    Just in time for the holidays, The Film Den covers one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever made.
    *This is an edited retrospective of a movie WITH COMMENTARY from me. RUclips doesn't allow uploads of full movies, and I'm not interested in doing that either way.*

    I grew up in a bookstore (literally, my mother owned a bookstore from 1985 to 2002) that mostly specialized in romance books, so I might be able to shed some light on why Misery was so popular in-universe. In the 80s and 90s, hands down the most popular and bestselling genre of fiction was historical romance*, in volume total if not specific books. Many of them were series, but they would tend to focus on a family rather than one specific person. But there were many authors who became a "big deal" just by writing novels, like Danille Stelle, Julie Garwood, Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, and several others. Big movie deals weren't as much of a thing then primarily because publishing and Hollywood were chasing after different demographics. For example, Diana Gabaldon was considered a "supernatural romance" writer who was considered wildly successful at the time, but you probably know her series best not as the time-travel romance series from the 90s, but the Starz TV series from 2014 Outlander.
    That bit about demographic is important because, while it makes sense that an author might be that well-known for writing a historical romance series...the fiction market was heavily gendered and segregated at that time. Leigh Greenwood was a popular historical romance writer who focused on frontier/western era historical romance (think less OK Corral and more Little House on the Prairie). The series was very popular...but suffered a HUGE drop in sales when someone found out that Leigh Greenwood was a man (people got over it eventually). So to me, the unbelievable part isn't that people knew who he was from those romance novels...but that a romance series published under the name "Paul Sheldon" would have been successful.
    But all this is the sort of thing you'd only really know about if you had exposure to the publishing industry in some way, particularly the romance industry, at the time the story is set. You're absolutely correct that the story makes way more sense in a post Harry Potter/Twilight/50 Shades world. ESPECIALLY with fandom ripping itself to shreds right now fighting over genre fiction and obsessively attacking creators for making choices they think are "wrong".
    * Historical romance is exactly what it says on the tin, a romance set in a historical (rather than contemporary) setting. Victorian romance is a specific subgenre with their own style. So the Misery series as described in the movie/novel, while set in the Victorian era, wouldn't technically be Victorian romance. The best example I can think of is all cyberpunk is near-future science fiction, but not all near-future science fiction is cyberpunk.

    King said in a couple of interviews that Anny is a metaphor for drug-addiction, but I think it works better as a warning of insane fan-dome.
    Also, Pauls problem is totaly avoidable. He can get his "serious" books published and still write Misery novels (even if he doesn't like them) at the same time.
    And yes, the scene when he's forced to destroy his new novel is painful ... It has the taste of SJWs forcing someone to destroy what they have created cause it doesn't fit what the SJWs want from the creator ...

    Ohhhhh, she's from California. Okay, now I understand.
    Also, you might not be from the proper generation, but the reference to "Liberace records" is...significant. He was extremely popular among women of a certain age & demographic, and the fact that she (a woman about 2 decades too young) loves him indicates just how abnormal & out-of-sync she is. It's just a fun touch there.

    Great review Dena! This movie is really intense and I like how the actors are so on point, especially how Kathy Bates can pull off the "keeps you guessing" on-edge lines. Also the fact that this came out before fandoms as we know them today makes Stephen King look like some kind of Nostradamus. Like this just makes me instantly think of that crazy person who threatened to leak Voltron's spoilers if the Voltron team didn't make their preferred ship canon, or the unfortunate way Steven Universe fans harassed and threatened the team working on the show just for having a different ship preference. It's a scary how many Annie Wilkes' there are today and how the group mentality of having other fans who agree with and support the behavior makes the creators feel like the warden of an asylum...
    Anyway, on a lighter note. I really love that Richard Farnsworth is in this movie. To me he will always be Matthew Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables and seeing his character in this is a lot like him as Matthew Cuthbert since both are soft-spoken kind, likible old guys.

  • @ToruKun1

    The way Annie totally goes HAM on Paul for killing off Misery gives me a lot of secondhand embarrassment because that visceral, violent sense of entitlement is totally what I felt when Loki died in the first three minutes of Infinity War. Obviously I could never kidnap and hobble the Russo Brothers for offing my imaginary husband, but it's interesting how this film remains relevant in the modern era of media consumption and fan interaction.

    Kathy Bates kills it in this movie. She is so versatile, that even though she's an A-list celebrity, I still consider her to be underrated.
    Brace yourself, because there is one aspect of the Twilight franchise I will defend. Ready? Here we go, I think Meyer's take on age old mythical lore is neat. Say what you want about Edward glittering in the sun, the individual unique gifts vampires have, is one I like. I'm not Native American, so I can't comment on the Werewolf aspect of the story culturally speaking. I've always said, if you took away the Clapton-awful love story, you're left with something that is really interesting.

