    Dude! I'm surprised that anyone else was asking this same question. Thanks for posting this vid.
    I haven't even bought my Ekar groupo yet but, I know I need a bigger front ring. 48 would be nicer with 9-44 cogset. The build is for a gravel steel frame touring setup. My setup for the last 12 years has been a triple 30/36/53 11-30 10sp. I guess, I'm gonna have to get to a bike shop and ride any 44T-10t drivetrain to see what it feels like.
    Buggers to Campy! Buggers. on me; I won't use anything else, but I may not get Ekar now.

    I’m appreciate the video and Qs & As about running a Flattop chain to open up more ring options. I’m making that move too, as I was never keen on being locked into the Ekar crank. I had the group sitting ready to install for almost a year, glad I pulled the chute on the crank thanks to great info like this. It’s crazy how hard it is to access dimensions of all the current chains… I have a pile of AB oval rings, and it’s great to know I can keep rolling without all kinds of hassle.

    Had this issue with my raceface narrow wide chainring - took a dremel tool to it, removed material from the inside of the wide teeth and everything is cool now. Was not a new chainring - probably had a thousand or so miles on it so it already had some wear.

      I’ve got about 75 miles on and so far working great, sounded a little crunchy for the first couple of miles, now running smooth. I did email with Absolute Black and they said they do not have a chainring for Ekar “at this time” Would love to roll an oval ring on this thing

    I would be interested to see the Rotor 1x13 components like cassette, chain, and cranks be tested with Ekar's and vice-versa. Was reminded about Rotor's foray in 1x13 and wondered if they can also be operated with Ekar's component.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Год назад +1

      Hi Kelvin, they will not be compatible. Rotor 13 speed has the same spacing as the old 11 speed and mtb 12 speed cassettes, that is why a special hub is needed to run their 13th cog. Ekar has much tighter spacing between the cogs than the rotor. I actually had a Rotor 1x13 mtb set up and the spacing was huge compared to the Ekar. The only part I have found to work ok with Ekar is the SRAM flat top chain and it isn't perfect when you encounter mud.

    I know that the ekar chain doesn't even work with normal (not narrow-wide) TA-specialties "Horus" or stronglight CT2 chainrings. In 30 years of cycling I've never seen a chain that doesn't fit a standard chainring before.😕
    Just for fun I tried it on a new blackspire snaggletooth chainring I have lying about. The ekar chain *does* seem to work with that, which I find quite surprising (because it looks thicker overall)😲. But it's a very... how should I say... a ver snug fit, not too tight exactly, just there is *zero* side-to-side play. It's like they were made for each other. The tolerances must be _amazingly_ close. Not sure how it works in practise at the extreme ends of the cassette though. I'm going to try it, so I might do a video on it if it works.

    I'd like to see you revisit this with the various chains on an Ekar cassette. We've heard the flattop chain should work, but I've never seen that.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  2 года назад +3

      Hi Aaron, I've been running the flat top on the Ekar cassette for about 7 months now with no issues at all. According to Ratio tech, since the rollers are a bit taller on the flat top, it maybe more prone to skipping in muddy conditions but I have not had any issues yet with muddy conditions. I have two other guys who have been using the flat top on the Ekar cassette for much longer than me with great success.

    Did you try to wrap the whole ring (or at least 50%) with actual chain? I had a problem with Chinese 38T ring that could fit few links (like in your example) but could not wrap the chain around enough to make it work on the bike

    Anyone using a 13 speed Ekar chain on a 12 speed Chorus/Record/Super Record groupset?

  • @survivalist13
    @survivalist13 2 года назад

    I'm am just struggling with this problem as I want to run either a 32 or 34 tooth chainring. Current plan is to machine down a 12 speed chainring however this is much easier if it is only the fat teeth that need thinning. Do you know if all the absolute black rings have thin enough thin teeth to work?

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  2 года назад +1

      I had to actually just take a little off the absolute back smaller teeth as well. I am going to do an updated video but honestly what I would do is just use a sram flat top chain. Same width on the outside as the Ekar 13 chain but slightly larger in the middle. Works perfect. I have heard from 2 others who have used it for over a year with no issues.

      @@BlackWaterCyclist What have the "two others" said about cassette wear and mis-shifts? (I'm thinking that even though the width fits, the roller depth may be different, leading to premature wear of the cassette).

      The Ratio Ring mentioned in the video comes in a 34T. I'm going to do Praxis Zayante armset, Praxis spider 110-bcd 5-bolt, and the Ratio ring 38t to get shorter crank arms than Ekar makes (160). Everything looks like it should work, but haven't tried it yet.

      I just used a regular chain tool and my chain came with a quick connect master link. Do not buy the tool. A regular chain tool will work.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Год назад

      I actually remember I just rotated the link to make the chain into a "V" and put the link into the regular chain tool without using the chain guides that are too wide for the Ekar chain. I hope that makes sense.

      I just ordered Ratio chainrings 5 arm BCD 110 made for Ekar 13s to mount onto a Rotor 5 arm "direct mount" spider onto the Rotor "2InPower" road crank. This will go into my 3T Exploro Racemax running Ekar and the BB is "386 evo" which is a pressfit shell 86.5 mm wide that can use either Ekar cups for Ekar crank or Rotor thread-together bb386 30mm spindle BB. BBInfinite and Wheels Manufacturing also make similar thread-together press-fit bb for various axle sizes.
