duller than the other side… possibly a bulb in the wrong way round 🤷🏻♂️
The old dog is wise enough to let the younger pup get on with it. 😄
@@FarmerP and with that… I’ll say no more 😂😂.. hope ya keeping well Ian.. 👍🏻
@@TheWebby1982
I have no idea why that answer attached to your question? 😄
One of my brake lights has a poor (dirty) Earth 🙂👍🏼
@@FarmerP hahaha I thort you were teaching me some wise words or something 😂😂🤣