    • @NotWellKnown
      @NotWellKnown 6 лет назад +7

      You know, I actually agree with you. I read every book, and they are all terrible. However, some of the ideas are neat. The unfortunate aspect is that she didn't really do much world building beyond what the plot required, or necessarily flesh out some of the mythology that did matter. Vampires glowing in the sun to act as a lure for their prey could have been a good idea if it was ever shown to be used that way, instead of a throwaway thing to make Edward seem "cooler". The idea of the werewolves being more shape-shifters that happen to use a wolf form had something to it, but it might have worked better if a couple members of the tribe just happened to align better with some other animal. The pack dynamics were just too ingrained for it to make sense that they weren't true werewolves. Vampires having different abilities wasn't anything revolutionary, since even Anne Rice used that trope, but that is one of the very few good aspects of the Twilight lore. Even the idea of the vampires having a loose caste system, with essentially mafia style leaders was an alright touch, but we still don't see anything else about that aside from the Volturi messing with everyone. As is, dropping the romance aspect wouldn't leave enough for even a short lore book. But, if Meyer expanded the lore, and maybe made a spinoff in a different genre, I might be willing to give it a shot.

    In that same strain, I worked briefly at a Barnes and Nobles after the turn of the century. Romance was the largest section, had the highest turnover, and was constantly being refilled with new works DAILY.

    I was rather disappointed with the movie. I don't think they did justice to Annie's character, Paul's relationship with Misery, Paul's hellish life, or his drug addiction (which they cut out of the movie entirely). As much as I love Buster and his wife, their addition takes away from the claustrophobic atmosphere that the books had.
    As an aside, the Novril is stated in the books to have a very bitter taste, so that's why it makes sense to put it in the wine. In the books, he considers putting it in her icecream, but dismisses it because the bitterness would contrast unmistakably with the sweetness.

    This movie is a good 60 percent cause that scarred me against women and getting involved with them. My mom used to watch this movie a lot because it was one of her favorites and I'd watch it with her all the time since childhood. Great movie but fucking scary as fuck. First time I saw this as a (stupid) kid, I thought Anne was Paul's wife getting angry and mutilating him over a book he wrote and that marked the day I never vowed to get married myself and most certainly not to a woman. Enough about my personal fears but one other thing, Kathy Bates resembles a fatter, grotesque aged version of Milla Jovovich in this film. Imagine if Milla did the remake or perhaps a sequel that reveals information that Anne had a younger sister who wants revenge on Paul years later after he killed Anne. That would be my idea of a story for Misery 2.

    That kind of romance was a lot more popular in the 1980's - Misery came out in 1987. Perhaps the most famous single series of books was (now I think completely forgotten) Jalna-series, still selling well though it started a decades before, and then there was of course author Dame Barbara Cartland... Do an image search, but wear sunglasses.

    and seriously LOL at the twilight and 50 shades of grey being mentioned in the same sentence as if they're separate entities within the same genre. 50 shades of Grey was originally Twilight fanfiction, that then had to be transformed and characters names changed (and all the supernatural stuff thrown out) title changed and resold as 50 shades

    Something that makes me feel weird is how happy Annie was with the book until Misery dies. Was Misery’s Child just a normal book in the Misery series that killed off the Misery character at the very end? If it is that seems hella weird bro

    • @Cyborcat
      @Cyborcat  5 лет назад

      A book taking a tragic turn toward the end isn't that weird.

  • @QuikVidGuy

    ...but why is he starting from the end of the book that was burned? Does she want a huge gap in the story? Why not make him re-write Misery's Child?

    • @Cyborcat
      @Cyborcat  6 лет назад +1

      It's not Misery's Child that she had him burn. Misery's Child was published and she was shown buying a copy. Rewriting Misery's Child wouldn't make any sense because it still exists as a published book.
      The book she had him burn was an untitled non-Misery book that he was CURRENTLY working on. She had him burn it so he would forget about moving on from Misery and write another Misery book.

    The real scary thing I always found about Kathy Bates’ performance is how she makes Annie feel endearing. She really does seem likeable and happy in those moments where she is happy. But oh man, when she switches….she becomes downright terrifying. The fact she can make you (well me at least) both simultaneously love and then hate her so quickly shows how incredible she is in that role.
    I listened to the audiobook version of the Misery novel. The lady that read it was also really good (particularly at the nasty parts) but she never really captured the endearing part of Annie’s character (though I would argue book Annie is even worse, though they’re both serial killers) which imo is honestly part of what makes her such an extraordinary villain. Kathy and James deserve all the love and applause that they get for this movie, they were both incredible.
    Part of me wonders what it would have been like if they kept the lawnmower scene in the movie lol….but yeah maybe that was a little too much.

    would you believe that this is the first time ive ever watched this movie. (well I'm not watching it, I'm watching you watch it0 that's not weird is it....oh dear....any who keep up the good work.and hearing your rant about twilight and fifty shades reminded me of my school days when harry potter was the biggest thing ever. everyone I knew would never shut up about those books and because everyone was a faster reader than me I would get spoiled befor I even got started. and form then onwards I have this burning dislike of those books.and as for twilight being targeted or being appalling to a certain demographic I would agree with u on the most part but I know a few, people that for the life of I can not understand why they liked that dreck. like these people I know, if only in passing, seem to be rational, sane and more over (baring twilight) seem to have good taste in storys. so I'm honestly perplexed that they to seem to find injoyment in it.each to there own I suppose
