    All you have to do is look at Moto Guzzi's offered for sale. Only Harley, BMW, and Moto Guzzi seem to have the combination of reliability and build quality that makes each a bike that could last a lifetime. That really hold their value over the decades for that reason. True there are others like Ducati but I'm thinking big touring bikes.

    • @gregorytimmons4777
      @gregorytimmons4777 5 лет назад +1

      @@scottmerrow1488 650cc maximum engine size was never enough to kill off Moto Guzzi. Not when you look at Guzzi's engineering. The trans. that plugs into the engine like a car, the simplicity of air cooling. The handling which is great throughout the entire product range. The value in a bike with a nice tube frame as opposed to stamped sheet metal welded together. Moto Guzzi is built to last unlike throw away Honda models. Try getting a dealer to work on your old Honda. Or even get parts for bikes they built 25 years ago. The salesmen will only look at you like you are strange for not letting them sell you a new one. Most important is a certain intangible that gets people hooked on Guzzi's. Which even those people struggle to put into words. No, Sorry but there is just something about a motorcycle with heritage and soul that Honda just didn't have with the CX.

  • @Jodyrides
    @Jodyrides 4 года назад

    I have had 4 Guzzi’s..1 cx500..The CX 500 was originally designed by Handel to eventually be a turbo charged engine. It is a better design than the Guzzi..I know Guzzi has perfect primary and secondary balance. but Honda perfected the V twin by spinning the clutch in the opposite direction from the crankshaft to offset the torque reactions. They twisted the cylinders 23° to bring the intake manifolds closer together, this brought the carburetors close together to get them out of the riders way, and to allow them to be operated by a single cable on a bellcrank . this single cable system allows the carburetors to stay synchronized. Honda engine has multi valve heads. Central location on the spark plug for a better combustion, reducing the chance of premonition or detonation. behind it uses very light pushrods to activate the valves, and still has a very high red line. Using pushrods reduces the height of the heads.The Honda engine has water cooling. water cooling is 4000 times more efficient than air cooling..
    refinement and reliability concerns, you have to be able to tinker with your own bike when you are in a Guzzi..They aren’t perfect. Oil pressure sensors Or one of the little nagging glitches. I put one on two of my bikes, and I have put 2 on my current Norge.. seeing that oil light come on while you’re doing 80 miles an hour is heart stopping.Start relays or another weak point on the Italian bikes. I put two of them on my V 11 sport, and 1 on my Norge.Just little nagging annoying electrical component failures. But the basic motorcycles I have never had trouble with.
    The CX 500 on the other hand is not problem free either. Water pump seals are a common failure and it is a pain to access. The early CX 500s had I believe, CDI ignition. these early ignition systems made the machine difficult to start. It would be cranking the bike, and it would not fire into you let go of the starter button. It seems that the starter was robbing the electrical system/ignition system of a Knouff voltage to fire. But when you let go of the starter button, the starter draw disappears and the ignition system gets full voltage for a second . if the engine is still rotating when you let go of the starter button, the ignition will start the engine.The later CX 650 technicians were transistor ignitions and they started the engines much quicker.
    I like the Honda engine better. I wish they would bring it back in a machine like the Honda pacific coast with updated suspension, fuel injection, And leave the disc brake off of the back wheel. Who needs a heavy 200 hp rear disc brake /gyro/ flywheel / unsprung mass on a motorcycle rear wheel..

    In 1974 I acquired a Moto Guzzi 850T which I was to keep for the next twenty years. That machine was my THIRD shaft-driven machine at that stage. I never owned a CX500, although I had one as a loaner while the R100RS and M72 outfit I owned some eleven years ago was in the shop. I did have a Honda VT500E from 1984 to 1997 and, in my opinion, this was a lighter less over-engineered motorcycle than the CX.
    Currently, I have a V9 Bobber (second bike) as my eighth shaft-driven motorcycle - and this one is slowly being upgraded with a series of mods as finances permit. The next upgrades include adding a centre stand, and having the OEM Moto Guzzi Rearset Kit - 2B0042735 fitted. Guzzi has shown how to meet Euro 4 standards with a modern V-Twin pushrod air-cooled engine! In some ways I prefer the standard engine sound of my V9 Bobber to the 850T but, in that, I'm relying on memory. So comparing V9 to 850T, I'm 13HP shorter down on power, have half the fuel tank capacity, but I'm also less about 50 kg in mass, have fuel injection and a shorter more-nimble ride.

