    Thank you for making this video. This has been so validating. I consistently fell asleep upright right my baby at night (which is so dangerous) and my husband suggested lying down to nurse. We happened to discover this incredible secret of sleeping through the night with the added benefit of closeness with my baby. I haven't told a single soul we do this though because i feel like we would be judged. But our bodies were CLEARLY made to nurse this way at night. It's so natural and comfortable. I was sleeping in the way that co sleepers recommend is safest without ever looking up a single thing, because it just came naturally. This is a wonderful thing. Thank you for sharing this information.

    You’ve made me feel so much better. My daughter is 6 weeks old and she sleeps the best in bed with me. I’ve been side feeding and i wake up when she’s searching and help her find it. I’ve felt so guilty about having her in bed at all. I have only been doing it when I’m too exhausted to feel comfortable sitting up to feed her. I watched your fourth trimester video as well and it’s truly what i needed to hear

      Oh I'm so glad. I had the same issue with my first. I felt SO guilty co-sleeping - no one I knew co-slept and my mother-in-law told me it wasn't okay. I started reading up on other cultures, met another lady who co-slept, and I realized that we were pretty much the only culture that didn't make it a common practice. After first hand experiencing the benefits that it had for both my baby and me, I was sold and never looked back. 5 babies later, each of which slept next to me until they were ready to transition (which they did beautifully and easily in their own time), I can attest to nothing but good things that came of it! None of them fear bedtime, they all have a great relationship with sleep, and I get much needed snuggle time with them all as babies! A win for everyone! My 1 year old tells me it's time for bed, leads me to bed, and falls asleep in minutes while nursing. I leave him to sleep and have time with my husband! No tears, no struggle... amazing. Thanks for your kind comments :)

      Jennifer's Magic Boots I’m glad to see it’s not a bad thing. My mom says it’s so unsafe which i know it could be (like keeping blanket by baby’s face and stuff). I’ve heard a lot that other cultures do it and that it’s being studied more in the us but it’s still such an judged thing. I hope with time it stops being like that

    It’s 2am on my first night home with my first baby (called Niko!) and we tried putting him in his crib but he screamed bloody murder and seemed genuinely distraught when he’s otherwise been really placid and cheerful. So we ended up co-sleeping for the last couple of hours, and now he’s feeding while I watch this. 🖤

    My own sleep is severely disturbed if my husband is not in bed even one single night, and likewise for him. If we roll over too far from each other and I can't feel his body next to mine I half-wake up and find it in my sleep. I cannot even begin to imagine how much more significant it is for a newborn. Even when I had a small kitten, she would attach her little fluff body to mine 24/7 in the beginning seeking the warmth and cuddles even without the food (actually she continued sleeping somewhere in my bed for the rest of her life). How is this need for physical connection not obvious and literally the most natural thing?!? And yet my friends and family think I'm anything between delusional to downright criminal when it comes to discussing cosleeping.

    Thank you for sharing! I’ve been bed sharing with my first baby since we brought him home from the hospital. He sleeps so much better & therefore so do I *mostly*. It feels so intuitive & natural for us. Now selfishly I’ve grown to love the extra closeness. It does make breastfeeding so much easier at night too! I do understand why it wouldn’t work for some people or be in the best interest of the baby in some circumstances but it works so well for us & we are so careful.

    I've done exactly that with all 6 of my children. I also bend my leg under me so I have extra stability from rolling forward. It's worked for me and still does. I've just had my 6th baby 12 days ago and he only sleeps best with me.

    My baby is 5 days old and I did not plan to co sleep, I spent my entire pregnancy planning to sleep him beside me in a Moses basket
    I had absolutely no idea I would feel so adversed to putting him in it until he got home from the hospital
    It’s hard and cold and he is wide awake as soon as he’s put in it
    Consleeping feels so natural and he doesn’t cry all night, he stirs, we breastfeed and then we cuddle a little and then continue sleep

    I just need to say THANK YOU for this video. I feel so much graritude for recieving this wonderful advice. My sweet baby is 3 mths now. We started sleeping next to eachother 3 weeks after she was born. Seeme she wouldnt settle on her own. I figure she knows what she needs and will be ready soon enough. I read the book Sweet Sleep which confirmed so much for me in terms of safety and why cosleeping works. These past few months have been very peaceful for our family which is a necessity for my husband who works long hours. Again thank you. This is incredible ♡ I co-slept with my daughter the day she came home up until she was around 8 years old. Now fast forward 17 years I have a newborn baby boy. This time around I'm more nervous because he was born at 37 weeks and is only 6lbs, where my daughter was 8lbs 2oz. My son does NOT like sleeping in his bassinet even though its right next to the bed. I tried a moses basket, but nope. He will sleep in it for a little bit but then he wants to be on me. So now I've been putting the firm mattress that came with the basket on the bed that way he's on a firm surface. I do have to wear a nipple shield because my nipples are inverted. So thats the only issue.

