This man knows what he's doing, no BS acting going on here, it's a real world job with real life old windows. I've been there done that many times. I'd hire him in a minute !
Well, you are a clever clogs, and I love your voice...Thank you for easy, straight to the point, no nonsense video, unhindered by raucous music and unnecessary details. It's a great help, and you're a star.
This video is still providing helpful tips and how-to's. Thank you very much. Is the process the same for steel windows? I like the tip about painting first.
Hi Don. I have two of those types of putty knife. Is the use of the straight edge vs curved just personal choice or is there another reason? Hard to find vids with that style or I'm putting in the wrong information! Cheers Ian
AN EXCELLENT VIDEO BUT! WHEN ITS ME THATS GOING TO DIY..PUTTING PUTTY ON THE SHED WINDOWS I'LL HAVE TO WATCH THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN TIL I GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP BY PUTTING THIS FANTASTIC VIDEO ON HERE.
Hi, advice please from all the experienced painters on here. Can I use Gloss undercoat for this job. Am in the UK and use gloss for external wood. On my own now and need to learn all the jobs that were done by partner who passed away. I have numerous frames to sort out here. Thank you in advance.
Hi Jane, no, one doesn't use a gloss to undercoat. You need to use an undercoat paint for the undercoat and then 2 topcoats. The undercoat bonds firmly to the wood and creates a good key for the topcoat to stick to. the topcoat looks lovely and forms a good protective covering for the wood. Topcoats have various levels of sheen and gloss is a level of sheen - or 'shinyness'. Go down to your local paint shop and speak to them there, they generally have good advice. And then watch my video again until the information is clear and watch some other videos on RUclips to get some more info. Don Morris
Nicely done and thoroughly explained, would love to see what he does with Nu-Glaze. No waiting period, no maintenance, no painting afterwards and looks lovely as well. Putty has been a maintenance issue for more than 400 years!
No. A primer and an undercoat are two different things. First you prime a surface and then you apply an undercoat. An undercoat sticks very well to a primer and will act like velcro to the topcoat, improving adhesion. Some primers contain an undercoat, so you'll only need to apply one coat which is easier and you'll use less paint (so cheaper). It's best to speak to someone at your local paint shop. I don't know which country you're in - products vary from country to country.
You do not have to seal the underground with a coat. You can use linsee oil to soak the wood with before you apply the putty. When you use linseed oil based colors (just mix linseed oil with titanoxid) you will get a color, that does not exfoliate and is waterproof. It can easyly be overpainted after the years.
Yeah of course a primer is needed first in order to stop the wood soaking the oil from the putty drying it out from underneath leading to it eventually cracking and recessing from the glass letting water rot the frame.
Has tube putty made it to your shores?; you can use a caulking gun, the putty does not have to be mixed, and you may reduce the amount of smoothing required. You can also use some types of paintable caulks instead of putty to get faster dry/cure, rain-resistance, or cold-weather work times depending one where you live.
Hi Mark, thanks for the info, I haven't seen tube putty, but then again I haven't done a window putty job for at least 5 years. It sounds like a great idea, especially if I can cut out the kneading. I'll have a look online and in the stores, thanks for passing along the information, kind regards, Don.
Im short of 70 i can rember do this work on steel windows in extremely cold weather. The putty was like a brick from the cold. You'd have to warm each handfull to soften between yiur hands...jasus we could hardly warm ourselves...i was 15 😊
I'm just thinking over painting the wood beforehand: I have long since ceased to use undercoat paints, as they are usually of a lower quality than the top coat paints, and allow the top coat to eventually release from the substrate. So, I am going to try some dilute exterior PVA (non-soluble when dry) which soaks right into the wood, & see how that works. With metal frames, I will clean them thoroughly with a tapered rotary wire brush, vac out the dust, and put the putty straight onto the metal frame. I am mulling over using a primer first, depending on what I have in my workshop. Nice vid anyway, thanks.
Metal should certainly be painted first. An 2 pot epoxy primer would be the best for metal and is used in the marine industry. I use marine products and aproaches on houses as well. Old houses, renovation projects. More expensive yes. But sooo much better.
Faith Jasinski Water based enamel if painting over previously water based painted surface. If the surface was previously painted with oil, use a universal primer and the 2 topcoats of water based enamel.
Guys ! Also.... Spit on your hands or use a little water and Knead the all the putty in the pot as averything in there ois balanced and should be incorporated for the perfect mix. This also makes the putty warmer and easier to use with a knie when smoothing
Wow. this was like watching a David Attenborough wildlife documentary but I learned everything I needed to know!