    I own a modified guzzi 850 le mans II, a modified CX500 and my beginner bike a 1973 CB250 (so I wouldn't consider myself anti-honda) but the guzzi is clearly much more enjoyable, nicer to ride and about the looks we don't even need to talk (though the all original cb250 looks pretty nice too). In my opinion (also as an absolute amateur considering mechanics) the guzzi wins in any case, also due to it's simplicity (and in the end still has over 30HP more) - except for the price. The CX is really fun to try out things as there is quite a huge aftermarket and things are really cheap. So a really cool bike to learn modding on. On contrary the guzzi is really expensive and there's just a very specialized aftermarket with pretty expensive (but beautiful tho) parts. If i needed to sell one of the 3 it would be the CX.

    How can you compare a big Guzzi with a plastic maggot, having ridden cx’s for a living,amongst others and a Spada about the only similarities are both are shaft driven v twin four strokes. The Spada lived in the underground car park for the50 mile commute into London and only used, workwise, for long motorway jobs and the journey home. Now if you had compared the V50 with the CX that would have been different, and yes I had a V50 for a year until it was stolen, it would have given different opinions. I loved the Spada with its lazy engine and several times sat at 90 plus smoking in comfort behind the lovely fairing. Not the fasted bike but great to ride for long distances. No numb bum or aching wrists after a long journey.

    One has to smile at the fashion of having a large hole under the seat where the battery should be, with the battery relocated to being under the swing arm where it will get covered in road crud, fail prematurely and be an absolute pain to access and service. Additionally the under seat area should be used for storage of gloves, tools and oily rags. It's all a rum do I tell you.

    I like Guzzi's but lets be real. MOTO GUZZI only survived because Honda decided that it's niche market wasn't worth appropriating. Maybe Honda had sentimental reasons as well.

      I really doubt Guzzi only survives because Honda gave up on a configuration they never took past 650cc.

      Scrubbed tires and scraped footpegs does not mean bike handles . Rode CX's in early eighty's could scrape pegs and scrub tires but not best handling even then it felt like had hinge in middle . Was ok then as not really much torque or power from engine to upset it . Not in same league as some thing like 80's guzzi

      Been on the CX650 was not really impressed not really much better than 500 pretty gutless still never been on turbo though .Test rode le mans found it lot better but the CX was built cheaply really , lot of frame was cheap pressed steel .Yes engine was pretty damm reliable apart from early cam chain tensioner but had no low end grunt really for a 500 twin . They were built as cheap dispatch riders bike really and not really a fun bike to ride and looked pig ugly in original form .They were safe and predictable handling but certainly not good handling even by 80's standards .Guzzis then were fun and good handling imo looked good but let down by dodgy electrics finish and required more maintenance than Honda

    Cant really compare guzzi to plastic maggot lol . Yes CX was good bike did have its fair share of mechanical problems though .There are some nice cx customs but only really trying to imitate guzzi on the cheap

    Is there really a contest? Looks wise they kinda look the same, sounds wise there's no contest, LE Guzzi all the wat baby. Top end though I think the Hondas have it, but torque is pants, so so sluggish...my 2 cents anyway. ;)

    You mean no caparison . Well I guess it's just me but this like comparing a D K W k 800 to a honda lead wing . The honda got no soul and very little class. Guzzi is the clear winner far and away a better machine.

      Cassandra compared with some of the bikes in the video, it is. Guzzi engine has evolved through the years, the Honda was discontinued long ago. About reliability, the mechanical part of the guzzi isn't bad, but they still have some electrical issues. And I do love guzzis!

      Yeah Guzzi is older... but CX/GL is a solid, dependable engine. I have one with 65k miles and counting.

      It is true that there are some newer Moto guzzi's in the video the (V7) and a (leman sport) but there is also a leman 850 which is the same year or not older than honda's cx 500

    I laugh at all these so called cafe racers people are building out of old despatch rider bikes, because that's all the CX was good for, an over weight top heavy ugly slug.
    Know as the plastic maggot in the UK early ones were notoriously unreliable with camshaft and cam chain issues.

    • @locomojo0485
      @locomojo0485 7 лет назад +4

      Ummm... NO... The CX/GL were quite reliable bikes. And were modern 4 valve per cylinder and watercooled, and made 50Hp from 500cc. That's on par with everything 2017 makes. Unreliable? Why because you are supposed to change a cam chain every 50k miles? Big deal. I have a naked 1981 GL500 that I bought for $400, done normal maintenance stuff on and have gone over 20k miles on it. It now has 65k miles. Just needs oil, brakes, tires, fork seals, and a couple cables. I just took it on a 600 mile round trip ride a week ago. Most dependable bike I've ever had. Much better than this newer Yamaha sport bike I have. POS needs something done to it every other month and only at 27k miles now. So I'm fixing it one last time and posting it for sale.

      The 1978 CX's where recalled to have the cam chain tensioner replaced as they would fail.
      I also prefer the older bikes as they can be worked on without a high tech workshop and a computer system.