    I’m due any day now with my first. I am already dreading the whole lack of sleep situation. I have a bedside bassinet set up that I plan on using but I would much rather have my baby snuggled up next to me since it seems so much easier on everyone. I am a deep sleeper now so I am not sure how alert I will be once my baby is here. My husband seems very anti-cosleep considering how deep I sleep, but we shall see once baby is here. I bet I will have a strong intuition one way or another. ❤ Sleep is so important to me and I know I will be a better mother if I could get as much sleep as possible, and co sleeping seems to be the answer.

    • @Alicet2323

      @@Bri-wc4ib hi! So i didn’t bed share when my son was a newborn. He slept in his bassinet and then crib, both in my room. He started really fighting the crib around 6 months. Occasionally I brought him into my bed with me early in the morning but I didn’t feel safe because he tended to burrow into my husbands pillow. I struggled on and around 9 months out of desperation I started him on a floor bed in his own room. At 14 months now, he’s still doing great on his floor bed. I nurse him to sleep and then roll away when he’s asleep. When he wakes up throughout the night, I nurse him back to sleep and usually just fall back asleep next to him. I wish I did the floor bed earlier! I get to safely sleep next to him but it’s also so easy for me to roll away and let him sleep on his own when I need to.
      If I have another baby I really don’t think I’ll do the bassinet thing again. Those first few months were so hard trying to get my baby to stay asleep in his bassinet. Throughout the day, I dreaded night time and would feel depressed because I didn’t know how I was gonna get some sleep. I will most likely put my mattress on the floor and cosleep. It really is the best.

    This is sooo helpful. In Mexico we practice cosleeping but I was just so nervous since I see a lot of info against it, so we only did it the first two nights and from then on in the crib. My baby is 7 weeks old and I could very well sleep through the night since he doesn't really wake up, just stirs. But I get up to feed him so it cuts my sleep. Since I'll be going back to work soon my husband and I thought we could be alternating nights to feed him when he wakes up ... but we could avoid lack of sleep altogether ... :)

    I’m curious to know about diaper changing for newborn/young baby. If you don’t get up to feed, and baby doesn’t wake up much at night, how often do you change newborn/young baby at nighttime?
    And I think it’s worth to mention that if you’re breastfeeding, it also saves you time not (necessarily) having to burp baby at night... so more sleep!
    Thank you for your inspiring video.
    I co-slept with my baby when he was already 4 or 5 months old, and it truly saved us. I was a new person - not only more rested but happy not to be apart from him at night, which was something that always felt unnatural to me. I wish I had done it from the beginning. :)

My newborn currently sleeps in his bassinet that is attached to my bed & in the early morning when he is hungry, I will then bring him into bed with me and it’s the sweetest thing ever❤️ he is still getting the hang of it & I have noticed he does much better with it when we have our tummies touching one another, so thank you for bringing up the newborn tips! I do have a question. Whenever you had a baby co-sleeping with you, when did you start to put them in their own room? I would assume that each time you had a new baby, you needed to transition another child out of your bed or else when you had a newborn, the newborn would disrupt their sleep?

    Hi, thank you for your videos, I find that you are so calm and comforting to listen to that it helps me just to watch one of your videos when I’m feeling stressed. I just had my second baby and did some cosleeping with my first and I am really enjoying it now with my baby. I have a few questions though: I found that I would nurse my first to go to sleep at night or for a nap in the day and it would put me to sleep too so I would end up having the same bed time as my baby much of the time when I would have preferred to have that evening time with my husband. What does putting your baby to bed at night or for a nap in the day generally look like for you? Also, I am wondering if cosleeping and nursing my baby to go to sleep will make it so they don’t learn how to soothe themself and fall asleep on their own and they become dependent on me to sleep. What have you found in your experience? And for you, what has the transition to their own bed looked like? Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your time! ❤️

    Hi, thank you for your lovely video. My son turns 4 weeks today and I've started to co sleep to manage sleep deprivation for me and my husband better as when trying to get him to sleep in the moses basket next to the bed just doesnt work, he only settles for an hour or so at a time before needing to be held again. Your info is really great, I wanted to know though, do you wind your babies when they feed in the night on the side? I've been told breastfed babies dont need as much winding as bottle fed but you dont mention it . Do you just let them fall asleep at the best and not wind/burp them? Thank you in advance x

    Thanks so much for another fantastic video! My little girl is 10 weeks old and we have Co-slept with her from birth. She is quite a spewy baby so I find lying down to nurse a challenge. I find I have to keep her upright for 15 minutes after a feed otherwise she is spitting up and waking herself up - any advise you could offer? Lying down and nursing during the night sounds like a dream. Thanks again :)

      Thanks for your kind words! I'm not sure what to tell you other than you baby might have a minor food sensitivity to something you are eating that is making her spewy. The only time I had that problem was when one of my babies had an issue with soy. Once I cut it out, it took about 2 weeks and then no more problems at all! The usual culprits are diary, soy, and gluten. Worth a try to see if maybe it helps keep her from spitting up!

