    Details from Tresspasser Books:
"Mark Mahaney’s Polar Night is a passage through a rapidly changing landscape in Alaska’s northernmost town of Utqiagvik. It’s an exploration of prolonged darkness, told through the strange beauty of a snowscape cast in a two month shadow. The unnatural lights that flare in the sun’s absence and the shapes that emerge from the landscape are unexpectedly beautiful in their softness and harshness. It’s hard to see past the heavy gaze of climate change in an arctic town, though Polar Night is a visual poem about endurance, isolation, and survival."
    Edition of 1500. 10.5 x 13.5. 52 pages. 10 b&w and 16 color plates. Singer-sewn binding with foil stamped cover.

Amazing, Mark’s work is crazy. Love your videos and the way you break down photo books. My collection is really modest but really keen to start writing down my thoughts on them. Great inspiration watching the way you go through them.

Thanks for watching! It's hard for me to buy new books. I typically have to wait for special occasions and holidays (teacher life). But definitely start writing. There are so many wonderful photobooks to share and expound upon. Good luck!

Hi, I love what you have going. It's really calming watching these videos. I like that you are not trying to give a lecture about the books and their meanings. I hope you keep doing these.

I'm trying to keep the ball rolling. It is hard to find time to film and edit with work, kids, etc... But hoping to stay consistent!

I was listening to an interview of Mark Mahaney(which is available on RUclips) and in that he mentioned that he was there with his assistant who was helping him with lighting gear. So has made use of artificial lighting which is no surprise because he does a lot of commissioned portraiture work. He also said that wrestler is trying to combat those conditions so your observation is right. Do you think that there is some pattern to B&W photographs or those are just there?
Ending was weak in comparison to other parts. I feel like the problem with most contemporary books like this is that there aren't enough photographs, they always feel inadequate and incomplete which makes just good but not "great". I really appreciate how to didn't shy away from expressing your dislikes. Thank you for making these vids.

I'll have to check that out. If there is a pattern to the b&w, it isn't apparent to me. But I tend to dislike the mixture, unless it is archival work with contemporary work. Ending a book is such a huge challenge. Those last few notes are incredibly important. But for me, I want to try to understand the author's intentions moreso than my preference. Thanks for watching!

@@AaronHardinPhoto "I want to try to understand the author's intentions moreso than my preference"
Thanks for the reminder. This needs to be said more often. I was reading Nabokov's essay "Good Readers and Good Writers" and he wrote something like read neither with brain nor with heart but with spine.

Wow, that is a fascinating idea. I'm definitely going to have to stew on that one! I do think that there is a measure of humility and openness I have to lean into for every photobook I read. I find that I can be my greatest enemy in discovering the beauty or wonder in a book.
