- Over 1000 people have signed a petition demanding a review of a decision by the Zimbabwean government to increase the passport application fee by 50%. The substantial fee increase applies to all passport applications processed at the consulate in Johannesburg. BGS Migration and Legal Services director Shelton Chiyangwa has expressed concern that this increase will likely lead to a rise in the number of illegal immigrants in South Africa.

The value of income earned in SA dwarfs the passport renewal fee. Sometimes we need to be logical. Increased costs impact those in Zim more. It happens the World over, Ireland just changed requirements to SA, the UK asks a fortune and soon Europe will charge Brits too due to the ongoing Brexit nonsense. It's life.

@@BatsiraiMusuka The whole point is to mitigate and monitor those that have qualification and are working to be able to pay which intern will stop cheap labour practices.
@@Questioning4u once you document everyone and allow them to get jobs and give them equal rights to earn as much as their South African counterparts, the migrants will join their South African counterparts in demanding better wages (it even becomes more attractive to employ South Africans first as they speak local language and wages are now equal).
But as long as you support making documentation impossible, the undocumented remain without right to even ask for better wages or working conditions. In fact, they become grateful for any means of survival that the illicit employers throw their way. They literally have no rights and cannot protest any unfair labor practices.
Anyone still running away from documentation after government has made it easy to obtain them is quite obviously upto illegal activities and this becomes easier to identify (because everyone else is now documented).
It seems to me that people are keen to get documented.
