Commander decks would’ve been sweet. I would’ve gotten it for my sister, who’s a big cap fan. As much as I (as a purist Magic player) don’t like the universes beyond (purely from the standpoint of breaking magic immersion, they are extremely thematic in their design), it gives me an opportunity to play with all my siblings. My brother has a LOTR deck, my sister is a doctor who fan, and now marvel is coming to the fray for my other sister. Giving us a full pod. I’m excited for marvel so that we can play together
@@spamtonto I apologize for my phrasing. I am not toxic towards UB. I personal don’t like them on my own magic cards, but I have no problem with other people playing the things they like. I understand it is bringing new people to the game

Professor! Help! The Marvel Secret lairs were a DISASTER. I waited in line from the moment they opened, took off work, and still didn’t get any by the time I finally got to my cart. It’s Monty Python all over again but WORSE. Time to put a call out to Disney to intervene if WoTC won’t listen to our concerns!!!
I miss the days when Magic the Gathering cards were relevant to Magic the Gathering. The Fortnite license model has ruined the atmosphere it took decades to build.
100% agree with you, surprised the prof hasn't done a vid on UB/ Marvel now being in standard, seems like such a huge clash/forced change for players that just want original MTG IP to be seen.
I’d love to see a commander deck video for any of these, but specifically Wolverine the most. They being said, I very much enjoy Marvel and Wolverine is up there with my favorites, but his card looks like a ton of fun.
Wah wah, if only you pseudo elitists realized how many new players these sets breathe life into the game with maybe you'd change your tune. As a LGS owner who grew up with Pokemon and Yugioh and never touched Magic til 25 years later with bloomburrow, I've never been more excited for any tcg releases (for any game) than these recent secret lairs and crossovers in magic like LOTR. There's a reason they know what they're doing
@@treasuredcollectibles a little of beyond is fine but it’s all they do now. Having not been around the game for 30 plus years you don’t realize the damage that can and is being done by these sets and products. You just see the cash flow now.
@@treasuredcollectibles its not 'pseudo elitists' its players concerned about the long-term health of the game they love. magic didn't need cheap crossover garbage to appeal to new players, it was doing that just fine and making more money than ever before universes beyond. universes beyond exists because hasbro is hemorrhaging money and magic is basically the only thing they own that's currently profitable. its just short-term profit chasing. how are we going to get these cards reprinted when hasbro loses the license? are we going to get reprints of these unique secret lair cards at all? what about all the tlotr cards, will they ever be reprinted? warhammer 40k? dr. who? these are questions we didn't have to ask before universes beyond, it presents its own set of problems magic didn't and doesn't need.
Hey, Spongebob Secret Lair 1 is coming out during the Year of Marvel. Turns out in 2025 we'll finally hit the event horizon of Deadpool versus Spongebob at table. . .
Any time I hear about a secret layer, I immediately disregard it. I’ve never bought one, and when I got back into MTG, and heard about them, I was excited. But after I learned that they are sold immediately and never reprint them, I’ve just given up before even starting to try and buy them.
There's 3 ways they can do symbiote that fits the theme of them mechanically. 1. Is how slivers are built but more of general buffs for all your creatures. So instead of of it saying slivers it's just creatures you control. 2. Mutate. It makes sense to put a symbiote on your card and make a stronger version of said card. They could do this option but since mutate is a lacking mechanic I highly doubt they would do it. 3. My favorite idea is the living weapon mechanic. Because that's exactly what symbiotes are. Sadly I can't really see it being used with Voltron type commanders. 4. They could always do transform cards like March of the machines but I don't think people would like that. Whatever we do get I would love more symbiotes or legendary symbiotes to have a partner/ companion like mechanic that way we can pair them with other hero and villains commanders.
@@olsongc8422 we definitely are since spiderman is gonna be a tent pole set like LOTR set. Considering that set had 300+ cards with 132 commanders including the commander precons, and starter deck. I hope that we do get street level heroes and villains including blade, punisher, Luke Cage, daredevil and etc.
These cards look fun, and the designs are neat. I will enjoy watching people play with them. Maybe I'll see post Malone on game Knights play with them. I've come to realize that, while it's fun to watch celebrities play Magic, it's sad because celebrities are the only ones that can afford to play it. I've effectively been priced out of the game
As someone that has been a fan of Marvel since the 90s when I was 7, I can't wait to queue 20 seconds after the sale goes up only to have the bundle sniped by scalpers immediately. I want these cards so much that I'm already extremely stressed out by the likelihood that I won't manage to get any of them, especially Storm, and will have to pay a 300-400% markup 1 by 1 over the next year. This isn't fomo at this point, WotC is actually making people miss out.
“Are you going to be picking up these secret lairs?” is a wild question to ask when everyone knows they’ll be sold out to primarily scalpers within minutes of release.
I just think its hyper preditory to release brand new cards in this and have no bundle where you can just get new cards. If you want all 5 marvel heroes, you have to spend $200 minimum. Cool. Great.
@pavma7 imagine printing out pictures of iron man magic cards and snickering like a chucklehead. respect the money you and the rest of us spend and stop messing around with fake cards. you don't need dozens of decks.
Are these really going to affect the established price of the reprints? No-one who isn't already in the queue when they go on sale will be able to buy one
I wonder how popular these commanders are going to be. It's going to be kinda hard to get your hands on them if you miss these drops. Might be a shows up on edhrec a lot but less so in paper situation

