Katie isn't deaf but she's hard on hearing, she's got Meniere's disease. I also knew the first time I saw Natalie, Melody, Emmett and Travis in the show that they were legit deaf, it's so hard to fake facial expressions to match the expressiveness of actual deaf people, aside from the plain differences in signing.
The speed of sign does not tell you if someone is really deaf or not. We have ASL *accents* like hearing people have accents based on their state/upbringing. People from the south typically sign slower than those from the north like NY or DC. Some signs are different dependant upon the state as well. My sign for birthday in Alabama is very different from the sign for birthday up north. Etc.
I am hard of hearing myself, wearing both hearing aids and know some sign language. When seeing this show for the first time couple years ago, I was so amazed that they made this show, 'Switched At Birth'. I love this show a lot, because it shows that world that deaf world is NO DIFFERENT than the hearing world. We are all the same and we are human being. One thing is different is we speak different language that all! Some hearing people are stubborn to see that and they make fun of us and laugh
I'll add closed captioning for this video tomorrow. ;) And post it to my SwitchedatBirthCC channel where I have captioned quite a few of these interviews for deaf & hard of hearing fans. Check out what I already have there, if you'd like.
I know what you mean. I really thought that accent was real at first, it was that convincing! But...Katie has meniere's disease (like Noah does on the show). She IS fluent in ASL...and she does have trouble hearing sometimes. This condition she has may cause her to deaf completely over time, though
Is it true that some sort of device has to be put in her mouth to help naintain tongue control also? A lot of users on here have mentioned this...but have never said what kind of device this is. I get the impression that it's like a hearing aid...but it goes in your mouth
Katie was fluent in ASL when she was cast. She took classes in school to get to be fluent. She says getting the deaf accent down was a little harder than learning ASL itself. Her sister had to help her map everything, but Katie has done such a wonderful job at speaking deaf that she honestly had me thinking it was real at one point! Apparently, though she does have to have a device put in her mouth to also assist...but all in all, she's amazing at playing Daphne!
watching this show made me start learning sign language, now I can do a lot of sign language!!😂😁😁😘😄
WinnieThePooh 216 OMG SAME
I've picked up a lot too! :-)
I had a feeling the girl playing Natalie was actually deaf. You can normally tell who's actually deaf by how fast they sign.
Katie not deaf

I mean, other than Daphne/Katie Leclerc who else plays a fake deaf person? lol

Switched at Birth showed me the deaf community and now is making my decision to become and interpreter
Right so a show that is about diversity and inclusion. You interview them and don't even put captions on your video for the d/Deaf/HOH people

it must have been hard for Katie to learn sign language
She already was very involved with the deaf community.
She's hard of hearing. She probably could already sign.
