Thank you very much for the review! I recently got my technician class license and needed a radio to start with HF. I like going places and being mobile. i have a baofeng that i hit local repeaters talking to neighboring states. I have lost taste for VHF and UHF and now want to do global communication or at least country wide. After looking at many different radios that operate in HF but i have found this one to be my favorite. I just ordered one online and waiting for its arrival. Thank you for the review and 73!

If you are going to use the 817 on its internal battery, I recommend using the BNC connector for your antennas. The two jacks on the radio are connected to the same RF point and just switched back and forth using an RF switch. To save a few mili-amps use the BNC connector, since the switch is turned off when set to BNC.

And that's exactly what i said in the video.

I don't remember you saying that in the video. but, probably my mistake. I lose small details like that some times.

AHA !! Finally someone talks about the Counterpoise Length Formula, based on different frequencies. You have NO IDEA how many different answers I have received to that question. The ONLY thing I see different is you often have the wire laying on the ground / in the sand at the beach, etc, when quite a few others ( including the Buddipole Site ) insist that the wire be suspended about the ground to a small degree.
You deserve a Patreon Patron just for the excellent info you provide in your videos. Besides them being interesting in general. I prefer becoming a Patreon Patron, rather than the PayPal link as once the Patron link is established, I don't have to worry about going into the Pay Pal link manually for each video. Keep those 817ng and portable antenna and digital videos coming Eric !! We;ll have to do coffee some day ! You really aren't that far away in Vero... 73 de N4BRM

N4RBM: Counterpoises should be 1/4 wavelength. The correct formula is 234/Mhz = Feet.

Enjoyed the video. Looking forward to more. I Have read reports that the finals blowing is caused by leaving the battery back in the radio when not in use (?). There are lots of articles on-line and theories. Love the portable qrp stuff. Good luck with the new toy.

Note: Those counterpoise dimensions mentioned by the host are MINimum needed lengths. Ask the experts: A counterpoise longer than the needed length (via the 180 divided by Freq} is just fine and dandy, and does not have any adverse effect. So, (as mentioned by the host) just cut a length of 25-30' of wire and you will cover ALL frequencies with an effective counterpoise(not mentioned by the host).

I added the SOTAbeams DC Powerpole Adapter and the supplied screw doesn't seem long enough to loosen and attach a counterpoise without the adapter coming loose. Going to have to see if I can get a screw just a bit longer. Anyone else have this issue?

I see it is a NI-MH battery. Mine is the original battery, it is a NI-CD
battery. Do you think I can still use the same power adapter for it,
for charging? I have just heard that you should not charge NI-MH
batteries in a NI-CD battery charger.

And once you answer the Bike Battery Question ... does Florida State Law REALLY insist that I have a RED FLASHING LIGHT dragging at the end of my COUNTERPOISE WIRE while I ride around on my bike, talking on HF ?? I thought the ORANGE FLAG would be sufficient when operating on my bike in Florida ... Just think of all the extra gear you could carry around in the BASKET of your THREE WHEELER !! LOL

DAMN, WHY ALWAYS TALK ONLY ABOUT THE H.F PART OF RADIO?
THERE ARE OTHER BANDS, AND SOME ARE NOT INTERESTED IN H.F USE, BUT UHF AND VHF. PLEASE COVER THESE AS WELL.
THE RD0MVS1 PA FETS ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR 10 WATTS!
YOU WILL DESTROY THEM IN SHORT ORDER.
I HAVE AN 817, AND I 'LEVELLED' THE OUTPUT TO 5 WATTS. EVEN AT 10 WATTS, A 3dB CHANGE GETS YOU NOTHING.