I completely stopped buying cards. I buy some chinese proxies from time to time, but I haven't given WotC any money every since they printed Lord of the Rings. That was the end for me.
@bazookadog6 Mechanically it was a pretty good set. I actually like the full set universe beyond things a lot more than the secret lair ones, because with the full sets they are at least still respecting the *game*. With UB secret lairs they are disrespecting the Mtg IP, the UB IP AND the Mtg game.
On the art of the card Heroic Intervention I believe Black Panthers foot is supposed to go behind the guy he's about to punch. Either that or Black Panther just has really tiny feet.
12:22 This right here is all I really wanted out of this licensing deal: Magali frikkin' Villeneuve painting Marvel characters. Good job WotC, you did the one thing you needed to do.
Obscuring Haze rules, it's absolutely been a big deal when I've played it. Fogs are great. Though you're not wrong, the rest of that cycle is better and it's nuts.
Ororo Borealis is a genius name for a card in the Storm lair. Also, this is not likely to be the last we see of these cards. It's an appetizer, meant to squeeze money out of whales. There's a Spider-Man set coming next year, and i expect Avengers and X-Men to follow, and they'll likely be getting Commander precons and all that stuff.
Thanks as always Prof! I am likely to get each Marvel Secret Lair in foil and probably, as I collect the Secret Lairs I like anyway. I will definitely get the Wolverine Foil , as I collect all Berserk printings and will probably wait for the non-foil single to be out a while to get it for $10-$15 hopefully. Becoming more and more of a collector, rather than a player. The meta's change so fast, new sets, printing directly into formerly non-rotating formats, etc. Not complaining too much, but just getting older and older.
I don’t buy non print to demand Secret Lairs. I’m not supporting the Fomo Marketing. Print to demand with 30 days to make your purchase decision was great for the player base. I will happily buy the Extra Life that is print to demand because of the great value and the charity.
I actually think limited run stuff is important for any collectible ecosystem, but I get that not everyone is excited about the collectible part of this collectible card game, and is instead focused on the game part. I only say that because you said print to demand was great for the player base, and I am one of those players who disagrees.
I am considering buying the Captain America as my first ever Secret Lair, because i am also a big fan of Assassins Creed and it could be cool to throw Excalibur or canonically a Mjölnir.
@@KenseiRaptor you're being sarcastic but I unironically believe this. We should have gatekeeped the game better so they wouldn't have to dilute what made the game great to appeal to the least common denominator. Its actively ruining the game by gutting long term stability for short term gains
As a limited player, I still want to get these. So flavor wise ...I love it. That being said, it does feel like hasbro is really squeezing us for every single dollar and doesn't feel great.
I really need a few of these cards, especially Commander's Plate, but I am desperately trying to sit this one out on principle. They want me to vote with my dollars and I will do it even if it makes little to no difference. Little drops of dollars Little grains of coin Make the mighty moolah Around Hasbro's loin Little acts against FOMO Little draws of the pursestrings Will save the game of Magic that we all know and love.
Printing the mana symbols in RWB order instead of BRW is how wizards did it before Kahns of Tarkir so I would say more of a return to tradition instead of a break from it we have been broken since kahns.
There's a solid chance the winter Miku lair doesn't actually have a snow Miku in it, given how evidently little WOTC care. One out of six cards in the autumn one was even in anime style, the other 5 were given to non-Japanese artists who wouldn't know talent if it punched them in the face.
Yeah, the proxies I can get nowadays are pretty much indistinguishable from the official cards, including the holo sticker and everything. If they didn't say "proxy" on the back you'd need a microscope to spot any difference. And they cost 1-2 € depending on how much I get. And I can design my own versions if the official ones suck like Black Panther or Primal Vigor here where so much of the artwork disappears behind the text box while there's so much empty head space above because apparently they didn't brief the artist about the layout of the cards beforehand.
@@yurisei6732 It's 2 € if I only get like 10 cards. I usually wait till I got a big order together with some friends and then it's about 1€. And yes, of course I could get them for 50 cents or even less elsewhere and have done so in the past. But I'm a graphic designer/art director working in the print sector for 25 years and have high quality standards and am willing to pay more for that.
Hi Professor! Big fan, I didn't want to leave this comment but I felt compelled to address this since I keep seeing it being said: the price for the Marvel Lairs hasn't been raised, it's at the same pricing as all of the Universes Beyond mechanically unique cards Lairs before it: Street Fighter, Stranger Things, the Walking Dead etc all were $50 for the foil lairs.
And yet the upcoming Spiderman set will no doubt be even more profitable than they absurdly profitable not-even-really-LOTR set. It's what people didn't want when the UB cards were things they weren't into, but the moment an IP they like gets cards, the moral stance disappears.
@@yurisei6732detractors might not be the buyers and how are you supposed to coexist in the MtG space without interacting with these? You sounds like the "yet you live in it, interesting" guy fr the we should improve society somehow comic
@@yurisei6732 I mean, I'll be buying a shit ton of Final Fantasy x MTG crossover set so. This is why I can't hate on UB... I just think they should stay away from certain properties that really don't fit. Like Spongebob is pretty stupid but yea... LOTR, D&D and Final Fantasy seem fine to me. Marvel is kinda edging the line, but they're doing the flavor to these characters correctly...
As Cap is my really most desired of these lairs(see: my youtube tag name), I think Shield of War and Peace is thematically appropriate as a name. The shield represents both in equal measure. The shield is wielded to uphold peace, and if you make war, you'll catch it to the face.
I only buy one secret lair to actually build with and have fun with. Wizards and Hasbro know these will sell out in minutes and are taking advantage of it by making them even more expensive. I will try to get them because I love magic and I do really like Marvel, but my hopes aren't too high because it's a work day. I was happy to see you in Pacifica and now at the Con in Vegas proff! Next time I'll have the tokens for you to sign :)
I get that the lowest printing on some of these are low but we are paying a premium for artwork which I feel should be added to the value to help. Like even if it was $2 or so for a card I think it would help.
I will definitely be picking up Wolverine and Storm. I'm a big marvel fan, but especially X-Men. Looking forward to building a awesome instant/fight styled Wolverine voltron commander, and a wacky "strom" Storm commander!

