I recently got the Nikon Z8 and this is the video I have been looking for. I’m in college for Video and Cinema and this is exactly what I needed to help me grow and get into more advanced setups. This setup is such a good start to a wonderful world of tech. Thanks!!!
Great walkthrough, Raymond - glad I found your channel. Nice rig. Is there a 2-3 second blackout on your external monitor when you stop recording a clip? I've seen some conflicting reports about this on Z8/Z9.
Cheers! Yes, a slight pause, though much depends on the monitor used, in my experience. Some take longer than others to return to "live view." Accordingly, I hesitate to blame the cameras (I've tested Z8 and Z9 with 3 of the 4 monitors I own--Neewer, OSEE, Atomos).
Keep up the great work! Do you have a video on how to set up the z8 or the z9 with your atoms ninja? I have z9 and I ninja 5 and I keep getting my settings from the led in the movie and and not sure what I’m doing wrong
In the Setup Menu / HDMI, turn off the Output shooting info. In this Rig playlist I have my setup for the Z6. Much of the same applies. Note that the first generation Ninja V can't record 8K. ruclips.net/video/igB8eiePyvU/видео.html
Hello. Great video and u are very analytical. I have one question, can u record 12Bit Prores Raw on Ninja V? Not Prores, Prosres raw. I am asking, because the internal "solution" is very expensive. My pocket prefers ssds over cfexpress. Thank you in advance.
Thanks! Yes, absolutely. That's what the Z6/Ninja V "partnership" was based on. However, when it comes to 8K you'd need the Ninja V+. (Note that the Z8/Z9 record ProRes @ 4.1K). I asked Atomos if the V+ supports the Z9 but never got a straight answer. Notice it's not on the list of supported cameras. Now, when it comes to the Z8, I have not been able to record 12-bit RAW to the Ninja V. It's possible I'm missing something, but since I can record internally, I just hadn't the patience to mess around. Here's the complex info from Nikon: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z8/en/recorders_guid-01737eb6-d804-3af4-4c2e-b5a5bc64f5e6_70.html Edit: I'm guessing the Z8, like the Z9, doesn't output RAW via HDMI. Yes, big CFE cards are not cheap, but a lot less than they were when I bought my 512GB Delkin Black for the Z9, which cost me nearly $1,000CA. Meanwhile, the equivalent in SSD cost about $50! I got a 330GB Delkin Black for the Z8 for just $300CA. For this kind of use, though, I do appreciate being able to streamline the rig (when I don't need the monitor function).
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Ray that sounds like a plan. Will the V-mount battery fit the current holder your showing on the left hand grip. The reason is I have one and it would be great not to get another battery holder if that one would hold the smallrig v-battery. Cheers Frank
I have the Shinobi, my Z8 has trouble communicating with it when in video mode. In photo mode it works flawlessly when flicking between menus but when in video mode it shows no input in between changing menus

Glad it helped. Good luck in your work!
Cheers Ray, great video, so much detail. Thank you !!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Matt. Yep, B-roll marathon!😀
Great video Ray, Its like the setup for my Z9. I like this setup as it is easy to break it down and reset for an outing quickly. Cheers Frank
Thanks Frank! Yep, sure easier to transport.
Great, informative video's on the underdog brand for video. Thanks for making this series.
Glad you liked it!
Great video as usual. I dont have or plan to get a z8 still good info to build out for my z9. Keep up the great work, Ray. - Steve
Thanks 👍 Here's my original Z9 rig video: ruclips.net/video/nhogtCPhhT8/видео.html
well done, you nailed the explanation
Cheers!

Born to be wild I shout "Free the Z's!" No cages for me as a stills guy. 😃

Great rig suggestion. A bit random but do you know if the Nikon Z8 can record 4k 120 externally with a Ninja 5+ 8k monitor?
Sorry I can't say with any authority; I only have the original Ninja V. These days I mostly use a non-recording monitor with the Z8/Z9.
Okay, thank you.

@@RaymondParkerPhoto Thank you very much. So if you connect Z8 and Atomos the only thing u can get is Prores 4k 10Bit?
One more thing Ray, The battery setup on this video can it be you used too power the Atomos Ninja ? as well as the Z8 or Z9.
At that point, I'd recommend adding a V-mount battery. ruclips.net/video/N4q3gVV5ccU/видео.html

Hmmm. Interesting. Please keep us updated if you find a fix.
would de Atomos Ninja record Nikon's N-Log or just Prores Raw???
Log too
Thanks for your answer, I think I made a mistake... I meant Nikon RAW
