In our unarmoured duels, Philipp Lechner in the role of the unarmoured fencing master only won one out of five duels, and only because I lost my dagger at the start of the fight and couldn't get the full potential out of my armour. Producing this piece of content together with Dequitem probably one of the craziest things I've done in my entire life haha
The amount of work and effort that goes into one of these videos behind the scenes is really out of this world..
Just for this video we had to get up at 5AM in the Morning to have the location set at the right time.. and then almost 5 Hours of really intense video shooting.
None of this was choreographed and everything improvised with no arrangements beforehand.. maybe with the exception that I had to survive the day haha!
If anyone deserves the glory It's you Dequitem.. you really live this shit.. from forging your own armour.. knowing the sources in and out.. and then also being an incredibly skilled martial artist!
Thanks for having me - Philipp!
Thanks for these kind words. It was a great experience to fence with you and also it was awesome how crazy and brave you are. It was risky to shoot these non-choreographed but the outcome is pure joy!
Even knowing you both know what you're doing, squaring in front of a medieval Terminator in just a shirt takes balls of steel. Kudos to you both. And great location!
@@doppelsoldner brilliant, visually very pleasing, and refreshingly realistic
Thanks for fighting non choreographed without armour!
Ever since I was a child I was curious about this topic, I assume the same goes for most people that watch.
So I appreciate that you have the talent, trained the skills and had the bravery to do this so we could see.
I always resonated with the badass vibes of this stuff, so you sir, are a badass!
And thanks Dequitem, for all that is said above, and additionally I think the thing Phillip would be most grateful for, not killing him! great video, beautiful aesthetics too.
Nice example since you both know what you're doing.
that looks dangerous as hell. thanks for toughing it out

Sounds like something the Hound or Jaime Lannister would say. I’m not even gonna look it up either.

You are helping to maintain the patchwork quilt of human history. Please carry it on.
Its all about that force multiplication. The armor just adds so much More to it and honestly when watching this video was thinking to my self they had to be REALLY careful filming this because i mean with plate armor on you can bash someone really good and its going to make someone have a really bad day let alone the weapon in your hands. as always great work and things for this little additional information to the film
@@dequitem yeah but the thing is the fencing Master doesn't have to fight the knight because the knight isn't fast enough to keep up with them all he has to do is walk away

not necessarily... the unarmored man still has one trick up his sleeve at that point

@@seranonable Better part of valor.
What? No. He can just leg it. Zero chance the armoured knight catches him on foot unless he can't run for some reason.
@@BADALEX1That still leaves about a second or two during which his back is facing the knight and he is in range of the knight’s polearm. That’s enough time to kill him
Well, that’s the thing about full plate: it just works.
No question about it!

Hi jebediah
@@dequitem does lord of the rings pain your very soul too?
Imagine Todd Howard bombarding a fencer while wearing full plate as he goes, "It just works!"
Just by disarming the man's fencer and the scene were cut enough to know that he is completely fucked without any alternative situation. Pretty legit there
🤗
I think that would be the point that you would honourably, boldly and sensibly... run away as fast as you could!
@@dequitem in that situation would running be the best option? does that armour limits the wearer running capabilities?
@@jeremypasaribu1520, I have no study in the subject but just from life experience (fat is armor of a sort) and intuition: the armor is extra weight, limits range of motion, and causes retention of heat.
@@jeremypasaribu1520 Sure, to some extent it limits top speed and agility but ultimately the number one thing it'll limit is endurance. Unsurprisingly, all that armor weighs quite a fair bit. Who do you think will tire out first and who will be able to keep running for longer?

It wasn't safe!
By now its safe to say that those "melees" are safe in that one single slip up can cause majour injuries, especially whilst wielding poleaxes or Halberds. This is the medieval equivalent of showing up to a street fight with a gun- changes the game completely
This is exactly what I want to see. I bought my first training longsword a couple days ago, and instead of watching choreographed movies with not much realism, I much prefer these real fights to watch. And you have the most beautiful choices in film locations I must say. The video filmed in the field of flowers was top notch.
But stay save and always use safety protection. In our normal training we are always fully armored and use only the highest quality hema gear. Don't be lazy with your longsword and don't injure someone or yourself.
@@dequitem yes, of course. I bought a plastic one so its pretty safe.
What country do you film in by the way?