Any time I hear about a secret layer, I immediately disregard it. I’ve never bought one, and when I got back into MTG, and heard about them, I was excited. But after I learned that they are sold immediately and never reprint them, I’ve just given up before even starting to try and buy them.
The Spider-Man set better have Symbiotes as a creature type and not a reskin of like Slivers or something......
They should be enchantment creatures
@@Dantevonlocke oh, like glimmers? Or work something like the Germ tokens.
I hope we get a full cycle and not just Venom and Carnage.
Maybe mutate/bestow

Same, if they sell out. I’ll just print them out.
Cool. Great.
I mean even if you dont buy them they wont stop. Cuz theyre too big to fail.
That’s the point of the secret lairs. It won’t stop sadly, but it’s much much cheaper to go down to your local print shop and print them yourself.

Yeah honestly at this point if you want the full set just proxy them for 30 bucks :)

I am glad The Ozolith is down a bit thanks to this Secret Lair. I’ll probably pick up a single from an older set.
Are these really going to affect the established price of the reprints? No-one who isn't already in the queue when they go on sale will be able to buy one

I actually think limited run stuff is important for any collectible ecosystem, but I get that not everyone is excited about the collectible part of this collectible card game, and is instead focused on the game part. I only say that because you said print to demand was great for the player base, and I am one of those players who disagrees.

Wake me up for winter Miku. It may not be good but it'll be nostalgic.
There's a solid chance the winter Miku lair doesn't actually have a snow Miku in it, given how evidently little WOTC care. One out of six cards in the autumn one was even in anime style, the other 5 were given to non-Japanese artists who wouldn't know talent if it punched them in the face.
This set may be my first dip into buying proxies.
Do it, save your money
Yeah, the proxies I can get nowadays are pretty much indistinguishable from the official cards, including the holo sticker and everything. If they didn't say "proxy" on the back you'd need a microscope to spot any difference. And they cost 1-2 € depending on how much I get. And I can design my own versions if the official ones suck like Black Panther or Primal Vigor here where so much of the artwork disappears behind the text box while there's so much empty head space above because apparently they didn't brief the artist about the layout of the cards beforehand.

This is exactly what people didn't want, Iron Man vs Chun-Li vs Gandalf vs Godzilla like wtf
And yet the upcoming Spiderman set will no doubt be even more profitable than they absurdly profitable not-even-really-LOTR set. It's what people didn't want when the UB cards were things they weren't into, but the moment an IP they like gets cards, the moral stance disappears.

Love the secret lair floating heads! Will you be reviewing the new beginner box and other products coming with foundations?
As Cap is my really most desired of these lairs(see: my youtube tag name), I think Shield of War and Peace is thematically appropriate as a name. The shield represents both in equal measure. The shield is wielded to uphold peace, and if you make war, you'll catch it to the face.
