Looking back it is kinda crazy how long Gitaxian Probe was legal in modern without people realizing how broken it was. It was basically only played in Infect and sometimes in Storm. This thing flew under the radar for waaaay to long.
It was less good in slower modern back when you could play Eternal Witness for value and Tarmogoyf and Siege Rhino were premium threats and life totals mattered more while information from looking at a hand once often didn't last basically the whole game. Maybe it was still correct to play in more decks though.
@@qba919yeah that’s what was throwing me off. He had 7 cards in graveyard, he exiled 6 when the Titan only needs 5 exiles. So yeah l, even though it was a little awkward, the board state was kept correctly.
Carl and Team I do love the new graphics but do remember that the point of 1 video was not to overwork yourself! do be careful! Really enjoying the video!
Let's hope that the psychic health of the people involved in the video stabilised since nine days ago. Also, what a montage style change with the simple geometric shapes! I like it, it makes following the players' schemes even easier!
Really cool idea, would also be nice to see decks built around banned cards, but just with banned cards, so that the decks have more of a theme without legacy wrecking everything
I believe if built decks that were only banned cards legacy will completely crush modern. I would guess their maybe jeskai colours. Run a play set timewalk, ancestral recall, black lotus, some moxes, 4 white plume adventure, 4 lururus of dream den 4 mental mistep, 4 ragavan. Some combination of these broken cards and others. Probably azorius inative tempo would be the deck name. modern on the other hand doesnt really have a deck it can build, the only reason carl didnt win is due to have alot of "bad" legacy cards he ended up drawing into.
3:05 Gitaxian Probe is also like, the perfect magic card. If you could put 30 of them into your deck you probably would, since it effectively reduces the deck size until you can consistently combo with the other 30 cards. Although, casting 10 of them kills you unless you heal, so maybe not, but if it was actually no cost you would run 50-56 Gitaxian Probes and 4-10 game winning combo cards.
The funny part is that most of the Modern 'stuff that's too good' is not only not a problem in Legacy, it doesn't see play. Legacy is way more cutthroat than Modern, and FoW is a big part of that.
There are also some cards that are 'too good' for Legacy but not 'too good' for Modern (at least according to Wizards, lol). 11 cards appear on both lists, and I spotted 5 in this video.
Talk about higher quality editing! I love the new cut-ins; brief summaries of everything discussed, those tags across the top bar that could have good applications outside this delightfully silly format, the simple shapes to highlight the interview but not distract from the content. TOP QUALITY
Carl: I need to take a break from the youtube channel, we're only doing one video a week Also Carl: Well with all this extra time, I can spend twice as long editing that one video! Never change Carl.
Im sorry, is the multiverse guide a reference to guide portions in the film adaptation of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy??? Whether or not, im a huge fan of how it looks, great job on that!
OMG "Cardmarket's guide to the Multiverse" and "Freitag Nacht" had me laughing SO hard. Also really cool video! It alternated between Thoralf playing "3-mana win the game" and Carl going "0 mana draw a card, but the card is Consultation without a Thoracle in the deck, except now I hit Balance to prolong my suffering"
yeah you are right, that is certainly weird. Toralf has some explaining to do! Notably they did not show what cards were in their hand this game. So maybe they caught this mistake late?
Each deck is seemingly 1 of each banned card, so there would be no basics in the decks, so they just get a free basic from outside the game each turn. You can even see Toffel do it at 5:56
It's really cool to see how some cards like Oko are just too powerfull by themselves and get banned from pretty much everywhere but others depend much more on the meta of the format and/or are banned because they enable other broken cards. I wish we could have seen more cards but I guess broken cards make for short games, otherwise they wouln't be broken!
That is a REALLY good face on the thumbnail. Also I know you mentioned that you'd still keep the best deck ever series as a 2-every-week, but please don't feel like you have to. I still love watching every video you guys make, whether it's once or twice a week. ALSO also yeesh, new editing?!? Take care of yourself!!!!
Great video! Could you guys look to do “unbanned” cards in 2024? What does a hogaak deck look like with bridge and faithless banned and can it stack up against boros energy or another of the tier modern decks now?
I don't know anything about mixing or levels or anything, but the microphone peaking can be really distracting in your videos sometimes. I Love the easter egg in the drop-down at 2:54. Keep up the good work!
I really love the explanations of why cards were banned and it's a great video as always Hope everyone is doing ok and take care of yourself ❤(it's also aimed at you random viewer who stumbled on that comment)
Wait... at 2:52 Toralf shows a hand of Umezawa's Jitte and Uro. How did he both play a Nadu and Island that he did not have in hand before drawing a card on his turn?
Sticker are banned from magic in general it not a format based ban. Same reason he wasntly playing crusade or the other cultrul insesitive cards, or ante cards, or the two dexterity cards or shaharazad.
I don't like the thumbnail with the nuclear explosion for this video since it didn't really convey what the video was about. I thought it was made up broken cards which isn't as interesting as only banned card game
If it the sword was equipped to Nadu, isn’t the rule that you can’t equip something if it’s already attached to? Wouldn’t you need to flip it between uro and Nadu? Or am I just misremembering?
Cards banned in legacy usually enable other cards to be broken, rather than being individually powerful. Modern cards are banned for being too powerful.
Edit:they play basic outside their decks, so don't have any error in the video In 2:54 carl looks at thoralf hand, have a jitte and a uro, then thoralf draws a card drop a island and cast a Nadu, none of them are in the hand when thoralf reveal it. I know this is more a informative video about why the cards are banned than a video about who will win, but i think the fact you can see that is scripted is very bad. Besides that, great video!
10:15 didnt thoralf miss lethal here? he could have just put the -1/-1 on Uro as Nadu famously gives all your creatures that broken ability, making Nadu power 10 in the end