The location is awesome, look at the steps carved on the right side of the cave. I've seen similar caves once inhabited by hermits or used as refuge during invasions.
The SAND!!! Dirt trick but looked awesome, very cool juxtaposition or armored vs unarmored combat man, really loved this one
Thanks mate!
You've mentioned that you lost 1 out of 5 duels, do you think you wouldn't have lost any one of them had it been a real battle scenario, considering that you have to hold back to not seriously harm him and he doesn't - since you are armored, at least until the grappling part.
If holding back was always part of it to not seriously injure his training partner, then yeah, he would have won them all and likely would have completely one-sided. Unarmored would have to get a good shot in between the plates in order to make it out.
I think I would win all of them. He is really good. But no one is that crazy good. Even Martin Fabian wouldn't have a chance. Yes mayby in a duel to the first blood were a small cut in the gabs of armor can work but not in a duel to the death with me in my tournament armor. Noone unarmored has a good chance if I am not lazy!

this video was awesome, , lets people explore into the possibility of such duels and how they would turn out.. it does a good job at being entertaining and looking like a movie. i didn't expect "the truth" twist in the end.. of course you were trying to keep your opponent alive in the first duel.. in a real fight, you would trade hits and he would be the dead one
Yes. But I also choose this duel ending because it shows how easy I can kill him or take the weapon away. So it was the truth on multiple levels.

Thank you, Masters, for the exiting combat and for the added informative explanation. Very much appreciated and admired, for the bravery and skill.
I don't know why but for some reason almost every duel video from you carries a sense of horror. It might be the realistic immersion and storytelling? The sense of mortality? Either way, thank you for the quality and the inspiration you provide.
The lack of music, just a lonely wind, add to the dread.

Ricochets off armor.
Fantastic work. Such a difficult fight to stage given that every swing of the polearm has to be controlled heavily to not kill your colleague. There's no way this choreography can look as slick as your others given the context, but you really pushed it to the maximum believability. Kudos.
It wasn't choreographed, but I pulled my strikes and thrusts.
Philipp Lechner is a very brave man. Fighting without any protection seems reckless.
There was some hidden protection under the cloth but hands and head wasn't safe 😅
Man, kudos to the unarmoured guy - I've done re-enacting, and even when filming rehearsed moves, using steel weapons, and rolling around with a guy in full plate, is just so dangerous! Stuff can go bad so quickly. Well done!
You usually don't script the outcome, so seeing the fencing master made me nervous, but then I could immediately tell, there was some restraint in your blows. 😅 Well done!!!
I would have finish him in seconds without restricts. He is a great fencer but armor is a giant advantage!

Excellent portayal of both scenarios. I can see an armored footknight being overwhelmed by speed and tenacity. But not often.
Nah the truth would probably be that if the fencer trulely was a master and understood medieval sword fighting and armored combat he would probably just run away
😅😅😅 Yessss
I've often wondered (and read up on) what real-life fighting in heavy armour might be like. Thank you so much for your clips. I wonder, though, what the 15-17th century plate-mail wearing combatant might have been like in terms of CARDIOVASCULAR fitness.

I was expecting a bout with light HEMA gear, but wow, the control you guys have is impeccable
But still dangerous! To dangerous!!!
And this is why I hate movies and video games that show guys/gals in leather or cloth wiping out entire regiments of fully armored warriors. It breaks my immersion. From the Elder Scrolls Online cinematics to the WarCraft series. Grinds my gears. The guy in full armor losing to the unarmored is an extreme rarity. There would have to be a large number of extenuating circumstances or extreme luck/skill involved to bridge that gap.
Thank you for this.
Not to be an ass but its a bit silly that such minor unimportant details bother you or unimmerse you because they are unrealistic but the wizards magic and fantasy creatures that all exist and function in completely unrealistic or unexplainable ways dont ? i guess probably because of familiarity to the subject, either way a bit silly