    Great video, and very informative ! :) But there are two important things that you didnt talk about. Maybe you were lucky with all your five children, but my child needs to be burped three to four times throughout each feeding. If not put in an upright position for a few minutes to be burped she would throw up most of the milk in her stomach. So how can I burp my baby while lying down as you show in the video? Second question is: I saw you are not covered with a blanket while lying down with your baby. But I feel cold if I sleep uncovered... How can I solve this proplem. Thank you so much in advance!

    • @WillowWisteria
      @WillowWisteria  4 года назад +3

      Hello! None of my babies (all breastfed) needed to be burped. If the baby has a good latch and doesn’t take in air while nursing, then they shouldn’t need to be burped... though of course, all babies are different. If the baby has a food sensitivity to something in the breastmilk, if mama has an overactive letdown, or if the baby is only really getting fore-milk, then they could be more gassy in general....Otherwise, if those are not issues for you, then there’s really no need to burp. My babies would sometimes overeat and spit up but it wasn’t super common and generally not caused by intaking air when nursing. As for the feeling cold, you can wear a shirt, light sweater or zip down hoodie that allows for easy access to your breasts. I have soft cotton, long sleeve, v-neck shirts that I wear on cold nights. Hope this helps!

She didn't wake to feed either but she did a ton of cluster feeding before we went to sleep. Have to say I was on edge a little and I think it'll take time to get a comfy position I'm happy with, plus my right shoulder got really cold 🥶 oh I wanted to ask, did you sit up to wind your babies and I'm guessing no nappy changes throughout unless they poop? Yes, this gives me ideas of where our sleeping will progress to. Before I had my son I thought I would never want to co-sleep for fear of it being unsafe. But from the day he was born "5days ago" we have been struggled up. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I do have a more personal question about circumcision. What are your opinions of it. At first I was against it because I know there are no true medical reasons for it but my family is really pro-cir. And the more I research the more I go back and forth. Just looking for an outside opinion. Thanks for the videos. Much love and peace to you and your family.

    • @WillowWisteria
      @WillowWisteria  7 лет назад +7

      I'm so glad that you reconsidered co-sleeping! It's so wonderful, isn't it! So maybe I'll do a video on circumcision :) I have 4 boys - 3 are circumcised and 1 is not, and here's why. My first 3 boys were from my first marriage, and despite my incredibly strong feelings against it, my now ex-husband was adamant that they get circumcised. I cried and cried. I still, to this day, feel horrible about doing that to them. Horrible. My new husband listened to my feelings about it and agreed not to do it with my 4th son :) We're both so happy with our decision. Here's my strong opinion: I think it's useless cosmetic genital mutilation. Harsh and strong, I know. I see no reason to put little baby boys through such a traumatic event for something that serves no purpose other than serving societal norms. Sending my boys off as newborns to get a piece of their body cut off was heartwrenching for me. I will regret it always. I feel boys can get it done later in life if it's important to them, however, I've know quite a few men who are uncirced and are proud of it! It's a hard decision to make and I empathize wholeheartedly with your situation, Carlon - I remember being there with my first 3 boys. Congrats on your new little one! I hope you both are doing well and enjoying getting to know each other! Sending love to you and your family as well.

    Thank you so much for this! I’m 9 months pregnant with my second and really want to bed share with the new baby. I didn’t with my first who I exclusively breastfed until 16 months and totally regret it.
    Question: do you swaddle the newborn while you bed share? My instinct says no, to put her in a sleepsack with arms free but I’m also aware of the Moro reflex. Then again, maybe it’s not as severe because baby is so close to mama?

    • @WillowWisteria

      Hi there! I do swaddle my little ones while bed sharing. I stop when they start trying to roll over on their own. @@WillowWisteria thank you so much for the fast response! 🥰 super helpful! So a newborn doesn’t need her arms free in case, I don’t know, my breast is in her face (I’m busty) and she maybe uses her hand instinctively and it wakes me up? • @WillowWisteria

      Of course, my friend! I swaddle my newborns & when they begin to stir, I move them to my breast (using the blanket under them). Of course being mindful that they can breathe… it takes a little practice getting comfortable with safe positioning but I promise it will instinctually come. Then when they’re done nursing then they just sleep swaddled & comfortable next to me. My best advice is to feel it out once your baby is here. You’ll be able to see what feels best for you both. You can start by swaddling (or not) & see how that works. I’ve never had a problem, or felt like it could be a danger, with swaddling them for the first few months while co-sleeping but always follow your mama instincts & see what works best for you & your new little babe ❤️

    • @WillowWisteria
      @WillowWisteria  6 лет назад +5

      I apologize for the delay in responding! While every baby is, of course, different... from my experience, most breastfed babies do not need to be burped as they take in little to no air while nursing (if their latch is correct!). I have never needed to burp my nursed babies. Yet another benefit of breastfeeding! If your baby is prone to more gas (suck in air when he or she nurses), then you may have an overactive letdown or something like that, which, by the way, nursing laying down will help remedy! All in all, you really shouldn't need to burp them after nursing them to sleep. Hope this helps, friend!