0:59 this new editing for the commentary is killer. Woah!
thank you! I had a lot of fun coming up with the animations :) - Brian
Love the pop up video style
I have been looking forward to this matchup ever since Carl's "Oops, All Bans"-deck ❤

I think at 9:22 Thoralf's bridge should get exiled.
And then he should not have been able to Escape Uro I believe...
it looks like they caught it but didn't mention it later, as all 6 cards from Thoralf's graveyard were exiled instead of just 5 for escape

I kind of want to see this played out a couple more times. There are so many powerful cards we didn't see! And the Nadu / Uro draw was just too lucky.
"I'll play a Mountain, which is not banned anywhere"
It is now!
Huh?
@@calfriedman6981 At one point Carl says that about Mountains not being banned...
You guys always have the best editing tricks. The little blurbs of info sticking out from the cards is such a great visual element
9:12 Wasn't it possible for Toffel to jitte Carl's Goblin recruiter before he equipped it with Skullclamp? Would've meant two fewer cards for him.
They are playing loosey goosey over here
Wasn't supposed to be mansplaining. Just thought that I missed something there. Love those guys
Yeah, that was possible. For fun purposes I am sure they wanted Karl to draw some cards
Could've jitte'd on Nadu to keep triggering that too, but it's not really all that fun to watch I guess.
Yes. He also should have exiled the enchantment from his graveyard as soon as the goblin went to the graveyard.

Fun video. My cube is built around cards that are (or once were) banned.
Just want to say that the new format of videos is really nice and the effort can be seen, good job Carl ❤❤
9:11 Thoralf didn't exile his Bridge from Below because of the Goblin dying with the clamp.

I think Toffel missed lethal by using the -1/-1 on Nadu instead of Uro, since Nadu gives all his creatures that ability

Sticker are banned from magic in general it not a format based ban. Same reason he wasntly playing crusade or the other cultrul insesitive cards, or ante cards, or the two dexterity cards or shaharazad.
funny enough he wouldn't have been able to cast uro because when the goblin died it would have exiled one of the cards in his graveyard
