  • In this video we convert a Revell 747-8 kit #RMG3891 into an Austin Powers psychedelic style exterior 747 using images from the movies. This involves creating custom templates and masks to create the patterns using measurements of the model & illustrations, the Photoscape X software program, and enlargements of movie screen shots to guide airbrushing similar designs on the model using Vallejo paints.

    I last built a 1/144 scale model back in the 1980s when I did a few Airfix airliners. Enjoyed them as I recall but wow, kits in this scale have seriously improved (it has been nearly 40 years!)

    Max, I love your channel and I hope you don't quit. I intend to start my own modelling channel soon and if I was to end up with 0.1% of your subscriber numbers I'll be delighted (and frankly, dumbfounded).
    Regarding the amount of chat/audio in your vids - definitely keep up the chat and personal photos. When you tell us of your experiences with these planes in the Air Force it gives a unique perspective that other channels don't have and it's great, really informative stuff. Audiowise, you have the only channel where I thought the "headset mic" suited as it gave a sort of "pilot talking over the radio" effect that seemed to add to the vibe! But whatever mic you use, just keep making these videos! You have been a great help to me in my fledgling modelling efforts.

    That's a nice one. For the future, if you ever do something similar... If you really want the colors to pop, first do a gloss base coat. Then silver or chrome, then do the main paint over that using inks. This way, as they're translucent, you get a really popping and if wanted a color shifting look. If you use acrylic inks you can use any acrylic mediums you might normally use.... Thinners, etc. This is something I've learned watching miniature painters.

    Sometimes you just need to do one "wacky." Turned out nicely.
    My bro, who only builds airliners put me on to something for white-painted equipment: Prime with Testors rattle can silver. The hard part is letting it go on "blotchy." It will preshade with gunmetal. Then, when your white paint goes on (too thin as it usually does) you are not "fighting black" but "covering metal." Just 2¢ for you to spend, if you care to.

    Well Tom, that was different! Let me make a wild guess and say this was the most difficult, time-consuming build you’ve ever done, right? Yet there are those viewers who chose to look at this as some type of failure on your part. I think it’s a failure on their part.
    WHAT you built may not catch my fancy, but HOW you built it is ALWAYS helpful to watch. I love to build airplanes. But there are plenty of aircraft models that I’ll never buy: wrong era, wrong Country, ugly-looking a/c, etc. That’s all on me.
    But you chose to make something outside your comfort zone. Because how else are you going to get better? Sure, building 50, P-51 Mustangs will teach you a few modeling skills (we hope!) but building 50 different WWII aircraft will teach you a LOT more; about modeling, about aircraft building and design, about WWII.
    And when it comes down to it, that is why I model; to learn stuff.
    To those complainers: If you want to critique how I built something, then thank you for helping me become a better modeler (constructive criticism); but to say something is a fail simply because you don’t like it, well you missed the point.
    Sorry guys. This man spends his time and money (a lot of both) to help US get better. Appreciate that. I do.
    Thanks Tom. Keep working on it!
    PS who did the background “rain” sounds? That’s always a nice relaxing touch!
    PSS My guess on number of windows: 26, 392,476?

      @MaxAfterburner  4 года назад

      Thanks for the very kind comments Thom Ream, this build was as you say 😮! The rain is just from a miscellaneous track and you only missed the window count by a couple! 😊

    When the masking tape cost more than the model or even the paint!😂 Its fun to see how you apply your „military aircraft skills“ e.g. doing spaghetti pattern on a „commercial“ jet. I feel how you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone. Its not your best build but for the challenge level its still a very good one.
    One last thing im wondering: wouldnt it be easier to dip or paint the window-„bar“ first with the masking fluid and put then into the model instead of masking it when on the model. The 252 windows must have been a torture.

    Hi Max, definitely an original build and the effort you put in the masking is admirable. As you stated, a dark base color isn't the best option, especially when using light shades as white, yellow or red. A black base makes colors less vibrant and they just look off. When I paint, I use a neutral undercoat as mr surfacer or tamiya primer. Such a shame you had trouble in this build. The way water acrylics spray is one of the reasons I don't use them, I only spray tamiya and gunze acrylics. Talking about them, there is a thing that makes me curious and that is the way you use them. It looks like they are applied dustily, as if they are dried before touching the surface. What air pressure, dilution ratio and thinner do you use? I use store bought lacquer thinner in a ratio 30% paint and 70% thinner at 8/9 psi (0,6 bar circa) in various light coats that are just slightly wet. This gives me a solid, smooth and hard finish. It's such a joy to me. Best regards

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  4 года назад

      Hi Master Villain, I didn't dilute the Vallejo at all, that was straight out of the bottle and over diluted in my opinion. I used my standard pressure which might be around 20 psi. My compressor has no gauge.

    • @franktyphoon98
      @franktyphoon98 4 года назад

      I was actually referring to tamiya and gunze acrylics, since they are the ones I have experience with. Are you considering adding at least a pressure regulator to your compressor?

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  4 года назад

      Hi, I keep thinking the compressor is so old that it's going to breakdown soon, so I don't want to invest more into it. However, it keeps on chugging away! For the Tamiya paints I've always mixed in a ratio of about 75% to 80% paint to thinner -- for airbrushing.

    • @franktyphoon98
      @franktyphoon98 4 года назад

    Someday, I want to see a model jet kit adapted to look like the Plastic Jet in the Plastic Man animated series they had in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
    That was basically a jumbo jet (or more like an adapted C-5/C-130 cargo type plane?) with a wing more like an A-10's. The wing pivoted 90-degrees to allow a VTOL jet mode. It had HUGE jet engines, too.

      Hi EpicEli04, how are you? I'm not sure about the future. It's been a disappointing year for the channel and I consider it on a form of life support. So, time will tell for A-4's, F-111s, and other builds. 🤔

      @@MaxAfterburner Best wishes and good luck! You could try to do a collaboration with a bigger channel to try and boost your viewer base. Also you could create social media accounts for your channel and post photos there, and the word would get out a lot more when you upload.

      Thanks for the suggestions. Did you have a particular A-4 kit in mind?

      Nah, I don't think it's on life support. I like your channel. The 1/48 Hasegawa kit is the most accurate. Hobbyboss has inaccurate slats. I would recommend getting a metal landing gear from G-factor if you build the Hasegawa kit. Best of luck!

      @@MaxAfterburner I think the ones in 1/48 and 1/32 by hasegawa are pretty good, the panel lines are slightly shallow though.