Just a tip from a 27 year painter: wet both sides of your putty knife with water or saliva, and press down firmly! You’re welcome
This is why I love reading comments even though the video might not be as comprehensive as it should be. 😃👍👍👍
Lol thanks first time puttying and painting windows so will try that lol
Is that to stop the putty from sticking to the knife as you draw the knife along it?
My missus does the same thing with me bits n pieces 😂
Don't use water or saliva like this chap says. Instead, spread a small amount of cooking oil on both sides of the putty knife.
Thanks mate, simple short video with minimum waffle that tells one all they need to know.
Call out to the man doing all the hard work - great job.

Thanks for a practical approach rather than a complete reputtying. Your approach fits my real world circumstances. Good video all round.
Excellent! Straightforward, clear advice, which encourages me to get on with the job. Thank you, very helpful.
Thanks Wendy
This vid helped me to replace a pane with ease. Excellent stuff!
Wow! I can do this before we paint our house! Not as difficult as I imagined.
This video has given me confidence to tackle my windows and replace the putty
This video is still providing helpful tips and how-to's. Thank you very much. Is the process the same for steel windows? I like the tip about painting first.
I need to know, too, whether to glaze on metal or prime first.
Thanks for the advice and giving me confidence. Great work by that man! Easy to follow

What is an undercoat? Is it just plain, simple paint or is it a special application for windows before putty is put on?
Primer.
A good exterior oil primer is what I recommend. (33 yrs in the business)
Primer is initial coat on bare exposed wood usually two coats then undercoat then gloss coat but only primer under putty.
David Attenborough talking through a good putty job! 🤣
Clear and useful information. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻

How many years before the silicone caulk starts to fail though? Or cause the wood to start to rot?
Maintenance isn't an issue.
Things have useful lifespans 🤷♂️
What do you mean by "universal undercoat"? Are you referring to primer?
No. A primer and an undercoat are two different things. First you prime a surface and then you apply an undercoat. An undercoat sticks very well to a primer and will act like velcro to the topcoat, improving adhesion. can you use the same paint you paint the window frames with instead of the universal undercoat?
No
So if I have wooden windows that are not painted, I obviously can't use a primer - will the linseed oil do instead?
Yes.
Good. clear and concise. use a sash brush.
Brilliant video. Thank you 👍👍👍👍
That's very kind of you 'Mona', much appreciated, thank you, have a lovely Easter

goethe528 You are correct, traditionaly lindseed oil was used as a primer, this video seems to give a reasonable idea to get most people out of trouble.
for priming you can use shellack knotting to speed the job up a bit
Yeah of course a primer is needed first in order to stop the wood soaking the oil from the putty drying it out from underneath leading to it eventually cracking and recessing from the glass letting water rot the frame.
Or you can use laytex and not have to worry about that part at all.
Keep a pail of water handy to get the putty super-smooth at the end. Just brush a bit on before your final passes with the knife. 👍
Terps. Not water
Thank you so much for this video. Show me and I can do it! wahooooo!!!!
Lovely well articulated video, your voice is like velvet 🤣
The world is a beautiful place when people show the kindness that you have just shown Jamie. Thank you.
What is universal undercoat called in the States? Is this primer?
Yes
Great video, thanks, really helped me out.

if you cant find a putty knife don't worry, a good old knife with rounded edge will do the work
I have an old butter knife that works wonders.

@@DeanLangley Good point. But nowadays, I mostly use water based paints inc gloss. They are surprisingly good & don't yellow with age - so far anyway.
What happens if it rains in between puttying and repainting?
No problem, just make sure surfaces to be painted are dry when painting.
Rain won't penetrate oil in the putty
Useful information. Thank you. 👍
What kind of putty is that? which brand?
I don't remember Lucas, It was just bought from the Hardware store and was oil based.

Don't you have to sand it down after it drys?
No
What. Kind paint can u use outside window

Once the putty has been applied brush over with 'whiting' afterwards
That is really lekker mate, thanks!
Excellent
Thanks!

That's just insulting
Thank you
Thanks! Just what I wanted to know.
I tried this earlier.. it did not go well...
Tools to install window panes
Cool, man.
After painting the window, it can never open again.
Thin the paint used or do bottom first then close when dry then do top and close when dry.

I didn't know it was putty I thought it was wood so I put wood filler 💀 oh well looks good enough

Hi ~ It's a putty knife ! ~ Widely available ~ Have a look on Ebay !
There’s something eerily colonial about this. But thanks for sharing.
you're kidding me, clean that old stuff out and do the job right.
that would take 2 days instead of 2 hours -- not worth it.
