    This is one of the better videos on this radio. This might make a nice second HF rig for the office.

    Thanks for a nice video, looking forward to the new video about digi modes.
    I just got mine about a month ago, and I'm really happy with it so far, having made around 600 QSO's with it from many SOTA and WWFF references.
    The new firmware has a very handy function; SWR graphing over 1.2 to 6 MHz spans, which is very handy in the field. Apparently a new one will arrive this fall with band scope functionality.

    Great video! I have a X108G, and yes, an Icom HM-151 mic works fine. I set the CMP to 2:1, and always get good reports, followed by "Its a what?". The newest firmware contains a SWR plot graph as well. Pretty neat little radio.

      Which is the newest firmware you are running? My serial starts 1**** but cant get any info to which one i need. This is the outdoor version but Nobody online shows the SWR function. Video as soon as i get this info :)

      HamRadioConcepts My firmware is 1.00.4, dated December 2016. The option for swr appears on the menu page with sql. Its fairly accurate, enough for field use.

      HamRadioConcepts Another thing not mentioned, the X108G only draws about 600ma on RX, so not too bad.

    Comment on the power connection. It isn't radio standard but it is common. It's called a mini Tamiya connector, commonly used in things like R/C cars. Fairly cheap and readily available.

    Great video and I know a couple of chaps would be very interested in seeing one over here in the UK. I too am fairly new to HAM and an M6 licence holder, so my 817ND is the love of my life at the moment. Many Thanks M6KVK (Gary)

    Nice demo. Looks like a fun little radio. The 20 watts is a good selling point for some people.

      george A. Welcome to Ham Radio !! You found a good site here to watch and learn all about everything from A to Z. Eric works hard at producing quality videos. You might want to scroll back thru his past videos as well. Lots of good info. Do you have your license yet? Callsign? 73 de N4BRM, Bruce in SW FL.

    Nice video I think it would be interesting for low power qrp operations or a compact radio for HF in a cramped space car even if using a single antenna tuned to favorite Mobil band. Though the price should besides much lower if buying used at a hamfest in couple years it may be worth $200 . TY

    I like the radio but why do you need half watt increments in the power setting. This comment was entered on 9/26/2019. This is a cool radio but you can get a FT-891 at DX Engineering for like around $ 560. Same size but 1 to 100 watts and more menu functions.

    I have a Yaesu FT-817 radio. The Radio is a great back packer radio and uses AA batteries or a external 12 gel battery. I haven't tried this Chinese radio, but the Yaesu is proven to be tough and dependable.

    • @SayHelloToWilko
      @SayHelloToWilko 7 лет назад +1

      Can you share what you don't like about the FT-891 (given that is a mobile rig at a quite moderate price point)?

    • @hotforrobot
      @hotforrobot 7 лет назад +1

      I also picked up a FT-891 for my first HF rig. I think it's a better choice if you can afford it. Compact and full of features. It's nice to have 100W at times. Menu system was challenging at first, but a few hours of use helped me understand the logic of it. There are also a few cons for me. The spectrum display function is useless. The lack of an internal ATU is sort of a pain if you operate portable. Also, not good for backpacking if looking for light weight. I use it car portable with 20lbs of battery.
      I think the X108G would make a great hiking radio. A small lithium pack, wire dipole, and you're set.

    • @pennjennings4144
      @pennjennings4144 7 лет назад +3

      I think that you did he right thing. The FT-891 is only $629 right now at HRO and Yaesu actually supports the Hobby. Companies like this make cheap products but they don't do anything for the hobby, they don't support clubs, DX, swaps or anything else in general.... Plus the FT-891 is 100 watts, in SSB
      in bad band conditions that can be a big deal.

    Good video, how true is the band width settings do you know? 2.3 khz is very narrow and 6.0 is very wide. Anyone have input?

    • @MidlifeRenaissanceMan
      @MidlifeRenaissanceMan Год назад +1

      The CW filter is pretty narrow. 2.3KHz for SSB is reasonably tight. The 6KHz is designed for AM and again is reasonably tight for the mode. The filters default to the mode, though you can use the filter feature to change to a wider (or narrower) filter
      80% of the time I’m on CW so the filter works sweet. I’ll open up to 8KHz for digital

    WARNING!!! This rig has no high/infinite SWR protection. Do NOT use with auto-tuner!! Auto-tuners take a couple of seconds to resonate. Unprotected final PA transistors can smoke in a fraction of a second. Warranty ends after only one year and there are no PA modules or qualified techs in North America to repair. Shipping back to China takes weeks/months and you must speak Mandarin to communicate with them. Repairs and shipping will be about the cost of a new transceiver. USA distributor does not honor warranty -- only the manufacturer. However, if you don't use an auto-tuner you'll probably be okay. Use only a resonate antenna or manual tuner. With manual tuner, tune RX for maximum noise before transmitting on lowest power setting.

    • @timothyfidler2088
      @timothyfidler2088 5 лет назад +1

      Vry conservative there. It uses the RD16HH Mosfets from Renesas ie Mitsub. They will essentiallly take infinite VSWR for a few seconds AS LONG as the VCC is no more than 14V. IN addition the schematic shows a 4.5 ohm resistor paralleled with an inductor on the supply line in an attempt to protect Mosfets against excursions. IN Sum.. it appears to be well engineered but not at the Apollo radio systems level. As for PA modules you talk of that is BS. They are discrete components and cost as of time of writing $5.5 USD from Ham radio on line places within Conus.
