Exercise your power equipment before you need them it chainsaw, generator, non electric heaters, gas grill, etc. I try to do a routine check of the generator and chainsaw monthly by starting them and letting them run for at least 20 minutes. My big buddy heater gets a start up at least once a year. I use my gas grill a good bit so I don’t really worry about it. Anything that is not used routinely needs an operation routine. You are not only checking these devices will start but also helping them be more trouble free just by using them routinely. I have learned this the hard way over the years when I took the “set and forget” method. Don’t get caught off guard like I did many times in emergencies past. Great video! Thanks for making it.

You should fill your bathtub with snow, (the clean stuff obviously ) and you can use that as it melts to fill the cistern of the toilet for flushing. Saving your clean water for drinking. You can also boil snow for dishes too. That's what we were told to do when snow knocked out the Electric and Phone lines here, it was 2 months before some people got it back. 2 MONTHS! This was a great video guys!

Great tips!!! Tried and true, I had to do this here in Eastern Missouri this past winter. My kids loved helping gather snow, we stored it all in the tub. Used it for our dogs drinking water, dishes, flushing, and for boiling water for bathing. Saved a lot of water bottle usage.

My dad used to make us keep a sleeping bag or two, water, a flashlight, road flares, accident kit, matches (or firestarter kit), first aid kit, granola bars & beef jerkey, cloth diapers with pins, and a few towels in the trunk of our big old LTD and told us that if we ever went off the road or were stuck in a snow storm, that it was our "backup" plan.
You should do a video on staying safe and warm during that kind of situation. As a firefighter, your son Jonathon might have good info from his training on that. Just a suggestion.
    Great video by the way!

People say “you’re crazy” to me when they find out I have food stored. Then they say “ oh I’ll just come to your house if something happens”. That one really chaps my rear end. I’m always like “uh no. This is for us” but I’ll help guid you to build up your supply”. Most say no.
I try to be charitable but it has to come to a point. My kids can’t go hungry because other chose to be irresponsible.

You all be careful! I live 10 miles out of town in SE Colorado. In the mid 90"s we had a blizzard and it was a doozy. After a few days I thought of a gal who lived in a tiny travel trailor a mile east of me. Luckily I had her cell number. She had one day of food left for she and her dog and no heat. I don't know why she didn't call the Sheriff so I did and they were out there in the middle of the night with snow plows etc and got her out and into town with her dog. You just never know who needs help. We heated with wood so we were good. We had 15 foot snow drifts on the road and the county hadn't been able to get out this way yet.

Natural gas or propane reserve is good but unuseable in a power outage if you have an electric start. Homeowners insurance will drop people that reroute the electric to alternative source. Learned that life lesson. A wood burning furnace or fireplace/rocket stove is still the most independent option. Great video!

Since you have the propane you could get a propane generator...or even a dual/multi fuel one...as a backup for your power needs.
There are also heat-powered (Peltier) chargers for your USB devices since you would be burning wood/propane for heat anyway.
Also...you might want to get a Simple Pump installed on your water well...it is a hand-powered pump which you could use in a power outage.
I have a system of 3 lighting items in every room: 1. Battery powered light 2. Oil Lamp 3. Candle (and a lighter by each of the lamps/candles)

We live in the city and didn't dare hit the road. Many in Houston just had to get on the freeways and it ended in a lot of wrecks and deaths. Our chicken and rabbit waterers froze. This never happened before. We usually don't get below 32. But, we do have a generator and plenty of gas in reserve.

I don't have a well and septic anymore, but if I had animals, the first extra I would spend my money on would be solar/wind power backup of both the welk oumps and the septic pump. That way the animals would always have water and another preper problem of sanitation and water is handled for all the humans. I would also have my septic pumped once every 3 years which guarantees it is kept in tip top shape.

Someone gave me a portable phone charger for Christmas a few years ago. Before a storm, I plug it in and charge it. Once the storm comes, I can charge my phone (or anything that will attach to a usb port). Since then, I have even seen solar charging phone chargers. I think this is an essential. A house should at least have one cellular device in case of emergency.
