Basement Makeover: From Dated & Dull To Entertaining-Friendly!

- In this must-see before and after, designer Karin Bennett overhauled a young family's unusable basement and transformed it into the ultimate hangout. The once cold and drafty space was sinking due to structural complications, so after a four-month re-construction, it was ready for a designer's touch. See how a large sectional, stylish storage (made out of budget-friendly melamine) and black shiplap walls add interest to the TV area, while navy blue cabinetry and a spacious island in the kitchen area make hosting family and friends a breeze. Karin added a hardworking mudroom with a custom loft door and updated the bathroom with a seamless tiled shower. Who says basements can't be ultra-cool?

I always find basement makeovers the most interesting because they've so difficult to pull off. There's typically low ceilings and little natural light. This looks nice but I would have loved to have seen it before the repairs wrecked the budget.
It was unfortunate running into these structural issues. We are so happy with the overall design even after sacrificing some of the overall budget. Thank you!
Now this designer I like. She put function at the top of the list and made every dime count. Addressing a sinking foundation is costly and eats up a budget quickly. The provisions were tastefully done.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
What a gorgeous space
Thank you so much!!
What a brilliant interior design space you've created :) Well done House & Home xoxo

Where’s the table from??!!
Hi there, I really like the slide door, where did you buy it? Is it custom made? Thanks!
Love the dining chairs!!..can you share where you got them?
A sinking foundation plus a renovation. I wonder how much that basement cost.
It was an investment but the home is now solid and the clients can have confidence moving forward that their home structurally sound.
My dream makeover
Mine too!!
whoa. how expensive was it to shore up the foundation???
Probably upward cost of $10000
You should budget $50-100 per sq. ft for underpinning or foundation work.
Do they choose clients based on the dog breed. I seear its the same dog everytime 🤣🐶
Haha!! That's a good point!! I promise, different families, different dogs ;)
They borrow the same doggo for the videos.
I hope there is a program for House Renovation for free ❤️😍
Love!
Wow!
what kind of a basement is that?
I think it’s called a “walk out”
It's a walk out where the basement has the ability to walk out to the backyard. It happens when a home is angled down from the front to the back of the house allowing you to "walk out" to the outside.
What is the wall paint color ?
Why not leave the window in the shower with privacy glass?
What colour walls would you recomend to go with a magnolia kitchen doors in a small open area that has little day light, please
I don't know what Magnolia kitchen doors are...
What breed is the dog?
Love the dog....
and the makeover by the way! Haha : )
this comment is pretty old, but i believe that is a wheaten terrier!
@@natasharobinson2886 thank you! I had to refresh my mind and check the video again, : )
I love the renovation but I hate the couch color. Something deeper would have added to the richness of the room. Really great makeover.
👍🏻😉

1:50 These cabinets are Melanie 💁🏻♀️💅🏻
3:50 she didn’t have to sacriface 😑
where is the artwork from?
It's from my trade supplier, not retail.
So you ripped up the basement foundation/floor; why didn’t you put in a heated floor?
Jocelyn Doucette They probably couldn’t afford it after they had to rip out the whole foundation and re-pour it ! She said “wasn’t in the budget anymore” .
I'm curious as to how much more it would have cost to lower the floor another foot.
Where do they Cook?
I imagine this is just the chill out area, and there's a full kitchen on the next level
no stove or burners for everyday cooking?
It's a basement bar, not their kitchen. It's for preparing popcorn and snacks for football night or a movie party.
Clearly they’re NOT Italians otherwise there would be one that’s state of the art!! 😁👍
Anyone from Burlington like me?
I am a carpenter from Burlington.
I am!
😍👍🏻
TV is a bit small for a famliy movie space, and too high on the wall, on those tall built-ins. Should just sit on top, or float very close to the counter.
Bar fridge swings open the wrong way, probably an easy fix.
I recognize some of that furniture, and I live in the same city... Hmm...
No matter what u’ve done, the ceiling is so low that it won’t be comfortable to live in. Why has to have basement in North America!?
It's obviously only for entertainment - movies, gaming, cards. The snug feel can actually be nice for lounging and watching movies or gaming. And the kitchenette & cards table are in such a light & bright place, w/ the door & windows making the space feel bigger, that I don't think you'd feel oppressed by the low ceiling.
And it's a safe place for some natural distaster
$$$$🤑🤑🤑🤑
This one is not my favourite 😏
